Can tech and collaboration combat money laundering ?
Using payments data, privacy-enhancing technologies, AI and enhanced cooperation for a behavioural-based analysis approach to detecting money laundering networks is more effective than the current rules-based approach, concludes new research from the BIS Innovation Hub.
According to the Financial Action Task Force, almost all large money laundering schemes are cross-border and involve different business sectors. Meanwhile, financial institutions often face limitations in detecting potential suspicious networks and transactions due to their reliance on fragmented data and systems.

India’s unemployment rate, Understanding the Magnitude of the Problem
India's unemployment rate has risen to a three-month high of 7.8% in March amid concerns a global slowdown will hurt Asia’s third-largest economy. Whereas, the private sector plays a crucial role in job creation and economic growth, and their efforts to address the unemployment problem are important.
Collaboration between the private sector and the government is crucial in addressing the unemployment problem. This could include public-private partnerships aimed at promoting employment-intensive industries and creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow and create jobs.
Unemployment is a serious concern, as it not only affects individuals and families but also has wider economic and social implications. The uptick follows early signs of cooling demand in the $3.2 trillion economy, where policy makers have been battling runaway inflation like their peers in the rest of the world.
"India's labour markets deteriorated in March 2023. The unemployment rate increased from 7.5% in February to 7.8% in March. The effect of this is compounded by the simultaneous fall in the labour force participation rate, which fell from 39.9% to 39.8% , as per the report from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy.
This led to a fall in the employment rate from 36.9% in February to 36.7% in March, this has led to the employment fell from 409.9 million to 407.6 million.

#5G is the fastest growing segment in the wireless network infrastructure market . Worldwide 5G network infrastructure revenue is on pace to grow 39% to total $19.1 billion in 2021, up from $13.7 billion in 2020. Of the segments that comprise wireless infrastructure in this forecast, the only significant opportunity for investment growth is in 5G. Communications service providers (CSPs) in mature markets accelerated 5G development in 2020 and 2021 with 5G representing 39% of total wireless infrastructure revenue this year. “The COVID-19 pandemic spiked demand for optimized and ultrafast broadband connectivity to support work-from-home and bandwidth-hungry applications, such as streaming video, online gaming and social media applications. Business and customer demand is an influencing factor in this growth. As consumers return to the office, they will continue to upgrade or switch to gigabit fiber to the home service as connectivity has become an essential remote work service. Whereas the users will also increasingly scrutinize CSPs for both office and remote work needs.
The annual spend on network and hardware services will reach $12 billion globally by 2023, rising 116% from the $5.5 billion expected for 2021, according Juniper Research. 5G deployments will play a key role here. More than 60% of base stations in deployments in 2023 will be 5G, it said. Telecom equipment vendors such as Ericsson and Nokia are best placed to capitalize on private networks through their hardware and value-added services that they can offer directly to private enterprises. Telecom operators that are dominant in the public cellular market, however, may lose out on opportunities in private networks space. Digital transformation driving future banking
For the banks to get success in the digital age, the only mantra is banks need to embrace emerging technology, remain flexible to adopt evolving business models, and put customers at the center of every strategy. India needs four or five more banks like the State Bank of India, said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The FM said, India needs to scale up banking to meet the changing requirements in light of the shifting realities of the economy and industry. “We need not just more, but bigger banks. If we look at the post-Covid scenario, India’s banking contour will have to be very unique to the country, where there has been an extremely successful adoption of digitization. The level of digitization of Indian banks helped us to transfer money to small, medium and big account holders through DBT and digital mechanisms.
The need of the hour is Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) to improve the access of banking in every district through a rationalised approach and optimal utilisation of digital technologies, and to carry out digitised mapping of all bank branches in every district of the country. “Almost two-thirds of nearly 7.5 lakh panchayats have optical fibre connections. The IBA should consider this and conduct an exercise to decide where banks should have a physical presence and where we are able to serve customers without the presence of a branch. Such nimbleness and agility are especially important for India to be able to achieve the ambitious export targets of $2 trillion by 2030, $1 trillion in merchandise exports and $1 trillion in service exports. The banking industry needs specialists to understand the unique business requirements of diverse sectors and the businesses that are rapidly relocating to India. Bhumi Pednekar on reaction to Thank You For Coming, OMG 2, lack of gender equality, viewer hypocrisy
Bhumi Pednekar recently appeared in the comedy Thank You For Coming and the film invited some extreme reactions from the viewers. While some praised the film for its bold concept, some shamed it for that. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble host Akash Bhatnagar, Bhumi spoke about the latter group of people and slammed them for the shaming. She expressed her disappointment towards people who didn’t criticise the film but its intent. The actress discussed the prevalent gender bias and how people never took offence when she was a part of such stories told from a male perspective. She pointed out how Pankaj Tripathi and Akshay Kumar starrer OMG 2 was supported by the same people who shamed her film, when somewhere they dealt with the same subject. Bhumi revealed if not getting any support from women within the industry disappointed her. She highlighted the hypocrisy of the situation that people accept objectification of women but have a problem with them talking about their sexuality. You can watch the entire conversation here.
