Tech spending in India
The Indian government is investing heavily in digital transformation projects, such as the National Digital Health Mission and the #DigitalIndia program. Technology spending in India is expected to grow by 9.6% in 2023, reaching Rs.3.9 lakh crore (approximately $50 billion).
The outlook for technology spending in India in 2023 is very much positive. The growth is driven by a number of factors, including public sector digital initiatives, investments in telecoms, and growth in the IT-enabled services sector. The report also notes that a number of emerging technologies, such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, IoT, and data analytics, are expected to be major drivers of technology spending in India in the coming years.

IT Spending Predictions for 2021 to Boost Tech Companies Morale
Digital transformation is on a fast-track as IT spending has increased due to Covid-19. Even before the pandemic, most businesses realised the importance of digital and online models and had made decent progress to keep business agile and address larger markets. Pandemic reinforced the importance of technology investments to extend flexibility in different lockdown scenarios including Work from Anywhere. Most IT firms focused around empowering secured digital business did well despite India’s GDP posting negative growth; few companies have also shown a double digit growth for Fiscal year 21.
Forward looking companies did a lot of saving around business travel and office expenses during pandemic most of which was invested around securely extending business apps to all stakeholders, strengthening authentication and end point security, ensuring optimal app performance for Work From Anywhere scenarios and securing endpoint data. Business continuity was another key focus area with investment in hybrid cloud models for bursting in and out of multi-clouds from private and seamlessly managing it remotely. With rapid recovery during the 2nd half of Fy21 and India poised for the fastest GDP growth for Fy22, all hopes are on the growth opportunities for the IT fraternity focused around services and solutions to empower business to power safe, secure and scalable digitisation of business. We expect relevant IT to grow at 2X of GDP which would be around 26% for Fy22.

IT spending in India is expected to grow
IT spending in India is forecasted to total $101.8 billion in 2022, an increase of 7% from 2021, according to the latest forecast by Gartner. The digital transformation trajectory that began as a pandemic response is here to stay for the next few years. India has experienced one of the fastest recoveries despite being one of the worst hit regions in the second wave of the pandemic in early 2021. In 2022, CIOs in India will build on renewed interest in technology from the business to gain funding for new IT projects. Indian CIOs are likely to increase their spending towards projects that drive innovation and modernizing legacy systems. Hiring a workforce that can deliver on these needs will also be a key priority. Next year, Indian CIOs are prioritizing a move away from rigid and monolithic ways of doing business to a more composable business and IT architecture where they will be able to better respond to disruptions.
In 2022, all segments of IT spending in India are expected to grow, with software emerging as the highest growing segment. Spending on software is forecast to total $10.5 billion in 2022, up 14.4% from 2021. While experiencing a slower growth rate than 2021, spending on software in 2022 is forecast to be nearly double of what it was pre-pandemic. As hybrid work adoption increases in the country, there will be an uptick in spending on devices in 2022, reaching $44 billion, an increase of 7.5% from 2021. “The growth in devices is a combination of two components – hybrid work and pent-up demand from 2020 for device upgrades. Spending on devices will make up 43% of total IT spending next year.” Spending on communication services is expected to rise 2.3% to $24.5 billion in 2022 from $24 billion in 2021, while that on data centre systems is forecast to grow 3.4% to $2.8 billion in 2022 from $2.7 billion in 2021, according to Gartner reports.

Work-From-Anywhere Culture, Hybrid and Virtual-First Workplaces is going to Drive Spending on Cloud Security and Integrated Risk Management, with this the End-user spending on security and risk management in India is forecast to total $2.6 billion in 2022, an increase of 9.4% from 2021, as per Gartner. Hybrid or remote working is the new normal in 2022. Some organizations have even shifted to a virtual-first approach following the learnings from 2020. This model of working puts the spotlight on cloud, endpoint and identity security as employees become the ‘branch of one’ for an organization. Gartner research shows that there is a significant shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals. Therefore, end-user organizations in India often engage with security service providers to meet their cybersecurity objectives. As a result, spending on security services is forecast to total $1 billion in 2022, the highest among all segments. This will be followed by spending on network security equipment and infrastructure protection.
COVID-19 was a pivotal moment in the way organizations approached risk or prepared for disruptions. Now, security leaders are putting risk management at the center of their security and business strategies. Cybersecurity will continue to be top priority for Indian CIOs in 2022 and out of the total CIOs in India surveyed, 64% said they will increase their spending on technologies related to cyber and information security in 2022, higher than the global average of 57%. Indian leaders responsible for security and risk management need to adopt an assumed breach mindset because security incidents are inevitable in the current era,” said Gartner. They should prioritize spending on building detection and response capabilities, and not just technologies. This will help them reduce time to detect and time to recover from incidents.
