Rahul Gandhi addressed a public rally in Aurangabad, Maharashtra on March 5, 2014.

There he said, "I feel proud to be here in the brave land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chhatrapati Shaahuji Maharaj and respected Bheem Rao Ambedkar." Rahul Gandhi talked about the growth of Maharashtra and said "Maharashtra is on the top developing states in the country with greater contribution GDP and maximum collection of FDI. You have more industries. Maharashtra develops fast because of its people. They work hard and your leaders are not wasting time on marketing."

"In the last ten years of the rule of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, about 14 crore people could come out of the poverty. We could accomplish this historic achievement with the help of our policies like MNREGA, Food Security Act, loan-waiving scheme and by providing maximum MSP for farmers' crops. At present, there is a new class emerging - just above the BPL line but below the middle class. Our focus now will be to take this new group to the middle class category." he said.

Rahul Gandhi also mentioned that everyone is talking about India becoming super power. But India cannot be a super power until we ensure that the 50% of our population -- the women- is empowered.

    At the rally Rahul Gandhi spoke of the various measures taken by the government to empower people and bring 15 crore people out of poverty in the last decade. He said that the Congress government remains committed to the welfare and progress of the people, and going forward it will work towards providing people the Right to Health and Right to Shelter.

    Rahul Gandhi spoke about the empowerment of women and said that the Congress Party will pass the Bill to introduce 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament when it forms the next government. Linking women to banks and providing them access to credit would be another priority he said because India cannot be a superpower if it did not empower women who form 50 percent of the population. He assured the youth of the state that in the coming months millions of jobs would be created with the building of the dedicated industrial corridors with road and rail connectivity.

    Rahul Gandhi said that like 2004 and 2009, the NDA's "gas balloon" would burst again while informing that the UPA government did remarkably well, as the BJP talked divisive politics. Ahead of every general election, the NDA and BJP come out with a new campaign balloon. They had prepared an 'India Shining' balloon in 2004. But when the ballot boxes were opened, BJP came to know that the poor in our country burst that balloon.

    Normally filmmakers produce series of a successful movie like 'Dhoom'. Similarly BJP made yet another series of India Shining in 2009. But they did not understand that that was already a failed one; but they went ahead with it. Again when the election was over that balloon also was burst. Now, in 2014 also, BJP and NDA are ready with another new big balloon, called Gujarat Model." said Rahul Gandhi


    Ridiculing BJP's Gujarat model of development, he said, "Bihar needs its own model of development and not any other model from outside."There is no problem with this state. What we have to is just to empower its people. I know there are some issues with irrigation here and I assure you that we will definitely find a solution to it when we come back to power." Said Rahul Gandhi.

    Demolishing the myth of prosperity and job creation in Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi dubbed the state's growth model as a 'toffee model' where only a few big industrialists exponentially increase their wealth at the expense of the common man and weaker sections of the society, who continue to languish behind.

    "In Gujarat, a piece of land as big as the urban area of Aurangabad was given to an industrialist by the Gujarat government for one rupee per square meter. In one rupee, you get toffee, not land. This is not Gujarat model, this is a toffee model," he said at a massive public rally in Latur adding that only a few industrialists have prospered under the Narendra Modi led Gujarat government.

    Rahul Gandhi also dismissed claims of job creation and poverty reduction in the state and highlighted that a model which favours only the rich cannot work for India. "The BJP says that the Gujarat model has created jobs for the youth. Recently, Gujarat government opened up 1,500 jobs at a salary of merely Rs. 5,000 per month. 8.5 lakh youth lined up for those jobs. If they gave employment, why are 560 people turning up for one job." he said adding that under this model neither farmers and the poor benefit, nor the small and medium enterprises.

He said when the Congress ushered the IT revolution, the opposition in its short sightedness had claimed that technology would harm the youth, and take away jobs, but when the revolution became a success, the same opposition claimed that they were responsible for bringing computers to India.

    "The BJP has been talking about eradicating corruption, and the progress that Gujarat has seen under its current leadership. But then why are there tainted ministers, who have been in jail still in power in Gujarat and Karnataka? Why is there no RTI commissioner in the state? And why has the BJP opposed the anti-corruption bills in the Parliament?", said Rahul Gandhi.

    He said that the claims made by BJP, about the Gujarat model of development, are questionable. "They talk about Gujarat shining, but that is not true of the poor in Gujarat. Rs.11 defines the poverty line, children are dying of malnutrition, and land has been taken away from farmers. This is the same party that opposed the Right to Food bill in the Parliament because they thought it meant waste of money", said Rahul Gandhi.

    Emphasising on improving connectivity, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the Congress' ambitious plan to connect land-locked Meghalaya through road, rail and air links with the rest of the country.

    Underlying the policies of the UPA, Rahul Gandhi said, "14 crore people have derived benefits from the UPA's NREGA and Right to Food Act. We will transform the lives of 70 crore people to ensure they live a proper life of the middle class." Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, social welfare minister Deborah C Marak, former chief minister Salseng Marak and a host of other Congress leaders were present at the rally, besides Luizinho Faleirio.
