A Taiwanese court has sentenced a man to death for killing four people and injuring 22 others in a knife attack in the Taipei underground last May.
Cheng Chieh used a long fruit knife to stab fellow passengers during a Metro ride, before others overpowered him.
The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder charges.
The case shocked Taiwan, where violent street crime and mass attacks are rare. Security on the underground system was stepped up following the attack
Announcing the death sentence on Friday, the Taipei court said the crime had been "brutal" Cheng had "shown no remorse".
Prosecutors had ruled out insanity and said Cheng had harboured a desire to kill since childhood.
After slashing passengers, Cheng attempted to flee at the next underground station but was overwhelmed by a group of security officials and commuters.

'Dad is OK, battered, but OK': Harrison Ford's son confirms the actor, 72, is recovering in hospital from a 'serious head wound' after crashing his vintage plane onto an LA golf course
Actor Harrison Ford has been hospitalized after crashing his vintage plane onto a Venice, California golf course when his engine failed Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses say the 72-year-old actor was bleeding profusely from his face when rescuers arrived at the crash scene on Penmar golf course around 2:20pm.
The actor was alert and conscious when firefighters pulled him from the World War II-era plane and onto a stretcher bound for UCLA trauma center. Ford, who has been flying since the 1960s, was the only person in the plane.
Ford's son Ben tweeted around 5pm PT that his father was recovering at the hospital.
'At the hospital. Dad is ok. Battered, but ok! He is every bit the man you would think he is. He is an incredibly strong man,' Ben Ford wrote. 'Thank you all for your thoughts and good vibes for my dad.'
It was initially reported that the actor was in critical condition, but that was later downgraded to fair to moderate condition. Reports say Ford suffered lacerations to his head and possible fractures.
'There was blood all over his face. ... Two very fine doctors were treating him, taking good care of him. I helped put a blanket under his hip,' golf course employee Howard Tabe told

The 72-year-old actor was at the helm of a vintage two-seater fighter plane when a mechanical failure occurred and his aircraft crashed into the Penmar Golf Course.
Mr Ford, best known for his roles as Han Solo in Star Wars and for playing Indiana Jones, reportedly suffered multiples gashes to his head and was left bleeding.
US celebrity website TMZ reported that two doctors who happened to be at the golf course in Venice rushed over to treat the actor who survived the crash.
Emergency personnel soon arrived at the scene and Mr Ford was transported to a nearby hospital.
Witnesses said the Tinseltown icon had to be helped out of the plane but claimed that he was able to use his legs.
At a news conference the LA Fire Department said the pilot, who they would not name, had "suffered some moderate trauma, was breathing, conscious and alert".
They added that he was in a "fair to moderate" condition following the incident which happened around 2:25pm local time.
An earlier post from the LA Fire Department on Twitter claimed the pilot of the plane was in a critical condition - but that was later revised.
They tweeted: "1 small aircraft down on Penmar Golf Course near the Santa Monica airport.
"Solo occupant, an adult male being transported to local hospital in critical condition.
"No other injuries."

US actor Harrison Ford has been injured in a small plane crash in Los Angeles.
The 72-year-old, star of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films, reported engine failure and crash-landed his vintage plane on a Venice golf course.
He was breathing and alert when medics arrived and took him to hospital in a "fair to moderate" condition, a fire department spokesman said.
His son Ben, a chef in Los Angeles, later tweeted from the hospital: "Dad is OK. Battered but OK!
Ford's injuries have not been disclosed but website TMZ, which first reported the story, said he suffered "multiple gashes to his head".
Shortly after take-off from Santa Monica Airport, he said he was having engine failure and was making an "immediate return".
He was the only person on board the plane.
After crash-landing, he was initially treated by two doctors who happened to be at the golf course.
Patrick Butler of the LAFD said they received a 911 emergency call at 14:20 (22:20 GMT) and attended to a "medium-to-high impact" plane crash at the Penmar Golf Course.
The male victim, aged about 70, was outside the plane when the paramedics arrived, and he was conscious and breathing, the fire spokesman said.
The man suffered "moderate trauma" and his condition was "fair to moderate" when he was taken to hospital.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Video links to the documentary, 'India's Daughter', banned in India and telecast by the British Broadcasting Corporation, or BBC, on Wednesday night in the UK and other countries, have been removed from Google's video sharing site, YouTube, a senior government official has said. A legal notice has also been sent to the BBC.
"We got a magistrate's order and so for compliance we wrote to Google and other ISPs. Google has removed it. As and when the police tell us of other sites who are carrying it, we are directing them to remove these," said the government official.
Also, Aloke Verma, the director general of prisons, Tihar, has served a legal notice to BBC for violation of contract - which include using the opportunity to interview a convict for commercial use, showing content that violates the dignity of women and airing the documentary with without his approval.
MHA sources told NDTV that legal notice points to the fact that interview was used for commercial purposes and depicts woman in poor light, violating the conditions imposed when the interview was allowed. Also, Verma is believed to have said in the notice that film was aired without necessary clearances from the prison administration. "Our next course of action will depend on BBC response," a senior MHA official told NDTV.
Earlier on Thursday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said, "We had asked to not release the documentary, but BB

North Korea applauds 'knife attack of justice' on U.S. ambassador
North Korea says an attack on the U.S. ambassador to Seoul, Mark Lippert, reflects "anti-U.S. sentiment" in South Korea.
A man opposed to the joint South Korea-U.S. military drills attacked the American ambassador in Seoul, slashing his face and arms as he was about to give a speech Thursday morning.
North Korea quickly called the stabbing a "knife attack of justice," and said it reflected "anti-U.S. sentiment" in South Korea.
The U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Mark Lippert, was in stable condition after undergoing more than two hours of surgery and 80 stitches to his face. He will likely remain hospitalized for three to four days, Dr. Jung Nam-shik at Yonsei Severance Hospital said.
Police identified the suspect as Kim Ki-Jong, a 55-year-old man with a history of unpredictable behavior.
In 2010, he received a suspended two-year prison sentence for throwing a piece of concrete at a Japanese Ambassador to South Korea, according to the Yonhap news agency.
The motive for his attack Thursday? He wanted to an end to the South Korea-U.S. military drills to better North-South relations, police said. The drills are held annually and are met with harsh criticism from North Korea.
Pyongyang called the attack "just punishment for U.S. warmongers," according to its official news agency, KCNA.

Two German men have been sentenced to three strokes of a cane and nine months in jail in Singapore for vandalism and trespassing.
Andreas Von Knorre and Elton Hinz pleaded guilty to entering a train depot and spraying graffiti on a train.
Singapore has strict laws on vandalism, and has caned and jailed foreigners in the past for the offence.
These include a Swiss national in 2010 and US teenager Michael Fay whose 1994 caning sparked global controversy.
Von Knorre, 22, and Hinz, 21, had flown into Singapore from Australia in November last year and vandalised a train during their stay.
They left the country afterwards and were eventually arrested in Kuala Lumpur in neighbouring Malaysia.
Both men expressed remorse in court, and called their acts "a stupid mistake".
Caning in Singapore involves being struck with a wooden stick on the back of the thigh, which can leave permanent scars.
The maximum penalty for vandalism is a fine of S$2,000 (£958: $1,461) or up to three years in jail, in addition to three to eight strokes of the cane.
In 2010, Swiss software consultant Oliver Fricker was jailed and caned for spray-painting graffiti on a train in Singapore.
American Michael Fay made international headlines when he was sentenced in 1994 for damaging cars and public property. Despite an appeal from US President Bill Clinton, Singapore authorities went ahead with the caning but gave Fay a reduced number o

North Korea says knife attack on US ambassador was "just punishment for US warmongers
South Korea US envoy Lippert 'well' after knife attack
A militant Korean nationalist has slashed the face of the US ambassador to South Korea at a breakfast meeting in Seoul, but the envoy was not seriously hurt.
Mark Lippert, 42, was also cut on his left hand, with blood spattered over the breakfast table.
Security officers subdued the attacker, one pinning him down with a shoe on his neck, until he was arrested.
North Korea has described the attack as "just punishment for US warmongers".
South Korean police, who are in the process of obtaining warrants to search the attacker's home, are seeking to establish whether he has close ties with the North, the BBC's Stephen Evans reports from Seoul.
Mr Lippert had hospital treatment but later wrote in a tweet: "Doing well and in great spirits... Will be back ASAP to advance US-ROK [Republic of Korea] alliance!"
US President Barack Obama called his ambassador to wish him "the very best for a speedy recovery", a US official said.
The US state department said it strongly condemned the incident which South Korean President Park Guen-hye described as an "attack on the South Korea-US alliance".
Witnesses say the attacker, a 55-year-old man with a history of militant Korean nationalistic activism, shouted demands for Nort
