    Hackers adopting aggressive ransomware tactics

#Ransomware groups are using their best of breed tactics to go for newer attacks, as the involvement of law enforcement in these incidents forced many to exit the playing field. A report from ESET says in its threat report, intensifying brute-force attacks, and deceptive phishing campaigns targeting people working from home who have gotten used to performing many administrative tasks remotely. Ransomware, showing three major detection spikes during the second quarter, saw the highest ransom demands to date. The attack collapsed the operations of a colonial pipeline - the largest US pipeline company - and the supply-chain attack leveraging a vulnerability in the Kaseya VSA IT management software, sent shockwaves far beyond the cybersecurity industry. The offender of the Kaseya attack had asked for $70 million - the highest known ransom demand so far. Ransomware gangs may have overdone it this time: the involvement of law enforcement in these high-impact incidents forced several gangs to leave the field. The same can’t be said for TrickBot, which appears to have bounced back from last year’s disruption efforts.

ESET detected 55 million new brute-force attacks (+ 104% compared to T1 2021 ) against public-facing remote desktop protocol services during May and August 2021. ESET telemetry also witnessed an impressive increase in the average number of daily attacks per unique client, which doubled from 1,392 attempts per machine per day in T1 2021 to 2,756 in T2 2021. The Threat Report includes the findings of the highly targeted DevilsTongue spyware, which is used to spy on human rights defenders, dissidents, journalists, activists, and politicians; and a new spear-phishing campaign by the Dukes APT group, which remains a prime threat to Western diplomats, NGOs, and think tanks.

Ransomware and DDoS attacks pose dangerous threats to patients having health issues

Increased digitization in healthcare is a contributor to the industry’s enlarged attack surface. And it is accelerated by a number of factors: the broad adoption of Electronic Health Records Systems (EHRS), integration of IoT technology in medical devices (software-based medical equipment like MRIs, EKGs, infusion pumps), and a migration to cloud services. A hospital room is equipped with an average of 15-20 devices connected to the internet in today's world of healthcare. The proliferation of medical and internet-connected devices in healthcare brings both clinical benefits and security risks. Indeed, the increasing use of medical IoT devices makes healthcare organizations more vulnerable to DDoS attacks; attackers use infected IoT devices in botnets to launch coordinated attacks. Since healthcare IT systems contain sensitive patient data, the sector has long been a target for hackers. Cybercriminals are drawn to healthcare networks because of widespread flaws that offer lucrative opportunities, which is why attacks are on the rise. Ransomware-as-a-service has become the norm in the cybercrime community in the healthcare industry this year.

“Globally, ransomware attacks have been one of the biggest threats to cybersecurity, particularly in the healthcare sector. As per Sophos’ The State of Ransomware in Healthcare 2021 report - 34% of healthcare organizations were hit by ransomware in the last year. Hospitals and health systems are, quite unfortunately, ripe for ransomware and other cyberattacks. Some of the factors most responsible for the rise in healthcare-targeted cyberattacks are due to the nature of the industry itself, like decentralized operations across hospitals and healthcare providers, and exponentially growing volumes of patient health information being captured and stored electronically (i.e. electronic health records) by health systems. Healthcare providers need to invest in technologies like EDR with human-led threat hunting, deploying

218 % increase in ransomware attacks in India in 2021

Ransomware payments hit new records in 2021 as cybercriminals increasingly turned to Dark Web “leak sites” where they pressured victims to pay up by threatening to release sensitive data, according to research released from Unit 42 by Palo Alto Networks. The average ransom demand in cases worked by Unit 42 incident responders rose 144% in 2021 to $2.2 million, while the average payment climbed 78% to $541,010, according to the 2022 Unit 42 Ransomware Threat Report. The most affected industries were Professional and Legal Services, Construction, Wholesale and Retail, Healthcare, and Manufacturing. In 2021, ransomware attacks interfered with everyday activities that people all over the world take for granted – everything from buying groceries, purchasing gasoline for cars to calling emergency numbers in the event of an emergency and obtaining medical care. The Conti ransomware group was responsible for the most activity, accounting for more than 1 in 5 of cases worked by Unit 42 consultants in 2021. REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, was No. 2 at 7.1%, followed by Hello Kitty and Phobos (4.8% each). Conti also posted the names of 511 organizations on its Dark Web leak site, the most of any group.

The report describes how the cyber extortion ecosystem grew in 2021, with the emergence of 35 new ransomware gangs. It documents how criminal enterprises invested windfall profits into creating easy-to-use tools in attacks that increasingly leverage zero-day vulnerabilities. The number of victims whose data was posted on leak sites rose 85% in 2021, to 2,566 organizations, according to Unit 42’s analysis. 60% of leak site victims were in the Americas, followed by 31% for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and then 9% in the Asia-Pacific region. Cyberattacks become more attractive and potentially more disastrous as dependence on information technology increases,” said SonicWall President and CEO Bill Conner. “Securing information in a boundless world is a near impossi

KASEYA RANSOMWARE – IT’S A WAR!

Ransomware should not be treated as a Cybercrime in every case. The context decides what it is actually meant for. The response of the state even if unstated makes it crystal clear, depending on how the state views a ransomware attack or a series of it or something unleashed globally. Launching an attack at the start of the July holiday can have its own connotation, besides the comfort of time that many of the victims would not even come to know of, until getting back to work on Monday. America is at war, another invisible enemy, the heat can be felt all over. It's like the Pandemic, the virus was not to be seen but the devastation put the country out of gear. The difference is that there is no vaccine for ransomware. The recent ransomware attacks have made organizations bleed. The biggest ransom is the complete loss of trust and credibility of business enterprises and the government.

The Kaseya ransomware attack was close on the heels of a discussion just last month with President Putin who had to stop providing safe haven to REvil and other ransomware in the relentless extortionary attack on businesses on US soil. The present ransomware attack also seems to be of REvil type origin. The US deems it as a National Security threat and so is it. The NSA said that the US President had directed the full resources of the government to investigate the incident. Since Friday, the United States Government has been working across inter-agency to assess the Kaseya ransomware incident and assist in the response. The attackers were able to exploit zero-day vulnerabilities in the VSA product to bypass authentication and run arbitrary command execution, it is undoubtedly an extraordinary situation and the President has urged companies to report to the Internet Crime Complaints Center.

#Artificialintelligence is increasingly being used for client AI processing. This means that AI models are being trained and deployed on client devices, such as smartphones, laptops, and IoT devices. This has a number of advantages, including, Reduced latency, Improved privacy and Reduced bandwidth usage.

Traditionally, AI processing has been conducted by massive clusters of servers in the cloud or data centers. This is because AI models can be very large and complex, and they require a lot of computing power to train and run.

Can Google’s tools combat online misinformation

#Google's efforts to combat misinformation are important because misinformation can have a negative impact on society. It can undermine trust in institutions, lead to violence, and harm democracy. By developing new tools and initiatives, Google is helping to make the internet a safer and more informed place for everyone.

Google has recently unveiled three new tools to combat online misinformation:

    · About this Image: This feature, which was initially unveiled earlier in 2023 and is now available globally to English-speaking users through Google Search, provides information about images, including their history, descriptions by users, metadata, and clear indications if an image is generated by AI. Google's AI-generated images are also clearly labelled.

    · Fact Check Explorer: This tool allows journalists to verify images by tapping into information from independent organizations.

    · AI-generated source descriptions within the Search Generative Experience: This feature provides original sources and insights from reputable publications, which are accessible through the "More About This Page" section in search results.
