  • Juice Jacking: Protecting Your Phone and Data from Public Charging Stations !!

    Public phone charging stations can pose a security risk for users due to the potential for malware infections or other security threats. The FBI is warning consumers against using public phone charging stations in order to avoid exposing their devices to malicious software. Public USB stations like the kind found at malls and airports are being used by bad actors to spread malware and monitoring software.


    While public charging stations are attractive to many when devices are running critically low on battery, security experts have for years raised concerns about the risk. Just by plugging your phone into a compromised power strip or charger, your device is now infected, and that compromises all your data. It brings an opportunity for the Bad actors to load malware onto public USB charging stations to maliciously access electronic devices while they are being charged.

    Secondly, The cord you use to charge your phone is also used to send data from your phone to other devices. For instance, when you plug your iPhone into your Mac with the charging cord, you can download photos from your phone to your computer. If a port is compromised, there’s no limit to what information a hacker could take. There have even been reports of infected cables being given away as promotional gifts.

    We are entering into another new age technology for digital exploration through metaverse, a concept that is gaining heavy traction. Assuming widespread adoption, with this people can connect online in enhanced ways, it opens up new attack surfaces for cybercriminals. Now major technology companies are reinventing the challenges associated to secure the metaverse and how cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the metaverse compare to those encountered by current internet users. Facebook plays a large role in connecting people online, but the concept of a metaverse goes far beyond a Facebook group or Facetime call. The metaverse enables companies to create “digital twins” that can use data and algorithms to influence decisions made by executives in real life. The metaverse is defined as a digital world that combines virtual and augmented reality. Individuals will navigate this online world – which can be identical to the real world or based on imagination, or some combination of both – by using digital avatars. Digital avatars and virtual reality headsets give a deeper glimpse into users’ real lives than anything that could have been expressed in social media. The intimate nature of the metaverse and the data it creates will provide ample opportunities for cybercriminals.





    Some of the cybersecurity challenges with this new tech will be similar to what we are already familiar with on the internet. The continued rise of cybercrime has revealed just how lucrative it can be to hack into a company or an individual’s online accounts. However, along with the normal phishing, malware, and hacking we are familiar with, the metaverse will likely bring entirely new cybercrimes because of its infrastructure. The metaverse platform can also be a vulnerable digital ecosystem—where privacy issues, data breaches, and security risks could lurk behind its virtual spaces.     Cryptocurrency projects like Decentraland and The Sandbox already have their digital world up and running. However, the metaverse concept is relatively new, so most of its functionalities are still under development. Companies like Facebook (now Meta), Microsoft, and Nvidia have also started creating their versions of the metaverse. There are numerous ways such risks could be exacerbated in the metaverse. Unwanted contact could become more intrusive. The rise of virtual currencies is another challenge. To make the metaverse experience more immersive, companies are using cutting-edge technologies like blockchain, augmented reality and virtual reality, 3D reconstruction, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of things to power the 3D world.     In a world where the risks to your data lurk everywhere and the stakes to your future have never been higher. Security breaches in healthcare equipment can cost millions of dollars and threaten lives. We hear about insider attacks and humans being compromised to get to sensitive data virtually every day. Machines have the same security issues; if they can access sensitive data and they aren’t being secured properly, that’s an open door for attackers –that can put individuals’ privacy at risk. Attackers don’t target humans to get to data, they just target the data. If machines, especially those in charge of automated processes (think repeatable tasks like bank transfers, scraping web data and moving customer data files) provide the best path to get to the sensitive data, that’s the one the attackers will choose. One of the many ways that life has changed for several of us in the last couple of years is the hybrid work phenomenon. A recent study found vulnerabilities in software used in common medical devices like patient monitors, allowing for remote code execution, denial-of-service attacks, and information leaks. Cyberattacks against medical technology are rising, and criminals are making off with valuable patient data like bandits. It is essential to protect the lifeblood of your business with optical encryption.

    The roots of this are buried in the sudden change of environment that many companies had to provide for. Security policies were written on the assumption that there are premises; people would work in a restricted access area or room. They would have workstations that were company-provided and up to date with easily enforceable security policies. Covid spurred many privacy issues here. Many workers were given a budget and told to avail themselves of a laptop. These will not have the same level of security as one that your employer gives you, or as your office workstation. Likewise, the concept of secure work areas at home is not a realistic one
