  • Why did India ban import of laptops?

Why did India ban import of laptops?

The government on Thursday restricted the import of laptops, tablets and computers with immediate effect for security reasons and to promote domestic manufacturing. Laptops and tablets account for a fraction of India’s annual import of electronics of more than $60 billion.

The ban of import of Laptops, tablets and computers will add another layer of incentive for local manufacturing to the existing incentives worth $2 billion assured under the Productivity-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. India is targeting annual production worth $300 billion by 2026 and the restrictions on unlimited imports will compel companies like Dell, Acer, Samsung, LG Electronics, Apple, Lenovo and HP to enhance their assembling or manufacturing facilities in India.

  • Worldwide IT spending

    Worldwide IT spending

#WorldwideITspending is projected to reach $4.6 trillion in 2023 according to the latest forecast by Gartner. This represents an increase of 5.5% from the previous year. The projected growth is primarily driven by enterprise software and cloud services, as well as continued investment in IT infrastructure such as servers, storage, and networking equipment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift towards digital transformation and remote work, which is expected to continue to drive IT spending in the coming years. However, there are also concerns about potential supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures that could impact IT spending.

IT spending will remain strong, even as many countries are projected to have near-flat gross domestic product growth and high inflation in 2023. Prioritization will be critical as CIOs look to optimize spend while using digital technology to transform the company’s value proposition, revenue and client interactions.

  • Global PC shipments

    Global PC shipments

As per Gartner, this marks the largest quarterly shipment decline since Gartner began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s. For the entire year, PC shipments reached 286.2 million units in 2022, a 16.2% decrease from 2021 due to recession fears and increased inflation.

Experts feel since many consumers already have relatively new PCs that were purchased during the pandemic, a lack of affordability is superseding any motivation to buy, causing consumer PC demand to drop to its lowest level in years.

At the same time, the enterprise PC market is also being impacted by a slowing economy and at the same time, the PC demand among enterprises began declining in the third quarter of 2022, but the market has now shifted from softness to deterioration. Enterprise buyers are extending PC lifecycles and delaying purchases, meaning the business market will likely not return to growth until 2024.

While Lenovo maintained 24% market share at the top, the company experienced its steepest decline. Lenovo's shipments fell in all regions except in Japan, declining over 30% in EMEA and Latin America.

HP and Dell also experienced historically steep declines. HP was hit hardest in the EMEA market, where shipments decreased 44 per cent year-over-year. For Dell, weak demand in the large business market impacted shipments in the second half of 2022.

The Asia-Pacific market excluding Japan declined 29.4% year-over-year, mainly due to the market in China. The PC industry experienced very unusual ups and downs over the past 11 years. After the extraordinary growth period between 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the market has clearly begun a downward trend which will continue until the beginning of 2024, say experts of Gartner.

    Worldwide PC shipments fall

Most of the other major PC makers experienced business decline, with most in double digit territory. Whereas, Gartner says that, the worldwide PC shipments were down 19.6%, again with comparable losses for competitors, but with another big discrepancy in the Apple number with Gartner finding it falling 15.6% year over year.

As per Canalys, adverse macroeconomic and industry factors including high inflation, rising interest rates and bloated channel inventories have dented the PC market’s momentum, and are likely to persist into 2023. Notebook shipments suffered the most, posting a year-on-year decline of 19% with 54.7 million units shipped. Desktop shipments proved more robust due to less reliance on consumer spending, falling 11% year-on-year for a total of 14.7 million units.

Lenovo maintained pole position in the global PC market but suffered a 16% year-on-year drop to 16.9 million units. For the second quarter in a row, HP underwent the largest decline out of the top five vendors as it posted 12.7 million units, a 28% year-on-year fall.

Both Lenovo and HP shipped their lowest totals since the onset of the pandemic in Q1 2020. Third-placed Dell also posted a significant decline of 21% in shipments, posting just under 12 million units.

Apple enjoyed a better quarter than its competitors as it fulfilled orders from Q2 delayed due to supply disruptions in China and launched new M2 Macbooks. It sealed fourth place with 8.0 million units, a modest year-on-year increase of 2%. Asus rounded out the top five with 5.5 million units, an annual decrease of 8%.

PC sales posted their fastest growth in 20 years during the first quarter of 2021 as consumers and businesses bought new laptops and desktops for remote work and learning. In 2021, PC sales grew about 15%, returning to 2012 levels after nearly a decade of slow or no growth.

Offline smartphones sales reached 2019 levels in 2022

Post-pandemic, the element of convenience is a big factor that influences purchase decisions - 62% of Indian consumers want tech which knows them and can make recommendations, thereby making their day-to-day life easier. These trends cumulatively can offer to be a tailwind opportunity for smartphone retailers in the Indian market.

The ASP of smartphones has increased up to 34% in 2021 vs 2017 while it increased 65% in 2022 Q2 vs 2017 Q1. This positive uptick is an opportunity for both manufacturers and retailers to garner profit in the coming quarters.

    Cloud- the next tech imperative

Tech pundits feel that we have taken vaccination during the pandemic to save from the life threatening COVID-19, like that, the pandemic has provided a poignant reminder of the power of #cloudtechnology.

When COVID-19 hit suddenly and unexpectedly, systems resilience, agility, adaptability, and scalability were the fundamental capabilities needed by governments, businesses, and other organizations to navigate the crisis.

Certain segments needed to scale immediately to meet explosions in demand, like telemedicine, videoconferencing, and eCommerce, while others struggled to right-size their businesses faced with near-overnight elimination of demand, like live events & entertainment, travel, and ridesharing. As the pandemic is getting over, a new technology is getting ready to replace much hyped cloud since the adoption of cloud is an expensive affair.

The advancement in technology and the evolving global economy saw enterprises looking to improve their business efficiency, elasticity, and innovation.

During these 30 months of journey, we have witnessed the growth of all cloud platforms such as #AWS, Azure, #Google, Zoom and others are continuing to invest aggressively in capacity and innovation as they jockey for market share and work to accelerate their clients’ digital transformations. While most cloud platforms will likely see revenues grow, there is a race to land large enterprise IT and data estates due to the long-term challenges and costs associated with migration.

According to an IDC report, the cloud-as-a-service market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 159.7 percent (2019-2024), reaching up to $24.6 billion by 2024. Now the cloud owned companies are suggesting the enterprises to go for deploying more multi-cloud arrangements, with this the IT budgets are increasingly going to cloud giants.

76% of Organizations Admit to Paying Ransomware Criminals with OneThird Still Unable to Recover Data

Businesses are losing the battle when it comes to defending against ransomware attacks, according to the Veeam 2022 Ransomware Trends Report, which found that 72% of organizations had partial or complete attacks on their backup repositories, dramatically impacting the ability to recover data without paying the ransom. Veeam found that 80% of successful attacks targeted known vulnerabilities — reinforcing the importance of patching and upgrading software. Almost all attackers attempted to destroy backup repositories to disable the victim’s ability to recover without paying the ransom. The report reveals the results of an independent research firm that surveyed 1,000 IT leaders whose organizations had been successfully attacked by ransomware at least once during the past 12 months, making it one of the largest reports of its kind. The first of its kind study examines the key learnings from these incidents, their impact on IT environments and the steps taken to implement Modern Data Protection strategies that ensure business continuity moving forward. The research project specifically surveyed four IT personas (CISOs, Security Professionals, Backup Administrators and IT Operations) to understand cyber-preparedness alignment across organizations. Ransomware has democratized data theft and requires a collaborative doubling down from organizations across every industry to maximize their ability to remediate and recover without paying the ransom. Experts say paying cybercriminals to restore data is not a data protection strategy. There is no guarantee of recovering data, the risks of reputational damage and loss of customer confidence are high, and most importantly, this feeds a self-fulfilling prophecy that rewards criminal activity.

The survey further says that, the majority (76%) of cyber-victims paid the ransom to end an attack and recover data. Unfortunately, while 52% paid the ransom and were able to recover data, 24% paid the ransom but were still not able

India to play the key role in developing semiconductors

Chips are like oil, Semiconductors are playing a key role in the advancement of emerging technologies like AI, Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, 5G, robotics and many more new age technologies. PM Modi said India has undertaken wide-ranging reforms to improve the ease of doing business. He said the country has an exceptional semiconductor design talent pool, comprising up to 20% of the world’s chip design engineers. Its own consumption of semiconductors is expected to cross $80 billion by 2026 and $110 billion in 2030. India is going to provide support for companies looking to invest in semiconductor manufacturing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said as the South Asian nations set its sights on becoming a key player in the global supply chain for chips. Even as more firms and countries seek to ensure access to the chips at the core of critical technologies such as 5G and others of the future, the bulk of the world’s chip output is limited to places such as Taiwan and the United States. The Indian semiconductor market, worth $15 billion in 2020, is estimated to reach $63 billion by 2026, the government says. A $10-billion plan to attract semiconductor and display makers has drawn applications from companies such as a joint venture between Indian conglomerate Vedanta and Taiwan’s Foxconn, and Singapore’s IGSS Ventures. As part of the government’s efforts to attract big-ticket investments, the three-day meeting has drawn executives of tech giants Intel, TSMC, and Micron Technology Inc. In the race to become India’s first chip maker, Vedanta is seeking incentives such as 1,000 acres (405 hectares) of free land, as part of its $20-billion foray into semiconductors and displays.

Recently, there was an announcement from ISMC for an investment of Rs. 22,900 crores ($3 billion) in a 65nm Analog Semiconductor Fabrication plant in Karnataka. The ISMC has requested 150 acres of land in Mysuru’s Kochanahalli Industrial area. This will be one of India’s first

The time is not far, where Enterprises Can Go Password Less

While the world struggles to adapt to the pandemic-induced ‘new normal,’ many businesses have chosen to keep their employees’ home for more extended periods. Some companies also adjust their business models and implement hybrid ones in which workers have ease of functioning both in the workplace and remotely. This hybrid workforce has already presented IT teams with numerous challenges, one of which is - password updates and maintenance. Passwords have been a significant source of annoyance for both IT teams and employees, cutting across all business functionalities and departments. And, the only solution to this issue is to go Passwordless with a zero trust policy. In reality, today's IT teams spend an average of six hours a week on password-related problems, up by almost a quarter from the previous year. Furthermore, the difficulty of recalling, resetting, and modifying passwords encourages users to reuse their credentials across accounts, including personal and business logins, placing sensitive data at risk. Although passwords have always been a prime target for malicious actors, the advent of remote work has only exacerbated the problem. Threat actors continue to take advantage of moments in crises like COVID-19, relying on – consumers – not adopting online security best practices, from password stuffing to brute force attacks. So, what can be done to make passwords easier to remember? This is where the concept of passwordless authentication comes into play, especially when companies are shifting to remote working security.

The safest and the easiest way to fight rising phishing scams is to use reliable and robust authentication, such as passwordless – suggest experts. With the transition to remote work security, the end-user has a greater responsibility to observe security best practices. However, businesses cannot rely exclusively on their users to detect and deter account takeover attacks; employee education and training are insufficient. Two-f

Many companies & governments to continue business with Russia increasing sanctions on the country

Amid increasing sanctions and calls for exiting or scaling back businesses in Russia by many global enterprises, some companies and countries have decided to continue their business relations with the country. Russia has drawn up plans to seize the assets of western companies leaving the country as the Kremlin pushes back against sweeping sanctions and the exodus of international businesses since its invasion of Ukraine. The country’s economic ministry said it could take temporary control of departing businesses where foreign ownership exceeds 25%. The cryptocurrency exchanges such as Coinbase and Binance have decided not to ban Russian users from their platforms. As believed by many, cryptocurrency platforms such as these could be used as a way to bypass the sanctions to shield the sanctioned Russian entities against economic and financial isolation. This would undermine the steps taken to make Russia face consequences through non-military means for its invasion of Ukraine. Chinese mobility company, DiDi, after coming under domestic pressure, reversed its previous decision to close down its operations in Russia. In contrast, Nike, Puma, Adidas, Inditex (through its brand, Zara) and Fast Retailing, have all decided to temporarily suspend their operations in Russia. Puma generates about 5% of its total revenue from Russia and Ukraine, while Adidas expects the Russia-Ukraine conflict to put approximately €250 million business at risk. Inditex derives about 8.5% of its global operating profit from Russia.

Another case is the French food company, Danone, which has decided to suspend its investments in the country but to continue manufacturing and distribution activities. The company generates about 6% of its total revenue from Russia. The government of Bangladesh has asserted to continue doing business with Russia, which is building a nuclear power plant (Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant) in the country with financing 90% of the $13 billion project. Social media ads are effective in purchasing an item

A study found that with the rise of social commerce, brands can influence target customers at each crucial point of the conversion funnel. Now more than ever, brand marketers must pay attention to consumer engagement, sentiment, and interaction with brand ads and a brand's competitors' ads. Two-thirds of consumers show purchasing intent signals early in the social commerce funnel with a pre "click" consumer behavior – 65% of consumers reported they engage (like, share, comment) with brand ad campaigns and from those who engage with the ads, a staggering 90% are more likely to make a purchase. Social media ads are also effective in getting consumers to purchase an item they “had been meaning” to purchase, with more than 60% answering they will click to purchase immediately.

While influencers are effective, they are less effective than traditional social media advertisements with just over half of survey respondents (54%) saying they are more likely to make a purchase because of an influencer featured in an ad or sponsored post. These survey results showcase that brands can affect every point in the conversion funnel for potential customers and shouldn’t measure just clicks as an indicator of social advertising effectiveness. Marketers must measure the top and the middle of the funnel, just like measuring the bottom of the funnel and pay attention to consumer engagement, sentiment, and interaction with the ads and the competitors' ads. With the rise of social commerce and fierce direct-to-consumer challenger brand competition, there is a clear need to measure and predict social advertising effectiveness and pay attention to the earliest signs of consumer purchase intent at the pre-click level.

The future of Circular Economy is going to be much brighter

    #cryptocurrency #circulareconomy #FM

    Future of Circular Economy

The circular economy can be compared to our current, predominantly linear one. Today we take something from the ground, make something out of it, and at the end of the life of that material, it gets thrown away. But in the case of a circular economy, you would keep products and materials in use for as long as possible. The key principle of the circular economy is regeneration. “Anything that physically biodegrades has the opportunity to regenerate natural systems, and all that is underpinned by the shift to renewable energy”. Despite massive changes to the way we approach waste and resources, the benefit of a circular economy isn’t just environmental, it’s egalitarian: “You end up with a much more distributed economy, a much more diverse economy, and a much more inclusive economy. It is a model that is based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.

In a circular economy, manufacturers design products to be reusable. For example, electrical devices are designed in such a way that they are easier to repair. Products and raw materials are also reused as much as possible. For example, by recycling plastic into pellets for making new plastic products. In a circular economy we treat our surroundings responsibly. As the world population is growing this is affecting the environment. To ensure there’s enough food, water and prosperity in 2050, there is a need to switch from a linear to a circular economy. That’s why certain countries have developed the Government-wide programme for a Circular Economy. The aim is to ensure healthy and safe living and working conditions, and cause less harm to the environment. For example, waste glass is used to make new glass and waste paper is used to make new paper. To ensure that in the future there are enough raw materials for food, shelter, heating and other nec

    Collaboration - key to innovation

Innovation is indispensable to success. It is the process of converting workable novel ideas into processes, products and systems of value to the organization. New communication and collaboration techniques have rapidly increased. Social networking, Web conferencing and instant messaging have rapidly grown to huge proportions, enabling widespread business collaboration. Expanded communications capabilities have costs in both time and money, but these factors only point to the need for more effective ways of collaborating. Open innovations deliver significant value to organisations through identification and exploitation of complementary capability.

Collaboration brings together colleagues with different views and life experiences, wherever they may be working, to spark new and creative ideas. Through effective knowledge sharing and communication, collaboration efforts can result in innovation at great speeds. In order to drive innovation, departments and project teams will need to collaborate effectively both internally and externally. Technology is continuing to lead the market, from social networking to feature phones, and we’re seeing operators move towards open platforms and operating models optimized for the real-time data surge. From financial services to healthcare to media content delivery, communications is integrally involved at the forefront of the latest innovations. A high proportion, probably the majority — of breakthrough advances being made today in these areas and more are made possible by those in the communications ecosystem.

A tough time for DC Colocation

Colocation and interconnection to cloud, networking, and internet connections have transformed datacenters into the 'nerve center' of the IT infrastructure ecosystem," as per IDC. In 2020 the explosive growth of data will be felt like never before. We believe this is a sign of things to come, as next-generation technologies transform how we store, manage and move data. At the same time we have seen how enterprises tackle data gravity by bringing their applications closer to data sources rather than transporting resources to a central location. Now we are witnessing the power of data localization, increasing data traffic, analytics and management, enterprises need to more effectively control their data and scale digital business. By 2022, 70 percent of data will be created outside the data center or cloud, up from 40 percent today. Going forward, How do we need to build a network to move that around?

Data centers are designed from the ground-up to offer continuous, unmatched uptime and scalability always presents a problem for IT infrastructures. Artificial intelligence plays a starring role in this data tsunami. AI is a hardware-intensive computing technology that will analyze data both near and far. That includes everything from algorithm training at cloud campuses to inference engines running on smartphones. The growing demand for superior uptime, colocation providers have to commit for maintaining the highest levels of security for their clients, which remains as the biggest challenge. Today’s colocation data centers offer comprehensive services that can help organizations keep their costs under control while maintaining maximum flexibility. Today, the extensive options provided by data center as a service (DCaaS) model, will surely make data centers an increasingly attractive option for companies of all sizes. It can also ensure to make data c

In April 2018, #RBI banned banks and other financial institutions from supporting #cryptocurrency transactions, as a result of the news that these digital coins were being used for fraudulent activities. However, in March 2020, the Supreme Court of India slashed down the ban on the grounds of being unconstitutional. According to various reports, Indian citizens are holding around INR 10,000 crore (USD 1.5Bn) in #cryptocurrencies .But as there is no clarity regarding the income tax issue for the gains made via crypto, the need for cryptocurrency regulations is now the new buzz. After giving much thought, the government has now decided to take firm actions. The GOI will soon form a new panel to analyze the possibility of regulating cryptocurrency in India, with the thought of revisiting old views. This new panel will allegedly consider using blockchain technology, new approaches to cryptocurrency as a digital asset instead of currency, and examine ways to operationalize the RBI’s proposal for its 'Digital Rupee'.

‘Official Digital Currency Bill – 2021’ is the proposed crypto regulation that will suspend all private cryptocurrencies and work on laying the foundation for the launch of an “official digital currency” by RBI. This bill was introduced in the Parliament’s Union Budget session, this year. Thinking on the fate of Indian crypto startups: Currently, India has more than 200 blockchain startups. Out of those, many have now been acquired by Binance, a global crypto asset management and trading company, including #Unocoin, #Zebpay, and #WazirX, while leading US-based crypto company #Coinbase has been investing in Indian startups. However, these activities are no longer limited to passive investments.

  • Reimagine your digital future

    Reimagine your digital future

    #digitalfuture

Today, every organization’s workforce is seen as the digital workforce; powered by data, running in a multi-cloud world and ready to take on anything. Today, IT companies are working aggressively to help prepare and create a future digital workforce. The only thing that has changed about our work is where we do it. Build flexible, hybrid and work from home solutions for your organization today, so your employees can seamlessly adapt to a world that’s constantly redefining. With India undergoing a massive digital transformation, and the upcoming 5G connectivity, Indian companies and policymakers need to pay attention to these findings. There is a need to drive improvements in cybersecurity standards in governance, the software supply chain, detection and remediation capabilities, and sharing of information between the public and private sectors.

OT infrastructure is dramatically different from a traditional IT network. While there has been a huge push towards modernization, it's not uncommon to see control systems running outdated operating systems. Windows NT and XP still exist in large numbers in OT networks. This is partly due to systems that may have been in place for 20 years and cannot be readily upgraded due to 24/7 demand or replacement being cost-prohibitive. The problem ends up being control systems that can no longer be patched for vulnerabilities and often cannot run modern security tools already in use on the IT side of the organization. IT and OT security are very different animals, but organizations cannot afford to look at them as separate entities. IT and OT teams must work together to form an overarching security approach that utilizes the right tools for each environment and rolls security information up into a single pane of glass.

  • Growing Importance of Technology in the COVID Era

Growing Importance of Technology in the COVID Era

Across business areas, the largest leap in digitisation is the share of offerings that are digital in nature. Much has changed since the onset of the novel coronavirus. While it has swept through the globe and changed the way we view healthcare and hygiene, it has also transformed the way we perceive technology. We can’t deny the fact that technology can help us live more connectedly. We witness improvements and advancements in the ways in which tech helps us live more convenient lives. However, the COVID era has sped up these advancements and made technology go from a luxury that we could rely on to an essential, non-negotiable part of our day. COVID has made access to technology almost as important as wearing masks.

A survey finds that responses to COVID-19 have speeded the adoption of digital technologies by several years-and many of these changes could be here for the long haul. Another important aspect of technology that has gained wider acknowledgment during COVID is machine learning. All organisations are now using machine learning to make working from home, remote communication, and the implementation of medicine easier and more streamlined. With the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence, researchers are able to predict the spread of COVID based on large masses of data. Lastly, machine learning and data analytics has played a significant role in the treatment and research process of the coronavirus outbreak. Using the massive collective information from across the globe and incorporating AI and data analytics to form trends and gain insight on the virus has sped up the understanding of how the virus spreads, who is most susceptible to falling ill, and how the spread can be prevented.
