Former South Africa Women allrounder Sunnette Viljoen, who has played one Test and 17 ODIs, created history on Thursday by bagging a silver medal in the women's javelin final of the Rio Olympics.

    Rio Olympics 2016: Expectations high on Sindhu for gold after she bags silver

    After wrestler Sakshi Malik had scripted a new chapter in Indian Olympic history by bagging bronze Silver medal was bagged by PV Sindhu on Friday bringing pride to India. Sindhu had defeated Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the women's singles semifinal 21-19, 21-10. The real test is on Friday today, when Sindhu will be taking on on two-time World Champion and top seed Carolina Marin of Spain in the summit clash tomorrow. An excited Sindhu after her win said, "I hope I would give my best tomorrow as well. First time in Olympics and also playing the final tomorrow, is a very great feeling. Just one more match to go. I'm really very focused.

    भारत की अग्रणी महिला बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी पी.वी. सिंधु ने यहां 31वें ओलम्पिक खेलों मे रजत पदक जीतकर देश को दूसरा पदक दिलाया। उन्हें शुक्रवार को महिला एकल वर्ग के फाइनल में स्पेन की कैरोलिना मारिन ने मात देकर स्वर्ण पदक हासिल किया। सिंधु को रजत पदक से संतोष करना पड़ा। रियोसेंटर पवेलियन-4 में खेले गए मुकाबले में विश्व की सर्वोच्च वरीयता प्राप्त महिला खिलाड़ी ने सिंधु को 19-21, 21-12, 21-15 से मात देकर स्वर्ण पदक हासिल किया। सिंधु का यह पहला ओलम्पिक था और उन्होंने अपने पहले ओलम्पिक में इतिहास रच दिया। वह फाइनल में पहुंचने वाली पहली भारतीय बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी हैं। साथ ही बैडमिंटन में भारत को रजत पदक दिलाने वाली भी पहली खिलाड़ी हैं। इससे पहले लंदन ओलम्पिक 2012 में पांचवीं वरीयता प्राप्त सायना नेहवाल ने देश को बैडमिंटन में पहला पदक दिलाया था। उन्होंने कांस्य पदक अपने नाम किया था। मारिन ने पहला गेम हारने के बाद लगातार दो गेम जीतकर स्वर्ण जीता। सोने की उम्मीद लेकर मैदान पर उतरी सिंधु ने स्पेनिश खिलाड़ी को अच्छी टक्कर दी। मैच के बाद सिंधु ने कहा, "मुझे गर्व है कि मैं ओलम्पिक में रजत पदक जीत सकी। हां, स्वर्ण इससे काफी बेहतर होता, लेकिन मैं अच्छा खेली।" उन्होंने कहा, "शुरुआत में मैंने नहीं सोचा था कि मैं पदक जीत पाऊंगी, लेकिन जब मैं पदक की दौड़ में आई तो मेरा लक्ष्य अच्छा खेलना था, जोकि मैंने किया। मैंने अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ खेल खेला।"

    Entire country has been going through a nail biting excitement, glued to the television sets watching the live telecast of Badminton Finals at the Rio Olympics 2016. Expectations had been high as all were expecting gold. Carolina Marin had put up a tough fight and defeated Sindhu. Keeping the spirit of sportsmanship in the game, win or defeat is normal but Indian are proud of Sindhu who too had maintained a neck to neck competition.
