രണ്ടിലയില്‍ 1000 വര്‍ഷം...!!!

വെറും രണ്ടിലയും വെച്ച് ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് വര്‍ഷം ജീവിക്കുന്നൊരു ചെടി

നൂറു കണക്കിന് ഇലകളുണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും സത്യത്തില്‍ രണ്ടില മാത്രമേ ഈ ചെടിക്കുള്ളൂ. കുറ്റിച്ചെടി കണക്കെ തറയില്‍ പറ്റിപ്പിടിച്ച് വളരുന്ന ഈ ചെടിക്ക് ആയിരത്തിലധികം വര്‍ഷം ആയുസുണ്ട്. ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ നമീബിയ മരുഭൂമിയില്‍ മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ചെടിയാണ് വെല്‍വിറ്റ്ഷിയ മിരാബിലിസ.ആകെയുള്ള രണ്ട് ഇല പലതായി കീറി പൊളിഞ്ഞ് കിടക്കുന്നതിനാന്‍ ഒരുപാട് ഇലകളുള്ളതായി തോന്നും.ജുറാസിക് കാലത്ത് ഈ ഇനം ചെടികള്‍ ആയിരുന്നു കൂടുതലും. പക്ഷെ ഇന്ന് ഈ ഒരു വര്‍ഗ്ഗം മാത്രമേ ശേഷിക്കുന്ുള്ളു. അതുകൊണ്ട് ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഫോസില്‍ എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.1859-ല്‍ നമീബ് മരുഭൂമിയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഓസ്ട്രിയന്‍ സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ഫ്രൈഡ്റിച്ച് വെല്‍വിറ്റ്ഷാണ് ഈ സസ്യം കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.
ചെടിയുടെ തായ്വേര് 30 മീറ്ററോളം ആഴത്തില്‍ ഉറച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് മണല്‍ക്കാറ്റില്‍ നിന്നും വെല്‍വിറ്റ്ഷിയയെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നു
