Inside the Stealthy World of Global Spyware

Technology remains strong despite growing evidence that governments worldwide have abused spyware by targeting dissidents and critics. Spyware is a type of malicious software designed to monitor a user's activity without their knowledge or consent.

Spyware is used to collect sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, and transmit it to third parties. There are about dozens of spywares available across the globe today like, Pegasus. As the adoption of Spyware increases the market has pegged to reach $12 billion.

A recent report says, Pegasus can turn phones into surveillance devices and can hoover up encrypted WhatsApp and Signal messages surreptitiously. Pegasus-style spyware attack hits politicians and journalists, via iPhone exploits.

The fear of Pegasus-style spyware attack resurfaced recently after researchers at Microsoft and the digital rights group Citizen Lab identified new victims in North America, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East -- once again from an Israel-based spyware maker.

Is Google spying by collecting users data from its Phone and Messaging app ?

Google's Phone and Messaging apps for Android were reportedly collecting and sending data to Google without users' consent and without an option to opt out of it. The data included a hash of the message text and time and duration of calls, a paper by Dublin professor Douglas Leith said. Leith also shared his findings with Google and suggested changes. Whereas, Google said it plans to test monitoring user health through their smartphone microphones and cameras. We're investigating whether built-in microphones can detect heartbeats and help enable early detection of heart valve disorders, Google AI's Senior Research Director Greg Corrado said. He added that Google will also test if photos from smartphones can be used to detect diseases like diabetes. The report says, Google has been collecting extremely detailed data about the calls you make via the Phone app and the text messages exchanged on your Android phone. Google used these Android apps to export massive amounts of data to its servers, and it did so without informing users or obtaining consent. This sort of behaviour might go against privacy protections that should exist in Android by law in some markets (like the EU’s GDPR policies). It could be seen as spying on users.

The report comes at a time when Google keeps trying to convince users that user privacy is important. But while Android users will-fully agree to Google tracking them and collecting personal data that it can turn into ads, they’ve never explicitly told Google that it could collect sensitive phone and text data. In this case, Google might be getting shorter hashed versions of the texts you sent and received in Messages. But it can’t see the actual text, as they’re turned into alphanumeric gibberish. Still, given enough computing resources and time, someone might decode some of the shorter messages. However, the apps do not disclose these data collection practices. But Google requires Android developers to inform user

Israel used cyberweapon on Its own Citizens

Pegasus, which can turn a mobile phone into a pocket spying device, has sparked global controversy following revelations last year that it was used to spy on journalists and dissidents worldwide. Israel’s defence ministry, which must approve all exports of Israeli-made defence industry products, has also opened an investigation into sales of Pegasus overseas. Some said that NSO’s products seemed to solve one of the biggest problems facing law-enforcement and intelligence agencies in the 21st century: that criminals and terrorists had better technology for encrypting their communications than investigators had to decrypt them. The criminal world had gone dark even as it was increasingly going global. Apple has sued NSO, seeking to bar the spyware firm from using its products and services, and said it would start notifying users targeted by state-sponsored hacking. NSO Group is the world’s most notorious maker of spyware and the F.B.I. had bought a version of Pegasus, NSO’s premier spying tool. For nearly a decade, the Israeli firm had been selling its surveillance software on a subscription basis to law-enforcement and intelligence agencies around the world, promising that it could do what no one else, not a private company, not even a state intelligence service could do: consistently and reliably crack the encrypted communications of any iPhone or Android smartphone.

There were certain cases, where the courts are struggling to deal with claims by security and intelligence services that an urgent warrant is needed to approve the use of surveillance systems to protect state security and prevent terrorism. According to the business daily Calcalist, Pegasus was also used by police on citizens at the forefront of protests against Mr. Netanyahu last year, when he was still Prime Minister, as well as other Israelis. Israeli police have firmly denied the report. Public Security Minister Omar Barlev, a Netanyahu critic who took office as part of a new government tha

The ambiguities surrounding the digital currency still leave enough space for the analysis of its unreserved acceptance, trust and anticipation, which are the main drivers for the spread of the network. It is time for the Banks to carefully consider the technology underlying these cryptocurrencies as a potential generic new way of transferring ownership of the value over the long term. Especially Bitcoin is the technology adoption in the presence of network externalities. The growth in digital currencies could make cross-border payments more efficient and help address the $1.7 trillion global trade financing gap. These burgeoning currencies may not solve all trade issues, however, and could further complicate the supply and demand of foreign exchange, especially for countries with limited existing international trade. There is no doubt that the digital currencies are growing: the market is valued at more than $2 trillion and involves more than 15,000 varieties. Based on the Atlantic Council’s CBDC tracker, nine countries or currency unions have launched their digital currencies, while 15 are in the pilot phase. Additionally, 16, including India, are in the development stage, and 40 are in the research stage. Seven are inactive and two have cancelled any plans to launch it.

Digital currencies could provide alternative credit information for trade finance and there’s a $1.7 trillion global trade financing gap, which heavily impacts SMEs who typically don’t have established financial records with banks. Public ledgers of digital currencies could be used to share payment and financial history to underwrite loans for import and export. At the same time, strong privacy protocols would need to be enforced in order to achieve this. The Reserve Bank of India will launch the CBDC from the upcoming financial year. This follows the government’s plans to launch the CBDC that will be backed by bloc

The Juniper Research new study, Digital Advertising Fraud: Key Trends, Competitor Landscape & Market Forecasts 2022-2026, found that those advertising in the US will potentially suffer the most in financial loss due to fraudulent activity, with total losses in the US expected to surpass $23 billion in 2022. The comprehensive research identified the top 5 countries most impacted by advertising fraud, which together account for 60% of global losses are US, Japan, China, South Korea and UK together account for 60 per cent of global digital advertising spend losses. The US represents the largest market for digital advertising spend, with high levels of Internet penetration and elevated mobile app and browser usage presenting strong opportunities for the display of promotional content. The researchers urged digital advertisers targeting these five key markets to form strategic partnerships with ad fraud detection and prevention vendors capable of distinguishing between valid and fraudulent advertising traffic that provides no return on ad spend.

Research author Scarlett Woodford remarked: “With the US representing such a significant market in terms of advertising spend, campaigns in North America will undoubtedly attract the attention of fraudulent players. This will lead to unprecedented innovation in fraud tactics within the US, with advertisers demonstrating a greater requirement for fraud detection and mitigation services.” In response to the rising threat of ad fraud, the report urges digital advertisers targeting these five markets to form strategic partnerships with ad fraud detection and prevention vendors capable of distinguishing between valid and fraudulent advertising traffic that provides no retu

Technology has almost revolutionised our way of living, starting from how we work, communicate, visualise and adapt to things. It has brought about a plethora of ways to make our lives easier, faster, better and at times it turns out to be risky. It has been observed that there has been a big shift towards digital banking, i.e., around 22% of Indian adults which is estimated to be about 205 million, say they have a digital only bank account-a number that is set to grow in the coming days. Undoubtedly, digital banking adoption is also enabling people to overcome the bottlenecks of simple internet banking. At the same time, AI is a game-changer for businesses since it improves productivity, lowers cost, unlocks job expansion and creates growth opportunities. Artificial Intelligence is considered beneficial for big organizations and has been approached from three diverse lenses, i.e., agility, resilience, and sustainability. However, AI Promises Benefits, But Also Poses Urgent Challenges That Cut Across Firms, Developers, Government, And Workers. The Workforce Needs To Be Reskilled To Exploit AI Rather Than Compete With It.

AI and ML are extremely useful for Security, for instance. It allows the system to identify a pattern of use, mannerisms, data transfers, accessibility, etc. At any slight deviation, say irregular log in requests by employees or accessing of databases through unknown systems, AI tracks the disruption and alerts the authorities immediately so that the crisis can be averted. Hence, by intercepting and mitigating potential breaches or leaks, AI and ML become crucial tools for prevention from the security point of view. The global market value of the AI sector is expected to touch $ 15.7 trillion in 2030 while its impact in the Middle East could be felt to the tune of $ 320 billion with UAE leading the race. PEGASUS – A WEAPON FOR A DIFFERENT WAR

Journalists and news organizations can do yeomen service to the world by opening our eyes to the wheeling dealing, which happens in the name of statecraft, diplomacy and internal security. They also give us a peep into the world’s underbelly, which is greasy and is kept intact in the name of security, territorial integrity, sovereignty and the ultimate power of the nation states not to divulge anything. All we need to understand is how tech is used for things it is not meant for and not made public. A recent news from the apex court of the country said, there is a strong indicator state used Pegasus for spying, pointing to the involvement of "the state, its intelligence and law enforcement agencies" in using Pegasus for unauthorised surveillance, at least two cybersecurity experts told the Supreme Court-appointed committee. A researcher reportedly analysed iPhones of seven people, of which two were found to be infected with Pegasus, Cyber experts told the Supreme Court panel. Pegasus can be very safely be termed as the most potent weapon, since the atom bomb. A year-long investigation including inputs from government officials, leaders of intelligence and law enforcement agencies, cyber weapon experts and lots others has clearly proven how Israel’s ability to approve or deny access to NSO’s cyberweapons has been entangled with its diplomacy. In a shocking news, Chief Executive Officer of NSO Group, Shalev Hulio, in an interview to Israeli Channel 12 said, strongly defended the company's operations, though he also conceded that some "mistakes" may have happened over the years. Our technology has over the years helped the interests and national security of the United States quite a bit," he claimed.

Beware of cyber threats to be witnessed in 2022

In 2021, we saw a dangerous increase in #ransomwareattacks, causing devastating compromises to government organizations, critical infrastructure, and businesses. The sophistication and scale of cyber-attacks will continue to break records and we can expect a huge increase in the number of ransomware and mobile attacks. The year 2021 being one of the worst years for cybercrime — and 2022 is expected to be even worse. The year 2022, Ransomware will successfully hit a cloud service provider that houses business systems. They will lock up both the backup and the operations making it very hard not to pay the ransom. We saw how the AWS outages last month were able to cripple businesses, and we can be sure that bad actors took notice as well. In 2022, cyber operatives will successfully hit a mid-market financial institution -- and in their wake, they will disclose that they stole a significant amount of money. When the disclosure is public, AI-powered chatbots, mimicking human behaviours on social media, will create global sentiment issues about the stability of banks by posting misinformation online and sharing news stories that appear legitimate. In 2022, we can expect to see an increase in similar cryptocurrency related incidents and attacks, because of this, market models -- powered by artificial intelligence that surfs the Web looking for leading indicators -- quickly become overwhelmed with the negative press and process "sell" orders for the financial sector writ large, causing people to panic and withdraw funds and/or flood the system with requests causing a mini Black Swan event.

Secondly, Extended Reality (XR) will experience its first major hack. In 2022, we will begin to see XR -- which includes AR, VR and MR -- used to conduct global gatherings without travel, hug the sick and the lonely remotely, train children in a way that's more emotionally supportive while remote, and more. The pandemic has been a boon to cybercriminals

IT security leaders need to adapt rapidly, collaborate effectively, and recalibrate their security strategies as networks get more dynamic and complex. Cybercriminals are getting more and more adept at exploiting the latest trend or issue of high public interest to spread malware and steal personal data from unsuspecting users. The pandemic triggered tectonic shifts of workplace from physical to virtual has led to enterprises accelerating their digital transformation, thereby, adding high demand on their network capacity. The pandemic has been a boon to cybercriminals, taking advantage of an opportunity to profit from our dependence on technology to go on an internet crime spree. Whether it is the distributed workforce or migration of data and applications to multi-cloud environments, the network is the nerve system connecting the various constituents. There is an urgent need to protect your devices against the most common types of malwares, but we also need security built into technology to prevent these sophisticated cyberattacks.

Mobile devices have become a fixture of every-day life for millions of people. Across the globe, web-enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets have evolved into essential tools for communication, information, and entertainment alike. In 2020, the number of unique mobile internet users stood at 4.28 billion, indicating that over 90% of the global internet population use a mobile device to go online. Mobile devices are now the primary access point for the internet. This is reflected in the increased targeting of mobile devices with cyberattacks, with complaints of phishing and smishing attacks — emails or SMS text messages with malicious links. Cybercriminals utilize sophisticated techniques that exploit human psychology and behaviors to deceive users and penetrate devices. Experts warn that mobile device owners may be more vulnerable

Data Security & privacy - top priorities

Data security and privacy are top priorities while using digital banking following the Covid-19 pandemic. In the coming days banks are expected to launch more cyber-security and privacy features. The sharp rise in the number of scams during the pandemic has contributed to this fear. The scammers and fraudsters potentially have access to some of the data which has been lost over the last few years, now they are combining this with social engineering skills. The increased sophistication and targeted attack brings consumers and Banks at risk, now banks also finds difficulty to differentiate between good and bad actors. There is urgency for banks to increase their digital transformation, and do so at pace. “On the digital transformation side we can see financial institutions moving to cloud, including industry-specific cloud, as well as adopting emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) or data analytics, and overall, much cleverer solutions end to end in the context of security. Quite often that means that financial institutions will need to use trusted solutions from third parties, and do that at pace so they don't have to spend 12-24 months validating those solutions.

The pandemic pushed more customers towards digital banking, bringing these concerns to the forefront. A survey found a 15% drop in customers visiting physical bank branches after the first lockdown ended. However, despite this, YouGov also found that only 15% of respondents had a digital-only bank account. The pandemic acted as a catalyst on both sides, on the consumer side for adopting digital services, and on the bank side, because branches were shut, they had to find more innovative ways to enhance self-service channels. Additionally, younger groups were more likely to be interested in AI being incorporated in their banking. One element of this AI service is chatbots and other text-base

    #Zoom #Apple #TCS

The ongoing push towards remote work and the acceleration of hiring plans in 2021 has exacerbated IT talent scarcity, especially for sourcing skills that enable cloud and edge, automation and continuous delivery, as per Gartner. IT executives cited talent availability as the main adoption risk factor for the majority of IT automation technologies (75%) and nearly half of digital workplace technologies (41%). Talent availability is cited as a leading factor inhibiting adoption among all six technology domains included in the survey – compute infrastructure and platform services, network, security, digital workplace, IT automation and storage and database. Despite talent challenges, infrastructure and operations and other IT leaders have increased the adoption of emerging technologies to drive innovation as organizations begin to recover from the pandemic.

Across all technology domains, 58% of respondents reported either an increase or a plan to increase emerging technology investment in 2021, compared with 29% in 2020. Furthermore, Infrastructure & Operations functions have witnessed a reduction in deployment timelines, with all technologies in deployment expected to reach adoption within the next six to 18 months. This indicates that organizations feel more comfortable directly deploying new technologies to accelerate growth, rather than relying on an extended observation period to develop the business case. Resilience and improving critical IT infrastructure are top priorities among Infrastructure & Operations and other IT leaders in 2021, according to the survey. As a result, they are prioritizing cloud deployments and investments in security technologies. In addition, infrastructure security is a significant priority for organizations as they tackle rising threats, particularly to endpoint devices in hybrid work environments. Is Pegasus over??

Pegasus spyware has taken the world by a storm. Developed by an Israeli cyber arms firm, NSO group, Pegasus can be secretly installed on mobile phones and other iOS and android devices without even a single user click. It snoops into text messages, tracks calls, passwords, location and even steals sensitive data from apps. Discovered in 2016, the malicious spyware used jailbreak to gain access to an iPhone. The trojan horse has been reported to be sold to the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states including India for surveillance purposes. In July 2021, it was revealed by human rights group Amnesty International that the project Pegasus has been used to tap phones of high profile targets including more than 300 journalists, politicians and media activists in India. This is not the first time such a revelation was made. Such attacks were reported even in 2018-19 when Whatsapp wajed a legal battle in the U.S against NSO alleging NSO had hacked into Whatsapp video calls in several devices.

NSO group claims it sells the technology to authorised governments but little is known if that is the case. Whether the same has been used for criminal and national security investigations alone or to commit corporate espionage or unauthorised surveillance is a pertinent question. If used unauthorizedly, or illegally , it would tantamount to invasion of privacy and a gross violation of human rights. Are we following the rule of law in India? Although many of these safeguards are built into the extant IT Act and rules, the Personal Data Protection bill is yet underway and there is little or no evidence to question invasion of privacy through hacking and/or arbitrary exercise of surveillance powers. Though Section 66 of IT Act, 2000 entitles a user to seek compensation for unauthorised access and copying of personal data and Section 43A entitles a user to sue a body corporate for fa

Technology - crucial part of our daily lives

Technology has not only fostered innovation in our country but has also enabled the citizens to aspire for financial and digital freedom. Technological developments have led to revolutionary inclusive innovations such as blockchain, with digital assets like Bitcoin and Ether, taking the Indian youth by storm. They offer millennials and zillennials, who are now dabbling in alternative investment options a chance to attain financial freedom. Bitcoin is built on blockchain and provides unprecedented freedom that accompanies decentralisation. It places the power in the hands of the investors and eliminates barriers around transfers and mobility. Bitcoin and Ether are the biggest and oldest cryptocurrencies backed by sound technologies, and long-term disciplined investment in them can bring great returns and further the agenda of economic independence.

Technology especially became a crucial part of our daily lives in the socially distanced world. Industries all over adopted digitisation at record speeds to cater to the changing consumer needs and to stay relevant. The recently launched e-RUPI, while not built on blockchain, is a type of digital currency that shares some basic principles with blockchain of eliminating the middlemen to ensure the benefits, reach the beneficiaries seamlessly, digitally and without any leaks, leading to greater financial freedom that, empowers beneficiaries with leak-proof, digital, cashless and streamlined access to benefits without the need for middlemen. Financial inclusion will foster equitable financial freedom for the vulnerable and marginalised sections of the society, especially women, and are great enablers for balanced growth of the country.

Consumer Digital Economy to touch $800Bn

India's digital economy is expected to touch $800 billion by 2030 making it the third-largest digital economy, said a report by consulting firm Redseer on June 30. It was pegged at $85-90 billion in 2020. Online retail is set to become the third-largest online retail market by scale by CY30 with an annual gross merchandise value (GMV) of $55 billion in CY21 and $350 billion in CY30, said RedSeer at its flagship event Ground Zero 5.0. India is going to become the 3rd largest online retail market by CY30. E-Logistics in India has become the fastest growing market globally with over 3 billion shipments in 2020. India traditionally had an inefficient supply chain with a slow and undemocratic access. With the rise of e-commerce, the need for specialised delivery services emerged, which has led to the overall growth of the logistics segment. With multiple startups enabling kiranas with cashless payments and digital bookkeeping, the segment is expected to achieve $1.5 trillion sales by 2030.

COVID-19 has caused an inflection in e-commerce penetration across smaller cities. The emergence of this sector has created 5lakh employment for gig workers in 2021 across captive and 3PL. The new-age 3PL logistics players have delivered 850 million shipments in 2020. There is a sharp rise in digital content and advertisements see higher demand. On the other hand, online content is seeing phenomenal growth leading to the overall growth of the digital ad industry as well. Digital content is emerging as the bellwether of demand creation for time spent. India, one of the largest economies, is surging ahead on content and smartphone usage. Monthly active users have become democratised with increasing adoption of varied digital services and platforms.

Data Uberization helps SaaS market growth

The SaaS market is reaching a higher revenue size than both IaaS and PaaS combined—at least for the time being. Ultimately, though SaaS might begin to slow this year, geo-economics may reverse that slowdown. By 2022, SaaS is expected to generate double the revenue of PaaS and significantly more than IaaS. We realize, however, that a significant portion of their revenue comes from selling on-premise software—so while they’re huge tech companies, calling them SaaS providers is a misnomer. This demand for subscription-based pricing models, however, is spurring legacy companies to rapidly migrate their software solutions to a SaaS consumption model. A report says, the coming three years is going to witness a huge pile of data ,which we might have seen in the last 30 years. We are going to witness several new companies to enter into the segment of Artificial Intelligence and SaaS based solutions. By 2021, 73% of organizations will be using all or mostly SaaS solutions.

Nearly 85% of small companies have already invested in SaaS options. This means there is strong potential for growth of SaaS products in the coming years as their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) matches that of the on-premise software deployment models. Organizations dominating the enterprise software space—IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, and SAP—will likely maintain their market share for enterprise software products, as a growing number of customers can take advantage of the same product capabilities with the feasible subscription-based pricing model. However, the industry is still riddled with a lot of challenges in terms of talent and which is why organisations have started pouring a substantial amount of money in building their data science and analytics team. Organisations regardless of their positions have been using data science and analytics to garner insights from data.

    The growing Indian SaaS firms

The Indian SaaS space has the potential to create $1 trillion in value and nearly five lakh jobs by 2030, as businesses around the world accelerate digitization and automation, A new study says. There are more than a thousand funded startups and 10 unicorns in the country’s SaaS sector, generating as much as $3 billion in annual subscription revenues, according to a report of SaaSBoomi. The report further says, the industry, which currently employs 40,000 workers, could generate annual revenues of as much as $70 billion by 2030 and win as much as 6% of the global market. However, many startups face challenges in accessing capital during their early stages and attracting skilled talent to grow. The industry may need to boost funding at three to four times the current level to reach their potential over the next 10 years.

Despite the challenges, “India has an exciting opportunity to propel itself on to the world stage as a SaaS force to be reckoned with. SaaS and software accounted for $600 billion of the $3 trillion in global enterprise IT and communications spending last year. The industry is growing at an 8% annual rate, twice the pace of the overall IT market. Covid-19 has created a further push toward SaaS, with six Indian SaaS unicorns created during the pandemic. The report highlights, more than 1,000 SaaS companies are operating in India as of now and more than 150 SaaS start-ups have $1 million in ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue), with this the global SaaS market will grow at a pace of 18-20% each year, with more than $500 billion in revenue by 2025.

Edge is the centre of everything

Data is the lifeblood of modern business, providing valuable business insight and supporting real-time control over critical business processes and operations. Edge computing is a distributed information technology architecture in which client data is processed at the periphery of the network, as close to the originating source as possible. In our individual lock-down environments, each of us is an edge node of the Internet, and all our computing is, mostly, edge computing. Research predicts that between 2019 and 2028, cumulative capital expenditures of up to $800 billion will be spent on new and replacement IT server equipment and edge computing facilities. These expenditures will be relatively evenly split between equipment for the device and infrastructure edges. The new digital norms created in response to the pandemic will be permanent. This will intensify the deployment of new technologies like wireless 5G and autonomous vehicles but will also impact nearly every sector of the economy, from industrial manufacturing to healthcare.

Edge computing is the deployment of computing and storage resources at the location where data is produced. This ideally puts compute and storage at the same point as the data source at the network edge. Edge computing is reshaping IT and business computing. As Gartner predicts by 2025, 75% of enterprise-generated data will be created outside of centralized data centres. The prospect of moving so much data in situations that can often be time- or disruption-sensitive puts incredible strain on the global internet, which itself is often subject to congestion and disruption. So IT architects have shifted focus from the central data centre to the logical edge of the infrastructure -- taking storage and computing resources from the data centre and moving those resources to the point where the data is generated. The 2020 findings underscore t

Supply chain security is the part of supply chain management that focuses on the risk management of external suppliers, vendors, logistics and transportation. Its goal is to identify, analyze and mitigate the risks inherent in working with other organizations as part of a supply chain. Supply chain security involves both physical security relating to products and cybersecurity for software and services. Because supply chains can vary greatly from group to group, and many different organizations may be involved, there is no single set of established supply chain security guidelines or best practices. A complete supply chain security strategy requires risk management principles and cyber defense in depth. It also takes into account protocols set by government agencies like the Department of Homeland Security or customs regulations for international supply chains.

In the Supply chain attack Cyber criminals may choose to attack a third party in order to gain access to their main target or targets. In the past, supply chain security primarily focused on physical security and integrity. Physical threats encompass risks with both internal and external sources, such as theft, sabotage and terrorism. The recent cyberthreats have risen to the forefront of supply chain security concerns. Cyberthreats include vulnerabilities in IT and software systems, like malware attacks, piracy, unauthorized ERP access and unintentional or maliciously injected backdoors in the purchased, open source or proprietary software used by organizations. Cybercriminals attack a weaker organization in the target's supply chain and use that access to meet their goals. Recently, Chinese government has ordered that its ministries stop using foreign-made hardware and software by 2022. Supply chain security touches on many areas, and will vary greatly from organization to organization. R

Deep dive into the world of security

The world is undergoing a drastic transformation. With vast amounts of data becoming a part of our daily lives, we are seeing limitless AI opportunities opening up across all industries and functions. The recent Pegasus is just indicative of the world we live in, where all controls are moving out of the known legal hands to the technologist and the digital world in some form or other. The capability to impact our lives is phenomenal while we know nothing of the nitty gritty of it. Even the governments who are our guardians also seem to be equally at a loss. Who passes orders nobody knows, in whichever sector we talk and the world goes on… Transparency is also maintained. Accountability is also unknown. The digital tank can be bought by anybody, there might be lots of issues in buying the physical one. If we don’t accept the harsh realities of our digital existence, it would be a roller coaster ride for this country for all times to come.

The question is, can we call it a digital weapon ? You have a nuclear non-proliferation treaty, can we not have something of that nature for digital weapon non-proliferation. The Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 came into being when interception of messages / voice communication would have been an engineering marvel. Now that the mobile is a veritable storehouse of all that you know about yourself and much more, what you don’t know about yourself, which the data of all types on your phone and the connected metadata can throw up. From telegraph to interception of messages to taking over your mobile i.e. your life itself, belongs to different worlds. We have created this digital mess; it would be cruel to leave it as our digital legacy. With the social media and data mess all around, is this we had bargained for!

Finally, it would lead the smartphone owners to go for Encrypted Mobile Phones to secure their communications.

    MacOS too not safe

A recent report from Check Point Research says that a malware strain has evolved to steal the information of MacOS users. For as low as $49 on the Darknet, hackers can buy licenses for the new malware, enabling capabilities to harvest log-in credentials, collect screenshots, log keystrokes, and execute malicious files. It has Named “XLoader”, the new strain is a derivative of the famous “Formbook” malware family, which mainly targeted Windows users, but disappeared from being on sale in 2018. Formbook rebranded to XLoader in 2020. Over the past six months, Check Point Research studied XLoader’s activities, learning that XLoader is prolific, targeting not just Windows, but surprisingly, Mac users as well. Hackers can buy XLoader licenses on the Darknet for as low as $49.

Checkpoint Research tracked Xloader activity between December 1, 2020 and June 1, 2021. It saw XLoader requests from as many as 69 countries. Over half (53%) of the victims reside in the United States. XLoader is usually spread by spoofed emails that lure their victims into downloading and opening a malicious file, usually Microsoft Office documents. Since this malware is stealth in nature, it is likely difficult for a “non-technical” eye to recognize whether they have been infected. They usually fall into the category of ‘spyware’, not causing too much damage. Secondly, there is a common incorrect belief with MacOS users that Apple platforms are more secure than other more widely used platforms. While there might be a gap between Windows and MacOS malware, the gap is slowly closing over time. The truth is that MacOS malware is becoming bigger and more dangerous. The recent findings are a perfect example and confirm this growing trend. With the increasing popularity of MacOS platforms, it makes sense for cyber criminals to show more interest in this domain, and we can anticipate seeing more cyber threats

Your Smartphone can become a weapon toll

Pegasus, created by NSO of Israel, goes down as the deadliest tool made for compromising smartphones. #NSO is best known for marketing #Pegasus. This is a highly invasive tool which is said to switch on a target’s cell phone camera & microphone and access it’s data. In real terms the phone is turned into a pocket spy. PEGASUS is well recognised as the POCKET SPY. What it could mean to the future of democracy need not be debated. The usage of this tool is to go through the Israeli govt. route. #Facebook in October, owner of #WhatsApp filed a suit against NSO in US levelling charges that this company has been using this popular messaging service as a platform to conduct cyber espionage. It claims this sort of espionage was conducted on nearly 1,400 journalists, diplomats and human rights activists worldwide.

It’s been used as a political tool, is the claim. Senior officials of over 20 countries allied with the US have reportedly been the targets of the hacking campaign. NSO on the other hand has requested the court to sanction Facebook for $17,000 as legal fees. It challenges the basic premise of the lawsuit stating that it only provides software to governments with the only purpose of fighting terrorism and crime. A subject matter expert says, this seems to be the replay of the FBI and Apple case, though this time both the parties to the case are private business entities. In the interplay of these two legendary companies comes the roles of governments and how data / fact / official work and approval is devised and taken through. Hence, the capability of being able to get, use and manipulate data by hook or by crook is turning out to be the winning combination. The legal battle will always be an afterthought.

Competitive differentiator for e-commerce players in India

    #DigitalMedia #Pegasus #ITMinister
Digital media spending on search advertising

There is massive shift in an individual’s online browsing and searching pattern has paved the way for brands looking to invest in search advertising. There has been a steady growth of search as a digital medium across PC and Mobile in India with approximately 25% of digital media spends accounting for search advertising. While some brands have already started leveraging this medium to achieve their larger business goals, others can leverage search advertising to create a smarter customer journey to reach the right audience, with the right message. A 28x increase was observed for the keyword ‘most popular Netflix series’ and 381x for ‘cricket live score’. There has also been a significant increase in online gaming which is reflected in the 52% increase in online games related searches.

Additionally, searches for education and e-learning related content also saw a massive spike. People have been investing a lot of effort in future-proofing their careers by learning skills that would either help them transition to a new career or progress in the existing one. There has been a 367% increase in searches related to ‘learning online’, while a 103% increase in those related to ‘training’. Increasingly eco-conscious consumers and investors are placing greater importance on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues than ever before. As a result, e-commerce players have begun to make their supply chains greener and the startups are following the trend. As the business operations affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic induced travel restrictions and lockdowns, consumers are now increasingly preferring the online mode to purchase goods and services. Consequently, the Indian e-commerce (online retailing) industry is going to grow at a CAGR of 22% between 2020 and 2024 to be worth US$115.5bn in 2024.
