Unfortunately, the potential for widespread disruption has not gone unnoticed by cybercriminals. In India, close to seven critical infrastructure attacks have wreaked havoc for those within that industry – from the Oil India Limited ransomware attack in April, and in May on grounded SpiceJet flights, leaving passengers stranded for 4 hours, to Goa’s flood monitoring system in June and banking data breaches reported in August to the more recent cyberattacks on the AIIMS healthcare sector and resulting onslaught on Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, have left authorities understanding the need to prepare for an escalation in cyberattacks in future.
This focus on critical infrastructure is intentional. Cybercriminals are fully aware of the impact that any disruption has on vital services, not just financially but also on public confidence. For example, in utilities, you cannot expect people to be without electricity or water, which means companies are more likely to pay in the event of ransomware.

The unprecedented increase in smartphone exports is a tribute to government-industry partnership under the most trying circumstances. The government led with its vision and trust in the mobile industry. The industry, in turn, has redefined Atmanirbhar Bharat as Make in India for the World. As per the recent report, Mobile phone exports from India will increase by 75 per cent from $3.16 billion in 2020-21 to over $5.5 billion in the current fiscal. After an uncertain start in 2020, owing to multiple Covid waves, the industry stabilised operations in 2021 and has delivered results that exceed expectations. The primary driver of this outstanding performance is the smartphone PLI Scheme launched on April 1, 2020, aimed at shifting GVCs to India and increasing India's share in global exports. The increase in mobile phone exports also marks an important shift in the export basket which is gradually transforming from primary commodities to more value-added, high-end products driven by technology industries. The smartphone PLI saw participation from five global companies -- Samsung, Foxconn Hon Hai, Rising Star, Wistron and Pegatron -- and Indian champions, including Lava, Bhagwati (Micromax), Padget Electronics, UTL Neolyncs and Optiemus Electronics.
The Indian smartphone market witnessed high consumer demand in 2021, making it the best-performing year. This feat came in a year that witnessed supply constraints due to a multitude of reasons – a second and more virulent COVID-19 wave, global component shortages and price hikes due to these shortages. The high replacement demand fuelled by increasing smartphone affordability in the mid and high-price tiers due to promotions and discounts, as well as better financing options, led to an 11% YoY growth in 2021. Growth momentum for the industry is likely to sustain over the near term, this has been supported by uptick in all key verticals such as BFSI, telecom, manufacturing, retail and distribution. Domestic IT services companies are having a good run and their revenue growth is expected to be around 9-12% in FY2022, driven by accelerated and robust demand for digital technologies from enterprises globally; and partly on a low base of last year due to Covid-19 impact. Industry growth though, is expected to moderate marginally to 6-9% in FY2023 partly also on account of the base effect. Carrying forward the momentum from recent quarters, ICRA’s sample of 13 IT companies recorded revenue growth of 17.6% in INR terms and 17.3% in US$ terms in Q2 FY2022.The INR appreciated by ~1.0% vis a vis Euro on a Y-o-Y basis which moderated INR growth to some extent during the quarter. However, with normalization in operational overheads as work-from-office has resumed partially and some pricing pressure on commoditised services, operating margins have seen some moderation in H1 FY2022. Notwithstanding the same, margins are expected to remain healthy between 22-24% over the medium term.
A spokesperson of ICRA says, “In line with the growth trajectory witnessed over recent quarters, Indian IT services companies are expected to report healthy growth over the near term due to favorable factors. This growth has been supported by uptick in all key verticals such as BFSI, telecom, manufacturing, retail and distribution. However, concerns have emanated from elevated attrition levels for the industry due to strong demand for digital technologies and lack of adequate skilled manpower to service the same. Currently 10 digit mobile numbers running will start updating on October 13 as per the digits. This work will be completed by December 31. However, it is not yet decided how the current mobile numbers will change. In the numbers, 3 digits will be added to the front or in the last.
Sources also have pointed out that in this regard, companies that have created mobile handsets have also been instructed to update their software according to the 13-digit mobile number so that consumers do not have trouble.

Instant messaging app WhatsApp Friday told the Supreme Court that it is conducting a trial run of its payment service and will comply with RBI norms on data localisation before launching the full service. A bench of Justices R F Nariman and Vineet Saran was hearing a plea filed by an NGO, Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change (CASC), which has claimed that WhatsApp has not fully complied with RBI's circular which prescribed data localisation norms.
