Indian Mobile Phone Brands Making a Comeback: How & Why

India’s smartphone market was valued at $139 billion in 2021 and is set to hit $281 billion by 2028. Chinese smartphone makers have wiped Indian players clean off the market. Xiaomi, RealMe, Oppo dominate the Indian market. The development comes at a time when Chinese smartphone makers dominate the Indian market.

A recent development from the Government has reportedly come up with a plan to tame Chinese smartphone makers who now rule the roost in India. Indian brands are virtually non-existent, with the domestic players holding a total share of 1% in the market despite the policy push by the government. It looks like India is now trying the back door.

    Global Smartphone Production.

#Global_smartphone_production has hit a record low of 250 million units in Q1 2023, it is 19.5% decline from the same period in 2022. Global smartphone production is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. The massive success of companies like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei has led to an ever-increasing demand for new, innovative smartphones. This trend has been fueled by the rise of emerging markets, with millions of consumers gaining access to these devices for the first time.

As the competition in the smartphone market continues to intensify, manufacturers are under immense pressure to constantly innovate and improve their products. In recent years, this has led to a number of breakthroughs in technology such as foldable screens and 5G connectivity, which have become game-changers in the industry.

Airlines in profit | Record Breaking Profits for Airlines: Here's How They Did It |

Given the current markets, rising rates and stubborn inflation, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecast that global airlines will make $9.8 billion in net profit in 2023, up from a December forecast of $4.7 billion. This is despite the fact that the global economy is expected to slow down this year.

Despite economic uncertainties, people are flying to reconnect, explore, and do business. Airports are busier, hotel occupancy is rising, local economies are reviving, and the airline industry has moved into profitability.

Stronger profitability was supported by cargo revenues, China’s reopening and lower jet fuel prices, IATA’s director general Willie Walsh said in a statement. There are a number of factors that are contributing to the expected increase in airline profits. First, the global air travel market is expected to grow by 5.5% in 2023, which would be the fastest pace of growth since 2019.

    Privileged Credentials

The #digitaltransformation of enterprise IT has dramatically increased the challenge of protecting business-critical applications. This transformation has introduced new challenges and complexities when it comes to ensuring the security of these applications. It is true that, the threat from bad actors with compromised privileged credentials is a real and growing threat.

It is true that compromised privileged credentials are a major contributor to data breaches. Privileged credentials refer to accounts that have elevated permissions, such as those of system administrators or database administrators, which provide access to sensitive data and critical systems. When these accounts are compromised, attackers can gain unfettered access to an organization's network, applications, and data, potentially resulting in significant damage.

    Global smartphone market shrinks 17%

Apple reclaimed the top spot in Q4 and achieved its highest quarterly market share ever at 25%, despite facing shrinking demand and manufacturing issues in Zhengzhou.

Samsung finished the quarter second with a 20% market share but was the largest vendor for the full year. Xiaomi retained third place despite its share falling to 11% in Q4, largely due to challenges in India. OPPO and VIVO rounded out the top five, taking 10% and 8% market shares respectively.

Smartphone vendors have struggled in a difficult macroeconomic environment throughout 2022. Q4 marks the worst annual and Q4 performance in a decade,” as per experts.

The channel is highly cautious with taking on new inventory, contributing to low shipments in Q4. Backed by strong promotional incentives from vendors and channels, the holiday sales season helped reduce inventory levels. While low-to-mid-range demand fell fast in previous quarters, high-end demand began to show weakness in Q4. The market’s performance in Q4 2022 stands in stark contrast to Q4 2021, which saw surging demand and easing supply issues.

Vendors will approach 2023 cautiously, prioritizing profitability and protecting market share. Vendors are cutting costs to adapt to the new market reality. Building strong partnerships with the channel will be important for protecting market shares as difficult market conditions for both channel partners and vendors can easily lead to strenuous negotiations.

As per Canalys, flat to marginal growth for the smartphone market in 2023, with conditions expected to remain tough. “Though inflationary pressures will gradually ease, the effects of interest rate hikes, economic slowdowns and an increasingly struggling labour market will limit the market’s potential.

Going forward, this will adversely affect saturated, mid-to-high-end-dominated markets, such as Western Europe and North America. While China’s re-opening will improve domestic consumer and busine

Next fight to be over affordable 5G handsets

While the implementation of #5G in India is picking up speed, the demand for 5G enabled smartphones is going to spike, which could support low and mid-5G frequencies that are presently priced above Rs 15,000. Only 20 percent of smartphones sold in India are 5G enabled and the competition will be in the Rs 10k-15k segment.

India has recently concluded the 5G spectrum auction and the telcos now plan to roll it out in phases. It is being claimed that 5G will bring faster internet speeds with quicker downloads, smoother gaming experience, better video calling and an enhanced HD movie watching experience.

This ultra-fast connectivity - once reserved only for flagship phones - now starts to make its way to mid-range phones, and even budget low-segment devices. It appears that 2022 will be the year of 5G!

At present, even major OEMs are struggling to bring down the pricing of 5G smartphones with ongoing supply chain issues. 5G enabled smartphones are presently priced above Rs 15,000 and only 20 percent of smartphones sold in India are 5G enabled. Therefore, telcos will struggle to onboard subscribers onto their 5G network. Experts predict that 5G smartphone prices will go down during the festive season.

With #5Gnetworks yet to go live in India, phone makers have already started launching 5G phones in India. Most of the latest smartphones launched in India support a bunch of 5G bands and will be ready for super-fast internet speeds when 5G networks go live in the country.

Over the past few quarters, multiple brands including Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Motorola and Poco, among others, have launched their range of 5G smartphones across various price points starting from Rs 12,999.

Airtel has been working alongside global brands such as Nokia and Ericsson, as well as domestic companies like Tata Group, for its 5G network. While Jio has claimed that it’ll be the first network to launch the full-fledged 5G services in Indi

  • Automation to hyper-automation

    Automation to hyper-automation

AI is programmed with logic and rules to mimic human decision making. AI can be used to detect threats such as changes in user behaviour or increased data transfers. Automation is the use of technology to perform tasks with reduced human assistance.

Any industry that encounters repetitive tasks can use automation, but automation is more prevalent in the industries of manufacturing, robotics, and automotives, as well as in the world of technology—in IT systems and business decision software. The most complex level of automation is artificial intelligence automation.

The addition of AI means that machines can “learn” and make decisions based on the past situations they have encountered and analysed. For example, in customer service, virtual assistants can reduce costs while empowering both customers and human agents, creating an optimal customer service experience.

Here we are talking about the next generation of automation, that is Hyper automation. Hyper-automation is a business-driven, disciplined approach that organizations use to rapidly identify, vet and automate as many business and IT processes as possible. Hyper-automation involves a mix of artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotic process automation, integration platform as a service and low-code or no-code tools.

We have seen there has been a great shift from Automation to Hyper-automation. When companies use RPA with IT Automation with AI, the impact is mainly positive. However, there is still a need for integrating different software approaches and applications to get even better results.

Hyper-automation integrates RPA, process mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The automation process, in this case, is even more efficient and in-depth. It can help experts or teams focus on other critical services. It also helps to ensure that experts have enough room to work with and essentially expand their scope. The market for hyper-automation s

The subscription video on demand (SVOD) service revenue in India is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.5% from $1.3 billion in 2021 to $2.7 billion in 2026, driven by solid growth in SVOD subscriptions and an increase in unique SVOD household penetration, as per GlobalData.

India Subscription Video on Demand Forecast (Q4-2021)’ reveals that SVOD subscriptions in the country will increase at a CAGR of 16.2% during 2021-2026, driven by the increasing availability of affordable high-speed mobile internet, and a steady rise in household penetration of fixed broadband services, particularly high-speed fiber-to-the-home/building services, which enable the consumption of high-bandwidth OTT video content.

Moreover, the upcoming roll out of 5G networks will further aid in the growth of SVOD streaming services by facilitating a seamless streaming experience for consumers. The Indian SVOD market is on an accelerated growth path thanks to the availability of high-speed broadband services, growing smartphone penetration, and widespread popularity of OTT content among the younger population.

At the same time, the Global SVOD operators such as Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which have gained immense popularity in India, have been adopting innovative pricing plans with multi-device streaming options to expand their user base, and are investing heavily in developing premium original video content, especially in regional languages.

The result shows the Disney+ Hotstar platform is expected to hold the largest share of India’s #SVODservices market, in terms of subscriptions, through the 2021-2026 period. The growth can be attributed to the company’s wide, distinct pool of multilingual local and original content library, competitive pricing, and exclusive coverage rights to the Indian Premier League, one of the biggest sporting events in the country.

Music retail sales to touch $40bn in 2022

The global retail value of recorded-music sales will register a record year in 2022 with sales set to rise 9.8 per cent, to $41.4 billion (€39.7bn) from $37.7 billion in 2021, as per Omdia. Further growth is forecast over the next few years with the total ending 2026 at $50 billion. It is possible with the change in technology, music companies are becoming more innovative and trying to offer their best to customers. Remember those days when we used audio and video cassettes to listen or watch a movie. Today, with changing technology all these things have been replaced by CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray disks etc. Subscriptions and advertising will be the big growth providers. Spending on subscriptions will jump 17 per cent this year, to $25 billion. By 2026, spending will total $33.6 billion and account for 67.1 per cent of global revenue. Income from digital music advertising will overtake spending on physical formats in 2024 and rise to $6.8 billion in 2026 as per advanced television. The continued shift from ownership of recorded-music to access means global retail sales will break annual records for the next few years and beyond. A report says, in 2020, the total revenue of the recorded music industry amounted to 23.1 billion dollars. Streaming made up 56 percent of this figure, bringing in 11.9 billion dollars globally.

Around the world, record companies are engaging at a very local level to support music cultures and bring on the development of emerging music ecosystems - championing local music and creating the opportunities for it to reach a global audience. According to industry body the IFPI, global recorded music revenues grew by 18.5% to $25.9bn. This compares to 7.4% growth in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic made its first (and hardest) impact on these revenues. Probably most pleasing for music companies is that emerging markets are starting to live up to their billing. Markets previously lost to piracy are really starting to shine. Omdia expects France t

Potential risks of ‘Buy Now Pay Later’

New research by financial advice service OpenMoney finds almost 57% of adults aged 18 to 50 have now used buy now, pay later schemes, up from 49% last year. The largest rise in usage has been among 45 to 50-year-olds, where 16% growth in the last year makes it the age group most likely to choose the payment method, with 58% having done so compared to 56% of those aged 18 to 24 - contradicting the belief that it is largely a tool for youngsters. The survey, among 2,000 UK adults found that the most frequently bought items using BNPL are laptops, phones and other tech items, followed by clothes and holidays. 41% of respondents said they use it because they can’t afford to pay for an item in one go, double the number who feel it makes financial sense to spread the cost. Among 45 to 50-year-olds, those who use BNPL because they can’t afford an item upfront increased by 20% last year. Concerningly, those struggling to pay off their BNPL debts has also risen, from 38% last year to 43% this year and one in three users have turned to friends and family for help with repayments - an increase of 10% on 2020 figures - while seven percent took out a loan and five percent used a credit card to pay back the money.

Buy now pay later services are a form of payment where consumers make purchases and pay them off over a period of time in several installments, often interest-free. While BNPL is typically interest-free, some providers charge high late payment fees. Hayley Millhouse, managing director of OpenMoney, comments: “While from a budgeting perspective, spreading the cost of expensive items could make financial sense, it is worrying to see that two-fifths of users struggle to pay off the resulting debt, with many turning to friends and family or other forms of borrowing to make repayments.” The UK's Financial Conduct Authority will introduce new rules for buy now, pay late

    India –Electronics Hub

It is a very important move in the journey of ‘Make in India’ for electronics. The journey started in 2020 with an aim of attracting large investments in the country that includes manufacturing of electronic components, semiconductors and mobile segments. India’s cabinet has approved a $6.37 billion (Rs 637 crore) plan to boost electronics manufacturing. The policy has set an ambitious target of increasing electronics manufacturing in the country to $400 billion by 2025. The new measures that come at a time when the world is battling the coronavirus epidemic and halting global supply chains is aimed at attracting large investments in the country that includes manufacturing of electronic components, semiconductors and mobile segments. The Scheme shall extend an incentive of 4% to 6% on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India and covered under target segments, to eligible companies, for a period of five subsequent years. The move is likely to give an aggressive push to ensure big companies such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo, besides contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Wistron bring their global supply chains to India and make the country an electronics hub.

With a population nearing 1.4 billion, India has emerged as one of the largest markets for electronics products in the world. While the highest growth is in demand for smartphones, lighting products, security products as well as industrial technologies, there is also significant expansion in markets for medical electronics, defense, and emerging technologies such as 5G, IoT, Industry 4.0, and smart cities. As per a report, the country’s electronics market is forecast to reach $400 billion by 2025. Secondly, there is a huge gap in supply of electronic components such as PCBs, capacitors, resistors, chip components and semiconductor devices. “The recent disruptions in the global supply chain and challenges p

Attackers are approaching with bit-and-piece attacks

Small bit-and-piece DDoS attacks (distributed denial of service) boomed by 233% in the first half of 2021, revealed Nexusguard researchers after gathered data from CSPs, honeypots, botnet scanning and research on traffic moving between attackers and their targets. As the pandemic carried on into 2021, hackers experimented with new attack patterns to avoid signature-based detection. In the first half of 2021, more than 99% of all DDoS attacks were smaller than 10Gbps.These small, nimble attacks can cripple communications service providers and Internet service providers if they leave detection to threshold or signature-based methods alone. Attackers are continuing to diversify their approaches with bit-and-piece attacks to bring down target networks and infrastructures. More than 95% of attacks were smaller than 1Gbps each, and a majority were launched using readily available and inexpensive DDoS-for-hire services. Rather than launching large bandwidth attacks against their targets, researchers noted that perpetrators chose to employ attacks using high packet-rate loads of small-sized traffic from DDoS-for-hire services, with the aim of evading DDoS mitigation detection systems.

The high level of intricacies behind communications service provider networks causes them to generally allow all types of traffic to pass through, which leads to smaller or spoofed types of attacks to strike undetected. Hence, Behavioural detection and mitigation approaches are strongly recommended for targeted networks since they can compare peacetime with battles and take a wider range of factors into consideration than anomalous thresholds or attack signatures. The researchers witnessed several service providers bear the brunt of DDoS attacks, including China Telecom, China Unicom, Vodafone Türkiye, Türk Telekom, Turkcell İletişim Hizmetleri A.S. receiving th

    Advantage of Hyperscale Data Centres

The proliferation of data across our digital world is accelerating at a phenomenal speed, with over 175 zettabytes of data is expected to be generated annually by 2025. South Asia has undergone the most dramatic and rapid revolutions in the cloud and IT industries over the past 1 and half year. Although the sub-continent has suffered and lost much with the spike of Covid-19, it has accelerated the need of digitalization across various industries which impacted not only MNCs, but SME's as well. The future holds for the industry in South Asia will take a deeper look into how these countries are evolving by the massive game change in the data centre aspect. To meet worldwide demand, hyperscale providers have been building data centers and expanding their fleet in the past few years. However, increasing complexities of operating and maintaining these facilities are creating an unprecedented set of challenges which must be met with a new approach.

Industrial organizations in all sectors are producing and using vast amounts of data and are therefore requiring data centers to run their operations. Increasing remote working and virtual collaboration in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic has ensured that the demand for data centers remains strong. Hyperscale providers especially continue to move forward with their expansion plans, and we have seen no negative impact for this market to date. There is, however, an increasing need for remote monitoring and for the ability to manage data centers across a broad regional or even across global geographies.

    e-com growth in India

The e-commerce market in India has been witnessing high growth during the past few years. It continued to grow even during the COVID-19 pandemic as wary consumers preferred online channels for purchases. Against this backdrop, e-commerce sales are forecasted to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.2% between 2021 and 2025, to reach Rs. 8.8 trillion ($120.1bn) in 2025. According to GlobalData, e-commerce payments in India grew by 12.2% in 2020 and is estimated to register a growth of 16.8% to reach Rs 4.5 trillion ($61.5bn) in 2021.The COVID-19 pandemic has fast-tracked consumers’ transition to digital payments in most markets, a trend also seen in India. Rising consumer preference for online shopping, proliferation of e-retailers and emergence of new payment methods will continue to drive e-commerce growth in India.

E-commerce has transformed the way consumers shop in India, supported by increase in Internet and smartphone penetration, rise in digital literacy among consumers and government’s digital push. Over the past one year, despite a decline in consumer spending, economic slowdown and uncertainty caused by COVID-19, e-commerce sales continued to surge. While sectors such as travel and accommodation were affected due to lockdown and travel restrictions, a strong growth was seen in online purchases of retail goods such as grocery, electronics, and healthcare products. Leading e-commerce retailers Flipkart, Amazon and BigBasket have seen an increase in orders each month since the outbreak of the virus. To support non-cash payments, e-commerce companies are offering multiple digital payment options. For instance, in June 2021, Flipkart introduced quick response (QR) code-based payment for pay-on-delivery shipments, enabling consumers to switch from cash on delivery to UPI-enabled digital payment.
