A report finds that recently there has been a sharp increase in the malicious IoT botnet activity due to growing number of #IoTdevices in use. There are billions of IoT devices in use around the world, and this number is only going to increase in the future.
An expert says, there is lax in security of many IoT devices. Many IoT devices are not properly secured, making them easy targets for attackers. IoT botnet attacks can be very profitable for attackers, as they can be used to disrupt businesses, steal data, and launch other malicious activities.
According to the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report 2023, the number of IoT devices (bots) engaged in botnet-driven DDoS attacks rose from around 200,000 a year ago to approximately 1 million devices, generating more than 40% of all DDoS traffic today. This sharp increase in botnet activity has been driven by a number of factors.
The Report found that IoT botnet DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) traffic, originating from a large number of insecure IoT devices with the aim of disrupting telecom network services for millions of users, increased fivefold over the past year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stemming from the growing increase in profit-driven hacking collectives operated by #cybercriminals.

The Personal #DataProtectionBill is sought to empower Indian citizens with rights relating to their data. India, the world’s second-largest internet market, has seen an explosion of personal data in the past decade as hundreds of citizens came online for the first time and started consuming scores of apps. But there has been uncertainty on how much power the individuals, private companies and government agencies have over it.
There was a growing concern from the Indian law enforcement who had long taken issue with the mechanism for getting crime-related information from US tech companies; because Indian requests to the US were so backlogged, many Indian law enforcement agencies saw local data storage requirements as a way to ensure they could get information on crimes.
Recently, the department has come out with a clear policy on imposing regulations targeting social media companies, internet news services, and other firms – including new legislation that requires VPNs to store user data and IP addresses for five years – seeking to increase its control over and surveillance of the online space.
Essentially, Meta, Google and Amazon were some of the companies that had expressed concerns about some of the recommendations by the joint parliamentary committee on the proposed bill. The bill also mandated that companies may only store certain categories of “sensitive” and “critical” data, including financial, health and biometric information in India.

Companies that have embedded sustainable climate-related practices into their organizations see significantly better business performance than those who have not, according to a new study released by Genpact, focused on delivering digital transformation.
The research, Tech for Progress 360: Accelerating climate action with data-led insight, finds that 58% of senior executives who strongly agree that their companies have embedded environmentally sustainable business practices – the sustainability leaders – have better business performance compared to 40% of other respondents.
These leaders are also most likely to say their organizations adopted new technologies over the previous two years (70% vs 45% of other respondents), demonstrating that forward-thinking companies often lead the way on multiple innovation fronts. They understand the necessity of leveraging digital technologies and data across their organizations as well as the importance of putting environmental sustainability practices front and center in their businesses.
For those sustainability leaders, technology plays a critical role in helping them achieve their ambitious goals. Half of the respondents recognize the potential of artificial intelligence and 40% see the potential of advanced analytics to advance their climate-related sustainability goals.

India and Southeast Asia have both grown rapidly in the last decade, thanks to the acceleration of digital adoption and rising consumer incomes. Double-digit growth is forecast for all six countries this year with the Philippines leading the pack at a compounded annual rate of 93%. Last year, India emerged as the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, after the USA and China. Southeast Asia, meanwhile, is on track to become a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030. The upbeat forecast for the region bodes well for countries that are gearing up to use digitalization as the linchpin for their economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. Ransomware payments hit new records in 2021 as cybercriminals increasingly turned to Dark Web “leak sites” where they pressured victims to pay up by threatening to release sensitive data, according to research released from Unit 42 by Palo Alto Networks. The average ransom demand in cases worked by Unit 42 incident responders rose 144% in 2021 to $2.2 million, while the average payment climbed 78% to $541,010, according to the 2022 Unit 42 Ransomware Threat Report. The most affected industries were Professional and Legal Services, Construction, Wholesale and Retail, Healthcare, and Manufacturing. In 2021, ransomware attacks interfered with everyday activities that people all over the world take for granted – everything from buying groceries, purchasing gasoline for cars to calling emergency numbers in the event of an emergency and obtaining medical care. The Conti ransomware group was responsible for the most activity, accounting for more than 1 in 5 of cases worked by Unit 42 consultants in 2021. REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, was No. 2 at 7.1%, followed by Hello Kitty and Phobos (4.8% each). Conti also posted the names of 511 organizations on its Dark Web leak site, the most of any group.
The report describes how the cyber extortion ecosystem grew in 2021, with the emergence of 35 new ransomware gangs.
