About 100 Bodies Found in Nepal Trekking Village News Video

Nepali police and local volunteers found the bodies of about 100 trekkers and villagers buried in an avalanche set off by last month's devastating earthquake and were digging through snow and ice for signs of dozens more missing, officials said on Monday.
The bodies were recovered on Saturday and Sunday at the Langtang village, 60 kilometres(40 miles) north of Kathmandu, which is on a trekking route popular with Westerners. The entire village, which includes 55 guesthouses for trekkers, was wiped out by the avalanche, officials said.
"Local volunteers and police personnel are digging through six-feet (deep) snow with shovels looking for more bodies," said
Gautam Rimal, assistant chief district officer in the area where Langtang is located.
The dead include at least 7 foreigners but only two had been identified, he said.
It was not clear how many people were in Langtang at the time of the avalanche but other officials said about 120 more people could be buried under the snow.
"We had not been able to reach the area earlier because of rains and cloudy weather," Uddhav Bhattarai, the district's senior bureaucrat, said by telephone on Sunday.

Climate drives 'New Era' in Arctic Ocean News Video

Changes in the Arctic Ocean are so profound that the region is entering what amounts to "a new era", according to Norwegian scientists.
A switch from a permanent cover of thick ice to a new state where thinner ice vanishes in the summer will have far-reaching implications, they say.
The Norwegian Polar Institute has been mounting an expedition to the Arctic Ocean during the year's coldest months.
Scientists have to brave extreme temperatures and total darkness.
Their aim is to gather data on the condition of the ice as it freezes during the polar winter.
A research vessel, the Lance, has been deployed to an area about 500 miles from the North Pole and allowed to drift with the pack-ice.
The director of the institute, Jan-Gunnar Winther, said that measuring what happens in the winter was vital to improving scenarios for future climate change.
"We have almost no data from the Arctic Ocean in winter - with few exceptions - so this information is very important to be able understand the processes when the ice is freezing in early winter and we'll also stay here when it melts in the summer," he explained.
"A new era has entered, we are going from old ice to young ice, thinner ice and the climate models used today have not captured this new regime or ice situation.
"So knowing how it is today can improve climate models which again improve the projection for global climate change.&

5.6-Magnitude Earthquake in New Zealand, No Damage Reported News Video

A strong 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand's South Island today with local authorities saying it shook buildings but caused no serious damage.
The tremor struck at 2.29 pm (local time) at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), with its epicentre about 30 kilometres north-west of Wanaka, the US Geological Survey said.
New Zealand's official GeoNet monitoring service listed the quake as "severe" and said there were reports of strong shaking from across the lower South Island, but added that it occurred in a sparsely populated region.
"Due to the distance from populated centres, it is not expected to be greatly damaging," it said.
Wanaka-based Otago Daily Times reporter Lucy Ibbotson said her office building shook for about 40 seconds.
"We were panicked, the intensity seemed to build up," she wrote on the newspaper's website.
Wanaka police said the quake caused "a small number of broken windows and no major reported incidents".
New Zealand is on the boundary of two tectonic plates and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year, most so minor they are not noticeable.
But a devastating tremor hit the South Island city of Christchurch in February 2011, killing 185 people.
There have been two other large shakes in the country in recent weeks, including a 5.9-quake at the top of the South Island, neither of which caused any damage or injuries.

Air Arabia Flight Diverted to UAE Military Airbase After Blast Warning News Video

An Air Arabia airliner flying from Kuwait to the United Arab Emirates was diverted to a UAE military airbase on Sunday after a passenger warned the plane was about to explode, the UAE state news agency WAM reported.
The aircraft was boarded after landing at the al Minhad airbase by the authorities who resolved the situation using "appropriate standard procedures", the agency reported, without elaborating.
The UAE-based budget carrier said in a statement that Air Arabia flight G9128 from Kuwait to the UAE emirate of Sharjah was diverted following instructions from air traffic control due to an unruly passenger onboard.
The "flight landed safely and the authorities are currently holding the necessary investigation", the statement said.
Air Arabia is based in Sharjah, one of seven emirates that make up the UAE. The Al Minhad airbase near Dubai is a hub for US-allied forces in the Middle East.

101-Year-Old Man Pulled Alive From Nepal Earthquake Rubble News Video

A 101-year-old man was pulled alive from the rubble of his house in Nepal seven days after it collapsed in a deadly earthquake, police said Sunday.
Funchu Tamang was rescued on Saturday with only minor injuries and airlifted to a district hospital, local police officer Arun Kumar Singh told AFP.
"He was brought to the district hospital in a helicopter. His condition is stable," said Singh in Nuwakot district around 80 kilometres (50 miles) northwest of Kathmandu.
"He has injuries on his left ankle and hand. His family is with him."
Police also rescued three women from under rubble on Sunday in Sindupalchowk, one of the districts worst hit by the quake, although it was not immediately known how long they had been trapped.
One had been buried by a landslide while the other two were under the rubble of a collapsed house.
"They are being taken to hospital for treatment," said Suraj Khadka, an officer with the Armed Police Force in Kathmandu.
Nepal's government had on Saturday ruled out finding more survivors buried in the ruins of Kathmandu.
Multiple teams of rescuers from more than 20 countries have been using sniffer dogs and heat-seeking equipment to find survivors in the rubble of the capital.
But outside the city search and rescue work has largely been carried out by local police and troops.

Flag the Size of 19 Football Pitches Unfurled in This Country News Video

Tunisians have unfurled a national flag the size of 19 football pitches in a bid to set a Guinness world record and promote patriotism in the face of Islamist extremism.
Hundreds of people turned out for the event at Ong Jmel in the southern desert on Saturday, an AFP correspondent reported.
An honour guard of troops saluted the red and white banner as it was unfurled on the sand to the strains of the national anthem.
Organisers said that it took 80 kilometres (50 miles) of fabric to make the 104,544 square metre (1,125,302 square foot) flag which weighed in at 12.6 tonnes.
Spokeswoman Raya Ben Guiza said the project was the brainchild of a local textile manufacturer who had been shocked by a 2012 incident at Manouba arts faculty outside Tunis in which a hardline student tore down the national emblem and replaced it with a black Islamist flag.

Nepal quake- Airport issues BAN on larger Planes News Video

Nepal's only international airport has banned larger aircraft carrying aid from landing because of concerns over its runway.
Planes heavier than 196 tonnes had been allowed to land after last week's earthquake but restrictions have been imposed because of potholes on the runway, officials say.
A government spokesman said the move would not affect aid efforts.
More than 7,000 people died in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
The chief of Nepal's civil aviation authority, Mahendra Singh Rawal, told the BBC that there were no restrictions on medium-sized and smaller aircraft, and that the ban would be lifted after maintenance work to the runway.
Also on Sunday, the United Nations said that the problem of customs controls holding up aid deliveries from the airport was "diminishing".
"The government has taken note of some of the concerns that we've expressed to them and they've addressed those," said Jamie McGoldrick, who is co-ordinating the UN relief effort in Kathmandu.
At least 7,040 people are now known to have been killed in the quake which struck near Kathmandu, Nepalese officials say. More than 14,021 people were injured.
The death toll could go up, as search and rescue efforts continuing in several hill districts including Dhading, Rasuwa and Sindhupalchok, the government has said.
Landslides and poor weather have hampered efforts to deliver aid to isolated districts.

Thousands of Migrants rescued at SEA News Video

Nearly 3,700 migrants were rescued off Libya on Saturday and early on Sunday, the Italian coastguard says.
They were picked up from wooden and inflatable boats in 17 separate operations by Italian and French ships.
The migrants are now being taken to Italy. Rescue operations are continuing, the coastguard said.
At least 1,750 people have died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean, a 20-fold increase on the same period in 2014 when 96 people died.
Many more migrants are expected to make the crossing in the coming weeks as smugglers take advantage of calmer weather.
In a separate incident on Sunday, three people died when a boat carrying migrants to Europe sank off Egypt's coast, according to Egyptian state media. Thirty-one migrants were reportedly rescued.
At an emergency meeting last month to discuss the crisis, European Union leaders said they would triple the funding for rescue operations run by EU border agency Frontex, and threatened to target smugglers' boats with military strikes.
Italy abandoned its Mare Nostrum search-and-rescue mission last year after some EU members - including the UK - said they could not afford to fund it.
The decision was widely criticised in April after more than 800 people died when a single boat sank - the deadliest capsize recorded in the Mediterranean.

Manny Pacquiao blames shoulder injury for loss to Floyd Mayweather News Video

Manny Pacquiao blamed a shoulder injury for his defeat by Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, claiming it stopped him from using his right hand.
American Mayweather, 38, outclassed his Philippine rival at the MGM Grand and was awarded a wide unanimous decision.
Pacquiao, 36, said he thought he did enough to win the fight, despite most observers agreeing with the verdict.
"Three weeks before the fight I got a tear in my right shoulder," he said. "It got better but it wasn't 100%."
Mayweather started the brighter of the two and rocked Pacquiao with a number of right hand counter punches in the early exchanges.
The Filipino came back at the American in the fourth round, stunning Mayweather with a left hand and again in the sixth round but was never able to back it up and Mayweather ran out a comfortable winner on the judges scorecards.
Pacquiao said he wanted to have an injection in the shoulder before the fight but the Nevada Athletic Commission refused.
Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, claimed he informed the Commission of the injury five days ago and defended the decision not to cancel the fight, the most lucrative in boxing history.
"Athletes always fight hurt and we felt the work that was done on the shoulder during training would enable him to use his right hand," said Arum.
Commission chairman Francisco Aguilar said he first knew about the injury two hours before the fight, whe

Floyd Mayweather beats Manny Pacquiao News Video

Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night in Las Vegas, stretching his record to 48-0, in what was considered the highest-grossing bout in history.
Floyd Mayweather Jr., the 38-year-old with the baby face and the unblemished professional boxing record, beat Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night with a unanimous decision in what was considered the highest-grossing bout in history.
In a long-anticipated fight between the two dominant welterweights of the past decade, Mayweather stretched his record to 48-0 while quieting critics who thought he had spent years avoiding a showdown with Pacquiao, a 36-year-old fighter from the Philippines.
All three judges scored the fight in favor of Mayweather. One had the score at 118-110, and the other two had it at 116-112.
The purse, a majority of it from pay-per-view revenue from several million American households paying about $90 each to watch, was estimated to be roughly $300 million. The contract called for Mayweather to receive 60 percent, win or lose.
Inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Hollywood celebrities and famous athletes from scattered parts of the sports world sprinkled the crowd. The few tickets made available to the public were priced from $1,500 for seats in the top rows to $7,500 for a seat on the floor. Tickets were sold on the secondary market for $40,000 or more.
