    Cyberattacks on govt agencies

As per CloudSek, India, US, Indonesia, and China accounted for 45% of total #cyberattacks on government agencies worldwide in the second half of 2022 and the number of attacks on government agencies were up 95% year-on-year.

India was the most targeted country in 2022 with attacks on government agencies more than doubled. As India's digital prowess is expected to grow in 2023 driven by 5G technology, startups, semiconductors, electronics and computing, we can expect more disruptive events like it.

In 2022, #hacktivism accounted for 9% of the cyberattacks on the government sector. Hacktivism is a form of cyberattack where the hacker’s motivation is not financial gains but to promote a political agenda or protest against certain policies. Last year, attacks on China also increased due to its aggressive stance towards Taiwan and the Uyghur community.

Attacks on government agencies in China declined to 4.5% of all attacks from 13.10% last year. On the other hand, in India, US, and Indonesia, the share of all attacks grew from 6.3% to 13.7%, 7.4% to 9.6%, and 4.6% to 9.3%, respectively,

In addition to hacktivism, government agencies in India are also increasingly being targeted by phishing campaigns. As per CloudSek, ransomware groups were very active and accounted for 6% of the attacks on governments. LockBIT, which provides ransomware-as-a-service, was the most prominent ransomware operator. Its targets this year include government agencies in the US, Canada, and Italy. In November, a Russian national was arrested in Canada for alleged involvement in LockBIT ransomware campaigns in the US.

Cyberattacks on government agencies are not new. Many of these attacks are state sponsored and are aimed at stealing sensitive information or cripple critical infrastructure of other countries. Indian entities are often targeted by hacker groups with links to China. Similarly, many of the attacks on US agencies often originate from Ru

Cloud is a Growing Target for Cyberattacks

Kids today are digitally wired and interconnected. #Smartphones, video games, consoles, smart TVs, and laptops are part of a staple diet in the daily life of the kid. The number of smartphone-carrying kids is drastically increasing. Computers are a basic necessity at school and homes for projects, research or more. They frequently download apps and play online games. Social networks target them for business purposes.

A Sophos report says, among Infrastructure as a Service users, 56% experienced an increase in the volume of attacks on their organization when compared to the previous year, and 67% were hit by #ransomware. In addition, 59% experienced an increase in complexity of attacks.

For many of these users, a lack of visibility into their infrastructure, unpatched vulnerabilities and resource misconfigurations make them susceptible to various types of attacks, including ransomware. Of those surveyed, only 37% track and detect resource misconfigurations and only 43% routinely scan IaaS resources for software vulnerabilities.

65% of cloud users reported not having visibility of all resources and their configurations, and only 33% said their organization has the resources to continuously detect, investigate and remove threats in their IaaS infrastructure.

“It is imperative that security is prioritized as organizations continue to adopt cloud services. This includes implementing traditional threat-based protections, as well as risk-based mitigations. Unpatched vulnerabilities and misconfigured resources are both preventable mistakes and avoidable risks that make life easier for attackers. Most attackers are not unstoppable criminal masterminds, but rather opportunistic cyber thugs looking for an easy payday,” according to Sophos.

However, the survey also found that more advanced IaaS users are twice as likely to report a decrease in attack impact than beginners, suggesting the appropriate defense mechanisms can go a long w

Cyberattacks crossed 12.67 lakh during Nov 2022

There are rising #cyberattacks and cyber security incidents are a global phenomenon. The government is fully cognisant and aware of various cyber security threats. Apple, Meta, Twitter, and Samsung have all disclosed cybersecurity attacks this year.

The number of cyberattacks in India has recorded a steady growth over the past few years, and the total number as reported to and tracked by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) in the current year stands at 12,67,564 (till November), the Parliament was told.

The corresponding number of such incidents in 2018 was 2,08,456 which increased to 3,94,499 in 2019, to 11,58,208 in 2020 and 14,02,809 in 2021, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

Digital channels are not used just for shopping; consumers have started to learn, work, shop, entertain themselves, connect with others via video chats and even improve their well-being using online fitness and wellness apps. Even traditional in-person business services are shifting online, including medical consultations, education, legal and accountancy services.

The Minister said that with the borderless cyberspace coupled with anonymity, along with the rapid growth of the Internet, the rise in cyber-attacks and cyber security incidents is a global phenomenon and the government is fully cognisant and aware of various cyber security threats.

CERT-In is mandated to track and monitor cyber security incidents in India. In the recently notified cyber security direction, CERT-In has now made it mandatory for all incidents to be mandatorily reported to it.

The minister said that CERT-In operates an automated cyber threat exchange platform for proactively collecting, analysing and sharing tailored alerts with organisations across sectors for proactive threat mitigation actions by them. According to the analysis by CERT-In, the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses

Critical Infrastructure sectors More at Risk of Cyberattacks in 2023

The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre in India, an organisation of the Government of India designated as the National Nodal Agency in respect of Critical Information Infrastructure Protection, has identified the following as ‘Critical Sectors’ – Power & Energy, Banking, Financial Services & Industrance, Telecom, Transport, Government and Strategic & Public Enterprises.

All of these, which provide services that are essential to the day-to-day functioning of society, are hives of the most sensitive and confidential data that threat actors can easily be monetised on the Dark Web, driving further cybercrime and disruption.

Unfortunately, the potential for widespread disruption has not gone unnoticed by cybercriminals. In India, close to seven critical infrastructure attacks have wreaked havoc for those within that industry – from the Oil India Limited ransomware attack in April, and in May on grounded SpiceJet flights, leaving passengers stranded for 4 hours, to Goa’s flood monitoring system in June and banking data breaches reported in August to the more recent cyberattacks on the AIIMS healthcare sector and resulting onslaught on Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, have left authorities understanding the need to prepare for an escalation in cyberattacks in future.

This focus on critical infrastructure is intentional. Cybercriminals are fully aware of the impact that any disruption has on vital services, not just financially but also on public confidence. For example, in utilities, you cannot expect people to be without electricity or water, which means companies are more likely to pay in the event of ransomware.

Hackers are also very observant and will strike during periods of unrest, for example using the ongoing energy crisis as an entry point for phishing or man-in-the-middle attacks.

Another common risk factor among critical infrastructure organizations is that they all have a hig

Cyberattacks - threat to fragile global economy

At a time when the global economy is fragile, we have the necessary tools to reduce at least one of the major threats to the global economy - cyberattacks. Our increasingly connected existence brings with it vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious actors.

Simple endpoint attacks became complex, multi-stage operations. #Ransomwareattacks hit small businesses and huge corporations alike. Crypto-mining attacks gave cyber criminals an easy foothold into company networks.

The report surveyed 270 experts around the world to understand the state of play and establish clear priorities for technology governance.

Despite calls for embedding cybersecurity by design, the low level of confidence in the security of connected devices expressed by experts in this report is a testament to the fact that we still have a long way to go in terms of realising trust in the technology we use.

The report calls for increased consumer education through digital literacy campaigns, standardisation practices of cybersecurity measures, prioritizing security by design and default (as opposed to reacting after the fact) and developing more agile policies to better address the quick-changing landscape of cybersecurity.

There is a state of urgency for protecting against cybercrimes, which would also improve individual security and protect small and medium-sized business, transit systems, and utilities—everything that relies on connected devices.

    Cyberattacks and Disruptive Malwares

#Cybersecurity has become more than a technological concern. Because the cybersecurity professional’s role now touches disciplines throughout a business, everyone with responsibility for cybersecurity requires training that spans IT, cybersecurity frameworks, business and interpersonal skills. The increasing Geo-political conflict triggers an increase in cyberattacks and the rise of ‘disruption and destruction’ malware.

According to Research and Markets, the global big data market is expected to reach Rs 34,943.77 Billion by 2027, expanding at a CAGR of around 12.81 percent making data as an influential factor in business and economies around the world. Out of this, the valuation is expected to reach Rs 558.24 Billion in India by 2027, making it one of the top 10 markets for data and analytics.

The increasing volume of data management and analysis in addition to the advances in technology add reasons to examine why cybersecurity is critical and how to ensure we stay ahead of cyberthreats. The Dell Technologies Global Data Protection Index Report 2022 suggests, 86% of businesses globally, have experienced a cybersecurity incident led disruption in the last 12 months. India is especially vulnerable having faced 18 million cyber-attacks in just the first quarter of 2022.

A report looks back on a tumultuous 2022, which saw cyberattacks reach an all-time high in response to the Russo-Ukrainian war. Education and Research remain the most targeted sector, but attacks on the healthcare sector registered a 74% increase year-on-year. There is increasing Hacktivism - #Ransomware Extortion and Cloud Third Party Threat in the country.

Going forward, there is no doubt we will see an increase in the volume of attacks over the next twelve months. Cloud migration has created a wider attack surface for cybercriminals, and the legitimate tools we all use will be further manipulated by cybercriminals. This has already been demons

It is imperative for leaders and security teams to work towards implementing a strong cyber security posture. #Cyberattackers are continuously evolving to find new and innovative ways to breach organizational defences. Failing to prioritize all aspects of cyber defence, including threat intelligence, will undoubtedly leave organizations vulnerable.

As per Gartner, there is an increasing link to the ability to manage cyber risk; almost one-third of nations will regulate ransomware response within the next three years; and security platform consolidation will help organizations thrive in hostile environments.

“The world around us is in turmoil, whether from economic, social, or geopolitical forces, executives are expecting either substantial or significant industry transformation over the next five years" said an expert. Now is the time for #cybersecurity leaders to evaluate their current strategies and prepare to navigate the future with confidence.”

    3. 60% of organizations will embrace zero trust as a starting point for security by 2025. More than half will fail to realize the benefits.

    4. By 2025, 60% of organizations will use cybersecurity risk as a primary determinant in conducting third-party transactions and business engagements.

Bhumi Pednekar on reaction to Thank You For Coming, OMG 2, lack of gender equality, viewer hypocrisy

Bhumi Pednekar recently appeared in the comedy Thank You For Coming and the film invited some extreme reactions from the viewers. While some praised the film for its bold concept, some shamed it for that. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Bubble host Akash Bhatnagar, Bhumi spoke about the latter group of people and slammed them for the shaming. She expressed her disappointment towards people who didn’t criticise the film but its intent. The actress discussed the prevalent gender bias and how people never took offence when she was a part of such stories told from a male perspective. She pointed out how Pankaj Tripathi and Akshay Kumar starrer OMG 2 was supported by the same people who shamed her film, when somewhere they dealt with the same subject. Bhumi revealed if not getting any support from women within the industry disappointed her. She highlighted the hypocrisy of the situation that people accept objectification of women but have a problem with them talking about their sexuality. You can watch the entire conversation here.
