Could financial institutions ensure data privacy for customers?

Financial institutions face numerous hurdles in their efforts to ensure data privacy for their customers. These challenges stem from the vast amount of sensitive data they handle, the evolving regulatory landscape, and the ever-present threat of cyberattacks.

Concerns about data privacy are of the utmost importance for lending and credit underwriting businesses in the financial sectors. A compromise of the sensitive data that financial institutions manage for their customers in the course of lending and credit underwriting has serious repercussions.

Data privacy is becoming primary focus due to increased awareness from regulatory bodies, general awareness and cyber-attacks on India institutions. The issues are further aggravated in case public clouds are not used in a secure manner.

Cybersecurity and data privacy- two sides of a coin

#Cyberattacks are growing at an alarming rate around the nation and are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated. Cybercriminals are pursuing multi-vector approache to target enterprises and finding newer and smarter ways to attack and capitalize on the vulnerabilities existing in an enterprise's architecture. Cyberattacks on all businesses are becoming more frequent, targeted, and complex leading to an enormous rise in ransomware, eventually leading to financial distress, customer loss, and a negative brand image.

#Cybersecurity and data privacy are two sides of the coin. Data Privacy is the first liner of defence, whereas, cybersecurity is the second layer of defence. Cybersecurity is about protecting data from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction.

Data Privacy - first line of Defence

It is time for the industry to accept the fact that, #DataPrivacy is first line of Defence and Cyber Security is the second layer of defence.

It is wise to think about it. Data privacy is the first line of defense because it focuses on preventing the collection and use of data in unauthorized ways. Cybersecurity is the second layer of defense because it focuses on protecting data from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction.

    Security – a shared responsibility

Security should no longer be the sole responsibility of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs). Cyber threats and attacks have become more sophisticated and frequent and security has become a critical concern for every organization.

In today's rapidly evolving threat landscape, cyber threats are more sophisticated and widespread than ever before. As a result, it is essential that everyone in an organization be involved in security. This includes employees at all levels, from the CEO to the front-line staff.

Penalise Telcos for the growing spam !!

Spam is a major problem that can have a significant impact on individuals and businesses. Telcos have a responsibility to protect their customers from spam. Experts suggest, it is time to penalize telcos on growing spam. It can be time-consuming and frustrating to deal with, and it can also be a security risk.

  • Regulate Generative AI

    Regulate Generative AI

#GenerativeAI involves using machine learning algorithms to analyze and learn from large amounts of data, and then use that learning to generate new content that is similar in style or structure to the original data.

Generative AI can be used for a wide range of applications, such as creating art, music, or even writing stories. The rapid advance of generative AI tools has drawn the attention of regulators around the world. Political bodies and policy-makers are accelerating efforts to put laws in place controlling the potential risks of AI and making developers accountable for the actions of their systems.

Governments around the world are considering new AI regulations to tackle the potential dangers of next-generation AI tools like #ChatGPT. Many feel that, in order to get time to set safety standards and mitigate potential dangers, tech leaders have recently called for a six-month pause on the development of powerful AI tools like ChatGPT.

Information Security vs. Cyber Security: Explained for Non-Technical Professionals.

#Cybersecurity protects your digital life, Whereas, Information security deals with the protection of data from any form of threat. Information security has become a growing concern due to the .increasing amount of sensitive and confidential information that is being transmitted, stored, and accessed electronically.

The threat of cyber-attacks can come in the form of malware, ransomware, phishing attacks, and other forms of malicious software designed to steal sensitive information or cause damage to computer systems. Cyber-attacks can target individuals, businesses, and governments, and can result in significant financial loss, reputational damage, and even physical harm.

Another concern is the growing use of cloud computing, which involves storing data and running applications on remote servers accessed over the internet. While cloud computing offers many benefits, such as increased flexibility and cost savings, it also raises concerns about data privacy and security. If sensitive data is stored in the cloud, it can be vulnerable to theft or unauthorized access.

AI: The New Frontier in Password cracking !!

#AI can potentially crack passwords in less than a minute, especially if the passwords are weak and easily guessable. With the increasing computing power of modern computers and the advances in machine learning algorithms, AI can perform brute-force attacks and dictionary attacks on passwords with great speed and accuracy.

AI has been able to crack over 65 per cent of passwords in less than an hour and over 81 percent within 30 days. It is a matter of relief that right now #ArtificialIntelligence is able to crack only easy passwords within a minute.

Need to strategize and address the growing | Multi-Cloud Networking Challenges | VARINDIA News Hour

To keep pace with growing user expectations around digital experiences while honouring data privacy and residency regulations, more and more applications are being decomposed and distributed across different cloud platforms. For NetOps and DevOps practitioners, this creates a need for simplifying app-to-app networking across multiple clouds as a foundation for distributing applications. Over 90% of enterprises are embracing a multi-cloud strategy. Simply put, a multi-cloud approach offers significant advantages to organizations seeking to optimize the Three Cs of Cloud: Cost, Capabilities and Compliance. Still, with all the advantages to be gained with a multi-cloud approach, executives should be aware of the downsides. It is time to address multi-cloud networking and distributed cloud services that can seamlessly integrate into your existing infrastructure and provide immediate value-add for existing and new applications to deliver, secure, and interconnect apps in multiple clouds without being an expert in each one by leveraging automation to build app-to-app networking and security policies across multiple clouds. The challenge in multi-cloud adoption is managing complexity, the more cloud environments your organization uses, the more complex the management task becomes. The problem lies in the diversity among cloud vendors. Each public cloud vendor has its own portal, its own APIs, and its own unique processes for managing its environment. Because there is no standardization across public cloud vendors, multiplying vendors means multiplying the management burden.

However, the advantage is from the side of cost control. Multi-cloud is the ability to provide developers and database administrators with a “self-service” experience, that is, the ability to quickly deploy their applications in their cloud environment of choice. Unfortunately, this can

Cyber Attacks Increased by 50% in December 2021 due to Log4J Exploits

Less than a month after the world witnessed one of the most serious vulnerabilities on the internet, with millions of attacks per hour attempting to exploit the Log4J vulnerability, 2021 has been a record-breaking year in terms of cyber-security. Overall, in 2021, researchers have seen 50% more attacks per week on corporate networks compared to 2020. India has witnessed 1803 Weekly average attacks per Organization in 2021 and there has been 24% change from year 2020. Log4Shell is a critical vulnerability that has the potential to be one of the most impactful organizations have ever seen. Governmental advisories have been issued and organizations are scrambling not just to patch but to try to understand where they might be vulnerable. Check Point Research saw hackers targeted Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America the most, but Europe saw the highest percent increase in cyberattacks year over year. Education/Research placed first for the most targeted industry sector worldwide. The trend of increasing cyberattacks reached an all-time high at the end of 2021 after revelations of the Log4J exploit, peaking to 925 cyberattacks a week per organization, globally.

Most Targeted Sectors Worldwide by Hackers in 2021 are

    1. Education/Research (+75%)

    2. Government/Military (+47%)

    3. Communications (+51%)

    4. ISP/MSP (67%)

    5. Healthcare (71%)

Hackers keep innovating. Last year, we saw a staggering 50% more cyberattacks per week on corporate networks compared to 2020 – that’s a significant increase. The cyberattack numbers peak towards the end of the year, largely due to the Log4J vulnerability exploit attempts. New penetration techniques and evasion methods have made it much easier for hackers to execute malicious intentions. What’s most alarming is that we’re seeing some pivotal societal industries surge into the most attacked list. Education, government and healthcare industries made it into the top

Hopes are e-Rupi to boost India’s fintech sector

    #eRupi #digitalpayment #digitaleconomy

With the newly launched e-Rupi #digitalpayments platform, India has now taken its first step towards having its own digital currency. India’s consumer #digitaleconomy, which was pegged at $85-90 billion in calendar year 2020, is expected to become a $800 billion market by 2030. Today, over 90 per cent of the orders fulfilled by online commerce get done by the new age logistics, an industry which has come up only in the last one decade and has solved the challenges through technology and customer centric mindset. Digital payments are becoming quite ubiquitous in India. The government has now come up with a plan for leveraging the digital infrastructure so that there is ‘leak-proof delivery’ of its welfare schemes. Now e-Rupi can be comparable to a prepaid voucher that is redeemable at specific centres. What is even more special about it, is that one does not need any credit or debit card, mobile app or internet banking to use it.

Developed by #NPCI in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Health and Welfare and National Health Authority, e-Rupi seeks to connect beneficiaries and service providers digitally, making it a personal purpose-specific payments platform. The Indian economy has always been largely cash-dependent, while the government has been making efforts to digitise the economy, still much remains to be done. With this new platform, the government hopes to encourage as well as accelerate the adoption of digital payments and bring down the cash to GDP ratio. With more and more people overcoming their wariness about digital transactions, fintech, in turn, will be able to reach out to more consumers who had earlier been left out by the formal economy and financial services sector, especially in rural India. Going forward, the biggest advantages which we can foresee of e-Rupi is the penetration of digital transactions, which of course has been a fintech focus as well.

Various Governments eyeing on data privacy

From sensors to supercomputers, the convergence of 5G, IoT, and AI is driving multiple industries to transform. We see this transformation in retail, automotive, factories, homes, and our cities. At the same time, cyber threats are getting more sophisticated and intense amid the increasing levels of remote work and dependence on digital devices. Organizations across all industries are facing devastating threats to their day-to-day operations from opportunistic cyber criminals and nation-state actors. They have mastered ransomware deployment and evolved their tactics to multifaceted extortion—some resulting in million-dollar payouts, damaged reputation, and ongoing loss of operational capacity. To prevail against these threat actors, security teams must understand attacker motivations and behaviors and discover how to further improve detection, prevention, and response capabilities. According to Verizon, web applications were involved in 43% of the breaches and as much as 80% of organizations experienced a cybersecurity breach originating from a vulnerability in their third party software.

As data becomes an increasingly powerful currency, governments around the globe are taking steps to regulate how that data is collected, used and stored. As per Forrester Research , the uptick in data privacy regulations has only encouraged CIOs to double down on baking privacy and security into their overall IT strategies. China recently enacted a new personal data privacy law taking effect Nov. 1 that will require CIOs operating in that market to ensure their IT strategies meet the new requirements. A lot more attention is being paid to cybersecurity because of the various breaches that have happened over the last few years. There's much more boardroom pressure to make sure all those angles are covered. There are five prominent sectors identified as most vulnerable and they are

Data Uberization will lead to growth of SaaS market

    #SaaSmarket #PM #Ujjwala

Data Uberization helps SaaS market growth

The SaaS market is reaching a higher revenue size than both IaaS and PaaS combined—at least for the time being. Ultimately, though SaaS might begin to slow this year, geo-economics may reverse that slowdown. By 2022, SaaS is expected to generate double the revenue of PaaS and significantly more than IaaS. We realize, however, that a significant portion of their revenue comes from selling on-premise software—so while they’re huge tech companies, calling them SaaS providers is a misnomer. This demand for subscription-based pricing models, however, is spurring legacy companies to rapidly migrate their software solutions to a SaaS consumption model. A report says, the coming three years is going to witness a huge pile of data ,which we might have seen in the last 30 years. We are going to witness several new companies to enter into the segment of Artificial Intelligence and SaaS based solutions. By 2021, 73% of organizations will be using all or mostly SaaS solutions.

Nearly 85% of small companies have already invested in SaaS options. This means there is strong potential for growth of SaaS products in the coming years as their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) matches that of the on-premise software deployment models. Organizations dominating the enterprise software space—IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, and SAP—will likely maintain their market share for enterprise software products, as a growing number of customers can take advantage of the same product capabilities with the feasible subscription-based pricing model. However, the industry is still riddled with a lot of challenges in terms of talent and which is why organisations have started pouring a substantial amount of money in building their data science and analytics team. Organisations regardless of their positions have been using data science and analytics to garner insights from data.
