India’s smartphone shipments drops
Falling demand is causing great concern for the entire smartphone supply chain. While component supplies and cost pressures are easing, a few concerns remain within logistics and production, such as some emerging markets’ tightening import laws and customs procedures delaying shipments. Deep collaboration with channels to monitor the state of inventory and supply will be vital for vendors to identify short-term opportunities while maintaining healthy channel partnerships in the long run.

The global smartphone shipments fell by 17 per cent (year on year) in Q4 2022, with entire 2022 shipments declining by 11 per cent to fewer than 1.2 billion, a new report has shown. Despite shrinking demand and manufacturing issues in China’s Zhengzhou, Apple reclaimed the top spot in Q4 and achieved its highest quarterly market share ever at 25 per cent, as per Canalys.

At the same time, Samsung took the number one spot in the fourth quarter for the first time since Q3 2017, shipping 6.7 million units for a market share of 21 per cent. The second place went to vivo, which shipped 6.4 million units, mainly via offline channels. India was better positioned to weather the global downturn than other markets. But domestic consumer spending cooled in the last few months of 2022.

Even during the festive season, the domestic market suffered a fall in transactions, retail spending and electronic imports. In 2022, consumers already had up-to-date technology that they had bought during the pandemic, thereby delaying further purchases. This led to smartphone brands struggling with inventory management because demand was subdued, say analysts.

The Indian economy started to feel the impact of the global economic slowdown toward the end of 2022. We are entering 2023 with economic indicators suggesting a sluggish performance in the short term.

Central bank wants to ban cryptocurrencies
In India, it is estimated that nearly 15 million investors invest in #cryptocurrencies. India has a large crypto user base, a ban can also lead to users resorting to illegitimate means and black-marketing. The Indian crypto market has been growing at a healthy rate in the past few years and is estimated to reach $241 million by 2030.

Now the Federal Government is also coming out in support of banning digital currencies though it does believe that such a move would be effective only if there is a global consensus around it. The FBI noted that 244 people had already fallen victim to these fake apps.

Finance Minister #NirmalaSitharaman told the Parliament that the #RBI has expressed serious concern over the destabilizing effects of crypto currencies on monetary and fiscal stability of the country and suggested framing legislation to govern the sector. This leaves a bigger question mark on the virtual digital asset in a country that boasts the second largest internet market.

"Cryptocurrencies are by definition borderless and require international collaboration to prevent regulatory arbitrage. Therefore, any legislation for regulation or for banning can be effective only after significant international collaboration on evaluation of the risks and benefits and evolution of common taxonomy and standards," she said. Experts, policy makers and recently Internet and Mobile Association of India, has turned its back on advocating for crypto last week, citing regulatory uncertainty.

Going forward, even if the government wishes to ban cryptos, enforcement will be difficult given the way #blockchain technology works. To enforce a ban, authorities would have to develop a surveillance system that can locate a password or seed phrase. This may potentially end up creating a parallel economy.

5G FWA subscribers to grow
It is estimated that the total #FixedWirelessAccess (FWA) broadband subscriptions is going to climb to around 462 million by 2030 from roughly 75 million in 2021. 5G FWA will drive the bulk of the growth beyond 2025 replacing 4G FWA connections that will be still prevalent in some markets across MEA, developing Asia and Latin America until 2024, as per counterpoint research survey.

Experts say by the end of 2021, only one out of every three households around the world (excluding China) had access to fixed broadband. And only 25% of those households enjoyed speeds greater than 100 Mbps. With the growing work-from-home and hybrid working and learning trends, a stable, fast and high-capacity connection has become imperative.

“In light of that, we are seeing a significant push from operators and even governments to prioritize national broadband initiatives with #5G FWA becoming integral to their 5G rollout strategies. For example, the launch of T-Mobile 5G Home Internet service in the US is going to provide high-speed broadband across the USA trying to bridge gaps and challenge cable monopolies. Similarly, Optus in Australia has been aggressively rolling out FWA services since the beginning of 2021. Furthermore, several MNOs across Europe and the Middle East are seeing rising adoption for 5G FWA”.

Speaking about the 5G FWA momentum and outlook, the expert further reveals that, “The US is currently the single biggest 5G FWA market, with both Verizon and T-Mobile being bullish on 5G FWA with mmWave rollouts ideal for dense urban connectivity, and sub-6GHz spectrum driving broader coverage and above average throughput speeds. European operators, especially in the UK and Spain are still pushing to increase fiber broadband infrastructure, thus delaying the rollout of 5G FWA networks. India’s festive shopping season this year kicked off during the first week of October when online platform giants Amazon and Flipkart announced their marquee Great India Festival and Big Billion Days sales. The season will end on November 4 with the Diwali festival. A report from Counterpoint Research estimates that almost $7.6 billion worth of smartphones will be sold in India during the ongoing festive season. The festive season has been driving smartphone sales in India due to high consumer demand during Dusshera and Diwali. This trend has been accelerated this year by the high pent-up demand backed by aggressive promotions in the mid and premium segments. It is estimated that almost $7.6 billion worth of smartphones will be sold during the ongoing festive season. This highest ever number is coming at a time when the global smartphone industry is facing component shortages. As a result, OEMs have been forced to increase prices, which will have a higher impact on the mass market and budget segments.

Although the growth in market value during the 2021 festive season is expected to be 1% YoY, the retail ASP will grow at 14% YoY. The overall consumer sentiment has been positive going into the festive season. Many consumers have decided to spend from their accumulated savings for something that is more personal. This trend will drive a faster smartphone upgrade during the festive season. Apart from this, the 2021 festive season is seeing higher trade-ins and aggressive EMIs that increase device affordability and help consumers bypass multiple price barriers. This has helped drive the sales of mid-to-high tier (greater than $200) smartphone models and, subsequently, the overall ASP. India is at the cusp of a digital revolution powered by increasing broadband and internet penetration, exponential data uptake, the Government’s focus on digitalisation and increasing trend of technology adoption across industries. 5G networks offer the potential to transform industrial sectors and deliver significant social and economic benefits in India. mmWave spectrum in particular will play a crucial role in enabling the high-speed and ultra-low-latency features required by many 5G applications. India will benefit significantly from mmWave-enabled 5G. Over the period 2025–2040, we estimate that mmWave-enabled 5G will deliver $150 billion in additional GDP for India. The manufacturing sector will see the greatest impact, accounting for about a fifth. The healthcare sector will also benefit greatly from mmWave-enabled 5G, with an impact of approximately $4 billion.

The Indian market faces key challenges that are hindering operators’ capacity to invest in new technologies. While smartphone adoption has soared in the past three years and India is forecast to become the second largest smartphone market in the world by 2025, the market has some of the lowest ARPU levels globally and operators some of the highest levels of debt. 5G will enable new use cases not possible with previous technological standards. One of the factors that will favour us in becoming a 5G manufacturing powerhouse is the backlash towards Chinese telecom gear makers. Nearly all the developed and underdeveloped nations are running away and barring Chinese gear makers in their 5G development. The benefit of backlash is being enjoyed by competitors like Ericsson and Nokia. It would be too early to assume that India is set to become a 5G manufacturing powerhouse. 5G could be the answer to the digital aspirations harboured by the industry and our society.

The usage of this tool is to go through the Israeli govt. route. #Facebook in October, owner of #WhatsApp filed a suit against NSO in US levelling charges that this company has been using this popular messaging service as a platform to conduct cyber espionage. It claims this sort of espionage was conducted on nearly 1,400 journalists, diplomats and human rights activists worldwide.

It’s been used as a political tool, is the claim. Senior officials of over 20 countries allied with the US have reportedly been the targets of the hacking campaign. NSO on the other hand has requested the court to sanction Facebook for $17,000 as legal fees. It challenges the basic premise of the lawsuit stating that it only provides software to governments with the only purpose of fighting terrorism and crime. A subject matter expert says, this seems to be the replay of the FBI and Apple case, though this time both the parties to the case are private business entities. In the interplay of these two legendary companies comes the roles of governments and how data / fact / official work and approval is devised and taken through. Hence, the capability of being able to get, use and manipulate data by hook or by crook is turning out to be the winning combination. The legal battle will always be an afterthought.
