  • Karen Black dies of cancer aged 74

    Illinois-born actress earned a Golden Globe award for her role as Rayette, the waitress in 1970 drama Five Easy Pieces.



    US actress Karen Black, who played leading roles in 1970s films Five Easy Pieces and Nashville, died in Los Angeles on Thursday, her representatives said. She was 74.

    Black had been suffering from cancer in recent years, her publicist, Elliot Mintz, said.

    Black was best known for her role as Rayette, the big-dreaming waitress in the 1970 working-class drama Five Easy Pieces, in which she starred alongside Jack Nicholson.

    The role earned Black a Golden Globe award for best supporting actress and an Oscar nomination.

    She also played a prominent role as a country singer in the ensemble cast of Robert Altman's 1975 musical drama Nashville.

    Black was diagnosed with ampullary cancer, which is similar to pancreatic cancer, in 2010, and made headlines earlier this year after turning to the internet to help fund her medical treatment. She and her husband raised about $62,000 (£40,000), according to her fundraising page.

    Illinois-born Black won another best supporting actress Golden Globe award for the role of mistress Myrtle Wilson in 1974's The Great Gatsby and was also lauded for her role as an aspiring actress in the 1975 drama The Day of the Locust.

    Karen Black, an actress whose roles in several signature films of the late 1960s and ’70s included a prostitute who shared an LSD trip with the bikers played by Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider” and a waitress unhappily devoted to the alienated musician played by Jack Nicholson in “Five Easy Pieces,” died on Thursday in Los Angeles. She was 74.
    The cause was complications of cancer, her husband, Stephen Eckelberry, said. Ms. Black’s battle with ampullary cancer, a rare form similar to pancreatic cancer, became public in March when she and Mr. Eckelberry sought contributions on a fund-raising Web site to pay for an experimental treatment.

    Ms. Black began her career as a stage ingénue but was never really the ingénue on the screen. A rangy, imperfect beauty — her eyes were set ever so slightly off-kilter — she spent the better part of a decade as one of the movies’ most vivid character actresses. At a time when the women’s movement was surging, she rarely played the self-liberating woman — as did, say, Ellen Burstyn or Jill Clayburgh — but she was often a brassy, attention-grabbing presence in films whose main characters were men.

    In “Drive, He Said” (1971), Mr. Nicholson’s directorial debut, she played a faculty wife in an affair with a college athlete (William Tepper).     Hollywood star Karen Black, who featured in cult films such as Five Easy Pieces and Nashville, has died aged 74.

    Hugely prolific, the Illinois-born actress appeared in more than 100 movies over a career spanning 40 years.

    She shot to fame in 1969, starring as a prostitute in Easy Rider opposite Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper.

    She died at a clinic in Los Angeles, three years after she was diagnosed with cancer.

    Her fourth husband, Stephen Eckelberry, posted the news on his Facebook page.

    "It is with great sadness that I have to report that my wife and best friend, Karen Black has just passed away, only a few minutes ago," he wrote.

    "Thank you all for all your prayers and love, they meant so much to her as they did to me."

    Stars paid tribute to Black on Twitter, including Mia Farrow who tweeted: "Wonderful Karen Black rest in peace."

    Actress Juliette Lewis said: "Karen Black was my mentor and a 2nd mother to me. She inspired everyone she came in contact with. Her spirit/strength My luv [sic] is beyond words."

    Black, who was raised in a Chicago suburb, almost always played troubled, neurotic characters.

    She earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award for her role as Rayette Dipesto in 1970 film Five Easy Pieces, opposite Jack Nicholson, as a waitress who dates an upper-class dropout.
