Why did India ban import of laptops?
The government on Thursday restricted the import of laptops, tablets and computers with immediate effect for security reasons and to promote domestic manufacturing. Laptops and tablets account for a fraction of India’s annual import of electronics of more than $60 billion.
The ban of import of Laptops, tablets and computers will add another layer of incentive for local manufacturing to the existing incentives worth $2 billion assured under the Productivity-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. India is targeting annual production worth $300 billion by 2026 and the restrictions on unlimited imports will compel companies like Dell, Acer, Samsung, LG Electronics, Apple, Lenovo and HP to enhance their assembling or manufacturing facilities in India.

The new crypto Ad Rules have arrived and with this the companies dealing in selling crypto assets may turn into crypto liabilities if they don’t follow the rules. Advertising of virtual digital assets and services needs specific guidance, considering that this is a new and as yet an emerging way of investing, since there is a need to make consumers aware of the risks. The Advertising Standards Council of India has introduced a set of 12 guidelines for the advertisement and promotion of virtual digital assets and services such as cryptos and non-fungible assets, almost three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed “misleading ads” in the cryptocurrency space in November 2021. The guidelines, applicable on ads of crypto-related products from April 1, 2022, say such ads shouldn't carry the words "currency", "securities", "custodian" and "depositories". Ads should carry a disclaimer saying, "Crypto products & NFTs are unregulated and can be highly risky." Information on past performance shall not be provided in a biased manner and there may be no regulatory recourse for any loss from such transactions. The rule comes while there were commercials for cryptocurrency-related products and offerings, which have flooded TV screens over the past year promising easy money, convenient trading, fixed returns and more.
The council has specified the size of print to be used for the disclosure and the manner in which it should be broadcast through the audio-visual medium. In social media posts, such a disclaimer must be carried in the caption as well as any picture or video attachments. The disclaimer must be made in the dominant language of the advertisement. No advertisement may suggest that virtual digital assets could be a solution to money problems. Banning of Crypto could lead to illegal trade
The government released a list of 26 Bills, including the cryptocurrency Bill, to be tabled in the coming winter session of Parliament. There have been widespread speculations of an imminent crypto ban in the Indian crypto circuits and trading circles. There is a high grade of investments that have been in the country into crypto and investment worth hundreds of crores of rupees being driven into the crypto economy by the 15 to 20 million Indian crypto investors. Banning cryptos would not only prove a technological challenge for the government but also mean huge capital funds moving out of the country. A cabinet note says, the government will regulate cryptocurrencies in the country, rather than imposing a ban on their use. The note reportedly states that cryptocurrency will not be recognised as legal currency, and describes the currency as “crypto assets”. These assets will be regulated by India’s market watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and citizens will be required to declare their assets and refrain from keeping them on exchanges outside the country. Individuals holding crypto will be given time to transfer their assets once the bill becomes law. Failing to transfer within the timeframe will lead to financial penalties.

This is partly due to systems that may have been in place for 20 years and cannot be readily upgraded due to 24/7 demand or replacement being cost-prohibitive. The problem ends up being control systems that can no longer be patched for vulnerabilities and often cannot run modern security tools already in use on the IT side of the organization. IT and OT security are very different animals, but organizations cannot afford to look at them as separate entities. IT and OT teams must work together to form an overarching security approach that utilizes the right tools for each environment and rolls security information up into a single pane of glass.

There is a sharp rise in the digital transformation wave and once an attacker gains entry into an enterprise, what happens then? One of the first things they do is compromise credentials. Hardware, software, and firmware are the three core components that make up present-day computers and systems. Hardware includes the physical components of a computer system. Software includes sets of instructions that allow a variety of inputs from the user. Firmware is a specific type (or subset) of software that is designed to act as the intermediary between the software and hardware or for the operation of single-purpose embedded systems, such as printers or routers. End users typically have limited interaction with firmware and it is modified infrequently.
The digital push by the government is changing the way businesses are run in the country, and with growing cyberattack threats, more businesses are emphasizing proper cybersecurity protection. As more businesses adopt digital first strategy with volumes of customer data being collected and stored, cybersecurity as a vertical is poised to grow faster than any predicted numbers. With growing digitisation and adoption of online commerce as well as work from home policies, India is expected to develop local solutions for their cybersecurity needs, and the same will be applicable for the world. The government too is keen on growing homegrown cybersecurity startups, and is working on the data privacy policy. From a macro perspective, the segment is at the cusp of explosive growth.

Purchase of High-end gaming laptops and expensive accessories have surged due to online gaming
India is only second to China in terms of internet users. Plus, the number of active users recorded as 451 million in 2019, are expected to reach 829 million by 2021. With rapid technological advancements, the number of online game developers rose to 275 in 2019 from a meager 25 in 2010. India is on the fast track to becoming a development center for gaming companies. Secondly, adoption of digital payment methods: Digital payment platforms are expected to grow from 100 million users recorded in 2019 to 300 million users in 2022. This has contributed to an increase in online payments on gaming portals. Games are highly engrossing, which makes them ideal to earn revenues. If the content and graphics are good, the gamer will not mind waiting a few seconds for an ad before continuing with their game. Smart monetizing strategies are further making the online gaming sector a hit business.
The number of gamers should reach 440 million by 2022, from about 360 million last year. Popularity of gaming, including e-sports, has surged through the pandemic that has restricted mobility beyond home. The category expanded 12% in 2020, even as the growth was curtailed by a ban on PUBG. But after the pandemic, there was an increase of 90% in the number of people playing esports, while viewership doubled to 17 million, hosted across 14 broadcast platforms. Interestingly, customers are moving toward high-end products like gaming laptops and are investing in more expensive accessories. At the same time, gaming companies are organizing daily practice matches and monthly professional league tournaments, which adhere to global standards of infrastructure, professionalism and skill-level
