As per Gartner, this marks the largest quarterly shipment decline since Gartner began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s. For the entire year, PC shipments reached 286.2 million units in 2022, a 16.2% decrease from 2021 due to recession fears and increased inflation.
Experts feel since many consumers already have relatively new PCs that were purchased during the pandemic, a lack of affordability is superseding any motivation to buy, causing consumer PC demand to drop to its lowest level in years.
At the same time, the enterprise PC market is also being impacted by a slowing economy and at the same time, the PC demand among enterprises began declining in the third quarter of 2022, but the market has now shifted from softness to deterioration. Enterprise buyers are extending PC lifecycles and delaying purchases, meaning the business market will likely not return to growth until 2024.
While Lenovo maintained 24% market share at the top, the company experienced its steepest decline. Lenovo's shipments fell in all regions except in Japan, declining over 30% in EMEA and Latin America.
HP and Dell also experienced historically steep declines. HP was hit hardest in the EMEA market, where shipments decreased 44 per cent year-over-year. For Dell, weak demand in the large business market impacted shipments in the second half of 2022.
The Asia-Pacific market excluding Japan declined 29.4% year-over-year, mainly due to the market in China. The PC industry experienced very unusual ups and downs over the past 11 years. After the extraordinary growth period between 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the market has clearly begun a downward trend which will continue until the beginning of 2024, say experts of Gartner.

As per Dan Fineman, co-head of equity strategy-Asia Pacific at Credit Suisse, India has a very robust economic cycle and a good structural outlook in an environment where developed markets are heading into a slowdown. A slowdown of the magnitude that we're expecting for the US actually could be pretty good for Asia.
The positive returns for India given upbeat growth in earnings adding that the main risk to the Indian growth story would be if the US recession is deeper than anticipated.
“As per the report, we can probably expect positive returns for India ... as it has good earnings growth, there isn't a strong argument for the market to be derating,” he said. “If the recession in the US is deeper than we’re anticipating, then that would be quite negative for global equities and emerging markets.”
On China, Fineman mentioned that it is still among the best choices for equity markets given cheaper valuations. “Even after the great rally they’ve had in November, the multiples are still at a deep discount relative to the rest of the region and global equities,” he said.
As per J P Morgan, the resultant slowing in aggregate demand could see the U.S. economy shed over one million jobs by mid-2024, which could then see the Fed start easing rates by 50bps per quarter starting in the second quarter of 2024.
Financial conditions are likely to tighten further, consumers are experiencing a significant negative sentiment shock, energy and food supply disruptions have worsened and the outlook for foreign growth has deteriorated. All these factors will likely contribute to the expected downturn.

Cyber espionage is a form of #cyberattack that steals sensitive data or intellectual property to gain an advantage over a competitive company or government entity. The cyber-espionage campaign lasts at least two years. The campaign’s success shows how dangerous software faults can be, even years after they’ve been identified and made public.
As per US Cyber Advisory, there is a very large size of espionage attack by the Chinese government-backed hackers who have broken into a number of major telecom businesses throughout the world by exploiting known software flaws in routers and other popular networking gear.
The Chinese hackers allegedly exploited networking devices from key vendors such as Cisco, Citrix, Zyxel, QNAP, DrayTek, MikroTik, D-Link, and Netgear in the recently disclosed cyber assault.
The US officials said that the hackers utilised the stolen devices to acquire full access to the network traffic of several private companies and government agencies once they had a foothold within their targets. However, the advisory did not list the identities of persons who were impacted by the campaign, nor did it describe the campaign’s impact. But the US authorities did point out the specific networking devices, such as routers and switches, that Chinese hackers are suspected of routinely targeting, exploiting severe and well-known flaws that basically gave the attackers free reign over their targets.

The recent cyberattack has the potential to wipe out the Internet, putting NASA, smart TVs, and Minecraft in standstill. With this, Amazon and Google are now vulnerable to a sophisticated hacking attack, making the 'worst-ever' Internet security flaw 'apocalyptic' for the computer industry. The flaw, which may allow hackers to take control of nearly everything on the Internet, has apparently made IT giants nervous. According to the Seattle Times, employees at Silicon Valley corporations have been working all-nighters to guarantee their code is secure. The Log4Shell, Apache Software Foundation released information on two critical vulnerabilities in its Log4j Java-based library. The vulnerability is based on an open-source logging library used in most applications by enterprises and even government agencies. The exploits for this vulnerability are already being tested by hackers. The problem impacts Log4j 2 versions which is a very common logging library used by applications across the world. Logging lets developers see all the activity of an application. The first vulnerability CVE-2021-44228, also known as Log4Shell or LogJam, was reported as an unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability. By exploiting how the library logs error messages, it could lead to a complete system takeover. Log4j is one of the most widely-used logging libraries in the world. Its adaptable logging capabilities make it useful across any type of infrastructure or application. Countless enterprise, government and open-source applications use Log4j. Tech companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Google all rely on this open-source library, as do enterprise applications from CISCO, Netapp, CloudFare, Amazon and others. Reshoring, Gig Economy & Flexible Working
The #COVID19pandemic has significantly disrupted the typical working habits in 2020 and 2021, and there is much speculation about how things are going to settle down moving forward. In its latest report, ‘TMT Predictions 2022’ from GlobalData offers its view on the future of work. The report reveals that reshoring—when the production of goods is returned to the company’s original country—gig economy regulation, and flexible working will become the new norm. Companies are homeward bound as offshore manufacturing is too costly. Reshoring is an increasingly attractive option. Offshoring is losing its cost advantage due to significant supply chain disruptions and rising labour costs in countries such as China. Companies are also being pressured to localize production to reduce their carbon footprints and support the post-pandemic rebuilding of their home country’s economy. Reshoring will destroy more jobs in developing countries than it will create in developed countries. It also won’t make up for all the jobs initially lost through offshoring because today’s production line is less labour intensive, but it will still make a welcome difference as developed economies shake off the pandemic.
The growth of the gig economy that we saw in 2021 will continue into 2022. However, this growth comes with increasing instability. The gig economy model is precarious and unsustainable due to landmark regulatory changes across Europe, classifying more and more gig workers as employees rather than independent contractors. Governments will continue to legislate in favor of gig workers, and this will heavily increase costs for companies that now need to afford sick days, holidays, and pensions.
