ANV NEWS

    Magic, Realism and After

    Salman Rushdie's 1981 novel, 'Midnight's Children', was phenomenal not only because of its literary inventiveness and fresh style of storytelling but also because of the many ways in which it marked the beginning of what is now known as Indian writing in English. The film takes one through the trajectory of Indian writing in English starting from 'Midnight's Children' and 'The God of Small Things' to the younger crop of authors who are making their presence felt internationally. The Indian novel in English has been significant globally because of the rich tradition of storytelling that it draws from and also because of the way it has appropriated the English language and inflected it with it's own historical and cultural emphases. The film explores several of these trends and concerns through a series of interviews with authors, publishers and people involved in literary festivals.

    How Facebook could ruin your credit score with credit companies spying on social media

    Credit rating companies like FICO are mining social media profiles like Facebook to decide how worthy people are of credit cards and loans, the Chicago Tribune reported.

    This is just the latest in a variety of schemes that big data is using to keep an eye on digital activity and judge customer's financial habits. "If you look at how many times a person says 'wasted' in their (Facebook) profile, it has some value in predicting whether they're going to repay their debt," FICO chief executive Will Lansing told the Financial Times.

    Apple iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus okay, but Apple Pencil and iPad Pro!?

    Fanboys across the world are gushing after Apple debuted its newest iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus at a press event at the Bill Graham Auditorium in downtown San Fran.

    "What we have to show you today is really awesome," Time Cook said. "While they may look familiar, we have changed everything about these new iPhones."

    Unfortunately, the rest of the event probably had Steve Jobs spinning in his grave. Jobs actually came back to life halfway through to kick the living crap out of Cook for doing the things Apple said it would never do. Say hello to the $100 Apple Stylus, sorry "Pencil."

    Apple has always pushed the envelope, but now it looks as if the envelope is pushing back. What do you do when you can't innovate? You imitate. Say hello to the Microsoft Surface Pro, sorry the enormous iPad Pro and its one-of-kind keyboard.

    Bodycam footage shows shootout between Oklahoma cops and mentally ill man armed with pistol

    A deadly police shootout occurred in Sand Springs, Oklahoma last April 11. The shootout involved a SWAT team and a 66-year-old man suffering with paranoid schizophrenia. Officer Brian Barnett had no choice but to shoot Donald Allen, who was armed with a .22-caliber pistol and was becoming increasingly unstable.

    Allen had been involved in numerous troubles with the police in the past. Guns and rifles were confiscated from his home but eventually went back to him due to the involvement of family members. The shootout happened in the morning when terrified neighbors reported that Allen was firing gunshots in his backyard.

    Barnett's bodycam malfunctioned before the shootout but data was eventually retrieved by a data expert. Deputy Police Chief Mike Carter stated that Donald Allen was a victim of mental illness.
