    പാത്രങ്ങൾ വൃത്തിയാക്കാൻ സ്പോഞ്ച് ഉപയോ​ഗിക്കാത്ത വീടുകൾ ഉണ്ടാകില്ല. ‘വൃത്തിയാക്കുക’ എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെ നാം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഈ സ്‌പോഞ്ചുകൾ ആരോ​ഗ്യത്തിന് തന്നെ വില്ലനായി മാറുന്നു എന്ന കാര്യം ആരും അറിയാതെ പോകുന്നു. ജെർമൻ റിസേർച്ച് സെന്റർ ഫോർ എൻവയോൺമെന്റൽ ഹെൽത്തിലെ ​ഗവേഷകർ നടത്തിയ പഠനത്തിലാണ് ഞെട്ടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കണ്ടെത്തൽ. അടുക്കളയിൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന സ്‌പോഞ്ചുകൾ വീട്ടിലെ ടോയിലറ്റിനെക്കാൾ വൃത്തിഹീനമാണെന്നാണ് പഠനം പറയുന്നത്. സ്‌പോഞ്ച് മൂലമുണ്ടാകുന്ന ആരോഗ്യപ്രശ്‌നങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചും, അവയെ എങ്ങനെ തുരത്താം എന്നതിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചും പഠനം നടത്തുകയായിരുന്നു. പഠനത്തിൽ 14 വ്യത്യസ്ത സ്‌പോഞ്ചുകളിലെ 28 സാമ്പിളുകൾ പരിശോധിക്കുകയും അതിൽ നിന്നും 362 തരം രോഗാണുക്കളെ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. കണ്ടെത്തിയവയിൽ പൊതുവായ പത്തിൽ അഞ്ചെണ്ണത്തിനും മനുഷ്യനിൽ രോഗം പടർത്താനുള്ള സാധ്യത വളരെ കൂടുതലാണെന്നും ​ഗവേഷകർ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. സ്‌പോഞ്ചുകളിൽ സാൽമോണല്ല, ഇ കോളി, സ്റ്റാഫൈലോകോക്കസ് പോലുള്ള ബാക്ടീരിയകളാണ് കൂടുതലായി കണ്ട് വരുന്നതെന്ന് വി​ദ​ഗ്ധർ പറയുന്നു.
    സ്പോഞ്ചുകൾ ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ മാറ്റാൻ പ്രത്യേ‍കം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കണമെന്നും പഠനത്തിൽ പറയുന്നു.
    സ്‌പോഞ്ച് എപ്പോഴും കഴുകി വേണം ഉപയോ​ഗിക്കാൻ. അരക്കപ്പ് വെള്ളത്തിൽ ഒരു സ്പൂൺ നാരങ്ങ നീരും ഉപ്പും ചേർത്ത് 15 മിനിറ്റ് കലക്കി വയ്ക്കുക. ശേഷം നിങ്ങൾ ഉപയോ​ഗിക്കുന്ന സ്പോഞ്ച് ഈ വെള്ളത്തിൽ മുഴുവനായും മുക്കിവയ്ക്കുക.ഒരു മണിക്കൂർ ഈ വെള്ളത്തിൽ മുക്കി വച്ച ശേഷം വെയിലത്ത് വച്ച് നല്ല പോലെ ഉണക്കുക. ആഴ്ച്ചയിൽ രണ്ട് തവണയെങ്കിലും ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്താൽ സ്പോഞ്ചിലെ അണുക്കൾ പൂർണമായും നശിക്കും. തിളച്ച വെള്ളത്തിൽ സ്പോഞ്ച് അൽപ നേരം മുക്കിവയ്ക്കുന്നതും അണുക്കൾ‌ നശിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കും. സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ സ്‌പോഞ്ച് തേഞ്ഞ് ഉപയോഗശൂന്യമാകുന്നത് വരെ നാം ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്. അതാണ് ഒരു സ്‌പോഞ്ചിന്റെ ആയുസ്സെന്നാണ് നാം ധരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ഒരാഴ്ച്ചയേ ഒരു സ്‌പോഞ്ച് ഉപയോഗിക്കാവൂ എന്നാണ് വിദഗ്ധർ പറയുന്നത്.
    എന്നാൽ വളരെ കുറച്ച് പാത്രങ്ങൾ മാത്രമാണ് കഴുകുന്നതെങ്കിൽ അതിൽ കൂടുതൽ സമയം സ്‌പോഞ്ച് ഉപയോഗ
