Illinois-born actress earned a Golden Globe award for her role as Rayette, the waitress in 1970 drama Five Easy Pieces.



US actress Karen Black, who played leading roles in 1970s films Five Easy Pieces and Nashville, died in Los Angeles on Thursday, her representatives said. She was 74.

Black had been suffering from cancer in recent years, her publicist, Elliot Mintz, said.

Black was best known for her role as Rayette, the big-dreaming waitress in the 1970 working-class drama Five Easy Pieces, in which she starred alongside Jack Nicholson.

The role earned Black a Golden Globe award for best supporting actress and an Oscar nomination.

She also played a prominent role as a country singer in the ensemble cast of Robert Altman's 1975 musical drama Nashville.

Black was diagnosed with ampullary cancer, which is similar to pancreatic cancer, in 2010, and made headlines earlier this year after turning to the internet to help fund her medical treatment. She and her husband raised about $62,000 (£40,000), according to her fundraising page.

Illinois-born Black won another best supporting actress Golden Globe award for the role of mistress Myrtle Wilson in 1974's The Great Gatsby and was also lauded for her role as an aspiring actress in the 1975 drama The Day of the Locust.

She also played a small part as a prostitute in the 1969 counter-cultur

  • The Charlatans drummer Jon Brookes dies, aged 44, after a battle with brain cancer

    The musician passed away in hospital earlier this morning, surrounded by friends and family after battling against brain cancer for three years.

    The star - who was diagnosed with the disease after collapsing on stage during a gig in Philadelphia in 2010 - had undergone a number of operations and recently rejoined his bandmates to work on new music.

    However, a statement on the band's website announced the sad news. It read: "It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Jon Brookes, the drummer with The Charlatans, died this morning aged 44.
    "Following a seizure on tour in Philadephia in 2010, Jon had been receiving treatment for a brain tumour and had undergone several operations, although he had been working on new material with the band over the summer… He passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning with his family at his bedside."

    It continued: "Jon was a founding member of The Charlatans, who formed in the West Midlands in 1989. He was much loved by those who knew him and regarded as one of the finest drummers of his generation and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

    "Jon was a brilliant drummer, an inspiration, a founding member of The Charlatans, part of our family and a friend to everyone in and around the band. Losing someone who was always so full of life is a tragedy that will be shared by so many. Our thoughts are with Debbie and all of Jon

    He was first diagnosed after suffering a seizure and collapsing on stage in Philadelphia while on tour with the band in 2010.

    Singer Tim Burgess paid tribute on Twitter, writing: 'Jon Brookes, my friend, our drummer and inspiration to so many, passed away this morning.

    'We are torn apart. Love & thoughts to Jon's family.'

    A statement on the band’s website added: 'Jon was a brilliant drummer, an inspiration, a founding member of The Charlatans, part of our family and a friend to everyone in and around the band.

    'Losing someone who was always so full of life is a tragedy that will be shared by so many. Our thoughts are with Debbie and all of Jon's family.'

    Jon had undergone a number of operations and rejoined the band to work on new material this summer.

    After a recent operation he said: 'I will never be able to express my heartfelt thanks for all the love and light I received.'
