The decision to announce a USD 10 million bounty on Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed is primarily due to his key role in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, the US said today, asserting that Washington wants to see him brought to justice. "It (bounty) has everything to do with Mumbai and his brazen flouting of the justice system," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters here. "It (bounty) is because we want to see him brought to justice," she asserted, and referred to the fact that Hafiz Saeed has been charged in India. In an interview with the Associated Press news agency, Punjabi Hafiz Saeed said that such rewards "are usually for those who live in caves and mountains".
Mr Punjabi Saeed travels widely in Pakistan from his base in the city of Lahore.
He now heads the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) group, widely seen as a LeT front.
LeT is blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks in India. The three-day rampage by 10 gunmen in November 2008 left 165 people dead. Nine of the attackers were also killed.
Local media on Wednesday quoted Pakistan interior ministry sources as saying that the government cannot proceed against Mr Saeed without "hard and undeniable evidence that can withstand judicial scrutiny".
He has consistently denied any suggestion that either he or JuD - which he says is a charity - played any role in militant violence.
Pakistan arrested LeT's senior leaders after the Mumbai attacks. But most of them, including Mr Saeed, were later freed on appeal.
As a defiant Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Mohammed Saeed mocked the United States, Washington clarified its offer of $10 million bounty was not for finding him, but for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

Rejecting US demand for the arrest of LeT Chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed and taking strong exception to announcement of $ 10 million head money for him, Pakistan has once asked the United States to respect the country's red lines regarding�:its territorial sovereignty and integrity.
Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar conveyed Pakistan's position to the US Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Nides during delegation level talks on Wednesday. During the meeting Pak-US relations, restoration of NATO supplies, arrest of LeT leaders and Afghanistan came under discussion.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Office spokesman responding to the $10 million bounty on Hafiz Saeed placed by the US, said Pakistan will give priority to solid evidence provided against Hafiz Saeed.
He added that solid evidence was required to initiate legal action against Saeed. The Foreign Office spokesman emphasized that Pakistan was a democratic country with an independent judiciary and evidence against anyone required judicial scrutiny.
�In a democratic country like Pakistan, where judiciary is independent, evidence against anyone must withstand judicial scrutiny,�: the spokesman added in a statement. The reward for Saeed, the founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, was announced by US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman in India on Monday.
