Global 5G connections to touch 3.2 billion by 2026
A new study has found that the total number of 5G connections will reach 3.2 billion by 2026; rising from 310 million in 2021. To maximise the monetisation of this significant growth in connections, it predicts that operators will accelerate investment into standalone 5G networks to best position their services to manage future capacity. Standalone 5G networks leverage next-generation technologies, such as network orchestration tools, to enable operators to monetise data‑intensive use cases, like remote healthcare and mobile gaming. The new study from Juniper Research says, identified automating network orchestration tools as a key priority for operators in monetising their 5G services. These tools allow operators to adapt network conditions based on AI analysis of traffic; providing more bandwidth to connections that need it, and maintaining service performance. Operators in China, Japan and South Korea have all implemented lower subscription costs, which have accelerated 5G adoption, thus enabling these subscribers to explore novel services that require 5G connectivity. By 2026, the report predicts that the average revenue per 5G smartphone connection will fall to $17 globally, from $29 in 2021; significantly impacting operator revenue. To alleviate this decline, it recommends that operators leverage orchestration tools to retain a network’s highest throughput and lowest latency for connections that require it. By utilising this approach, operators can justify charging a premium to these prioritised connections over other 5G connections, and slow this declining average revenue.

While the vehicle traffic management industry is still recovering from reduced government spending during the pandemic, it is set for solid and structural growth in the next few years, reaching system revenues of US$4.9 billion in 2026, as per the report from ABI Research. Despite congestion levels reaching historical lows during COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, the need for effective urban traffic management ensuring smooth vehicle flow across city intersections is here to stay,” says the report. “However, the traffic management industry is facing transformational challenges in terms of monitoring the increasing complexity of road-based mobility and transport characterized by micro-mobility, autonomous last-mile delivery and freight, the extension into curbside management, and most importantly the expansion into people flow management. A range of new technology solutions are enabling these new traffic management paradigms. These include LiDAR sensors for granular 3D road and smart spaces intelligence; dynamic/mandatory routing algorithms; Artificial Intelligence based edge compute enabling immediate, local, and automated response solutions such as (cooperative) adaptive traffic lights and pedestrian alerts; and V2X and 5G connectivity driving new traffic prioritization services such as premium vehicle preemption for delivery and logistics providers.
The benefits of traffic monitoring, management, and modeling/simulation extend far beyond the primary traffic flow and safety objectives. They include operational efficiencies and support for urban planning, enabling more attractive transit and, ultimately, better sustainability by reducing emissions and air quality improvement. The cumulative global radio access network (RAN) revenues are projected to reach quarter-trillion dollars or about $250 billion between 2020-25, driven by 5G New Radio (NR), according to a report from Dell’Oro Group. While 5G NR revenues have accelerated, the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) revenues are on target. At the same time, Private 5G New Radio revenues will exceed $1 billion by 2025 despite Long Term Evolution dominating the private wireless market presently. Even with the market surprising on the upside, it is believed that there is room for expansion over the near term as the early adopters continue to roll out 5G at an extraordinary pace, resulting in a more upbeat 5-year outlook relative to last forecast. The survey further highlighted that the cumulative 2020-2025 base station shipments remain on track to surpass 30 million while global macro and small cell transceiver shipments will reach 0.8 billion during the forecast period.
