The push from open banking towards the more encompassing approach of open finance is being driven by several elements, from consumer pressure to regulatory obligations to greater awareness around privacy concerns. However, there is by no means a unanimous approach to open banking, and certain players believe that we are at different stages of completion on the open banking roadmap. Over the last decade we have seen that regulatory requirements are increasing, especially in the areas of privacy, payment services, and financial reporting. A more agile, nimble, proactive approach by regulators has been seen against this backdrop, does this equate to innovative supervision, or simply more regulations? However, the Covid-19 pandemic has increased the perceived importance of having 24/7 online access, frictionless mobile payments, and ensuring fully remote access to banking services.
It is clear that policymakers and regulators are well aware of the negative effects of having too much red tape, country-specific interpretations of regulation and different regulatory treatment of seemingly identical financial services. We have also witnessed recent efforts aimed at solving this issue, which build greater clarity across complex financial regulatory frameworks, and address new digital-specific issues as they emerge - the Digital Markets Act is a good example of this. There are corporates who are looking for technology - especially open banking and APIs - to assist with their digital transformation. They are also seeking banking partners that are focused on innovation and can assist with the transformation journey.

A neobank is a kind of digital bank without any branches. Rather than being physically present at a specific location, neobanking is entirely online. Neo Banks are 100% digital in nature. They operate entirely online without any physical branch. Neo Banks offer multiple financial services from money transfer to opening a bank account. Neo Banks partner with the traditional banks and help them acquire the customers in the most seamless manner. Neo Banks globally are famous for faster customer acquisition and consumer appeal vs legacy banks.

The launch of open banking in 2018 promised to forge a new way for financial services. It was a bold statement of intent, and the reality is that it was never going to be possible to get people excited about what was essentially a change in the ‘plumbing’ of the financial services sector. However, three years and one pandemic later, people are really starting to register their interest in the increasing number of digital apps and services that are underpinned by open banking data.
Despite a slow start in the early stages, we saw things move forward significantly during 2020. In fact, the number of people choosing to share their data through open banking has tripled since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result of the pandemic, many people have turned to digital - as accessing branches, or using cash, became increasingly difficult, particularly during lockdown. Lenders are also seeing the benefits with recent Experian research finding that 57% of lenders have adopted open banking technology in the last 12 months, helping people manage their finances in more fluid and intuitive ways online. People are increasingly understanding the ways their financial data can help them manage their finances more productively. The use of these financial digital apps and services offer people new insights that can help them manage their money and access better products that they may not have been able to access before.
