The ambiguities surrounding the digital currency still leave enough space for the analysis of its unreserved acceptance, trust and anticipation, which are the main drivers for the spread of the network. It is time for the Banks to carefully consider the technology underlying these cryptocurrencies as a potential generic new way of transferring ownership of the value over the long term. Especially Bitcoin is the technology adoption in the presence of network externalities. The growth in digital currencies could make cross-border payments more efficient and help address the $1.7 trillion global trade financing gap. These burgeoning currencies may not solve all trade issues, however, and could further complicate the supply and demand of foreign exchange, especially for countries with limited existing international trade. There is no doubt that the digital currencies are growing: the market is valued at more than $2 trillion and involves more than 15,000 varieties. Based on the Atlantic Council’s CBDC tracker, nine countries or currency unions have launched their digital currencies, while 15 are in the pilot phase. Additionally, 16, including India, are in the development stage, and 40 are in the research stage. Seven are inactive and two have cancelled any plans to launch it.
Digital currencies could provide alternative credit information for trade finance and there’s a $1.7 trillion global trade financing gap, which heavily impacts SMEs who typically don’t have established financial records with banks. Public ledgers of digital currencies could be used to share payment and financial history to underwrite loans for import and export. Pegasus spyware has taken the world by a storm. Developed by an Israeli cyber arms firm, NSO group, Pegasus can be secretly installed on mobile phones and other iOS and android devices without even a single user click. It snoops into text messages, tracks calls, passwords, location and even steals sensitive data from apps. Discovered in 2016, the malicious spyware used jailbreak to gain access to an iPhone. The trojan horse has been reported to be sold to the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states including India for surveillance purposes. In July 2021, it was revealed by human rights group Amnesty International that the project Pegasus has been used to tap phones of high profile targets including more than 300 journalists, politicians and media activists in India. This is not the first time such a revelation was made. Such attacks were reported even in 2018-19 when Whatsapp wajed a legal battle in the U.S against NSO alleging NSO had hacked into Whatsapp video calls in several devices.
NSO group claims it sells the technology to authorised governments but little is known if that is the case. Whether the same has been used for criminal and national security investigations alone or to commit corporate espionage or unauthorised surveillance is a pertinent question. If used unauthorizedly, or illegally , it would tantamount to invasion of privacy and a gross violation of human rights. Are we following the rule of law in India? Although many of these safeguards are built into the extant IT Act and rules, the Personal Data Protection bill is yet underway and there is little or no evidence to question invasion of privacy through hacking and/or arbitrary exercise of surveillance powers. Data localization refers to various policy measures that restrict data flows by limiting the physical storage and processing of data within a given jurisdiction’s boundaries. Multiple countries have adopted localization policies to combat multiple concerns over the free flow of data. This is primarily due to the perceived economic benefits of processing Indian consumer data, and difficulties accessing personal data for national security and law enforcement purposes. A vital question, then, is whether any particular variant of data localization would help the Indian government meet its multiple stated objectives for considering such a policy course.
The central bank has banned Mastercard indefinitely from issuing new debit, credit or prepaid cards to customers in the South Asian market, it’s a battle over local data storage rules in the country. All the payment data has to be stored on servers exclusively in India. This way, regulators would have "unfettered supervisory access" to transaction details. Now Visa has become one of the first global financial services companies to have complied with the Reserve Bank of India’s data localisation norms. This will pave the way for the California-based payment gateway company to garner a larger market share in India at a time when its rivals, including Mastercard and American Express, have been barred from taking new users for not complying with the data localisation rules.

There is massive shift in an individual’s online browsing and searching pattern has paved the way for brands looking to invest in search advertising. There has been a steady growth of search as a digital medium across PC and Mobile in India with approximately 25% of digital media spends accounting for search advertising. People have been investing a lot of effort in future-proofing their careers by learning skills that would either help them transition to a new career or progress in the existing one. There has been a 367% increase in searches related to ‘learning online’, while a 103% increase in those related to ‘training’. Increasingly eco-conscious consumers and investors are placing greater importance on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues than ever before. As a result, e-commerce players have begun to make their supply chains greener and the startups are following the trend. As the business operations affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic induced travel restrictions and lockdowns, consumers are now increasingly preferring the online mode to purchase goods and services. Consequently, the Indian e-commerce (online retailing) industry is going to grow at a CAGR of 22% between 2020 and 2024 to be worth US$115.5bn in 2024.

Online Search witness massive growth
The increasing penetration of the internet has led to an increase in queries for content translation to local languages. The past year has been pivotal for digital marketing with digital growth leapfrogging across industries. A report showcases insights on the shift in netizens’ online behaviour and their search preferences from the data analysed between April 2020 and June 2021. In the last few years, digital content consumption has increased manifold. The pandemic has further accelerated digital adoption with people spending significant time on their PC, phones, and tablet screens. With people starting to spend more time indoors and restrictions on movement for the better part of the year, people increasingly opted for online consultations and nutritional guidance. During this period, there was a 125% increase in immunity related searches, while home-fitness related searches like online dance and home gym saw 28x and 14x increase respectively.
There has been a shift in investment preference from physical assets to financial instruments in the past year and an increased preference for using digital channels. Asset management-related searches increased by 13x while those related to digital payments continued to grow at 12%. There is a significant increase in the searches into Hyperlocal, Entertainment, and E-learning. Staying at home also provided a significant boost to e-commerce platforms. As people continue to prefer staying indoors, the focus has shifted from supermarkets to local and online grocery stores, and there has been a spike in the demand for hyperlocal delivery services. With theatres shut, concerts suspended, and people working remotely from their homes, there has been a massive increase in search volume for entertainment and music content. Branded searches in OTT & music shot up as people opted for online content streaming services at home.
