Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing a Congress rally in Mangalore in Karnataka, asked the ruling BJP government in Karnataka what have it done for the welfare of the people. She also slammed the BJP by saying that it never took any serious action to fight corruption.
“As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours†said Sonia Gandhi.

Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi attended the convocation of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and laid foundation stone of its new building at her Parliament constituency, Raebareli. Five and half years back I was privileged to start the NIFT centre at Raebareli at its temporary premises and today I am delighted to have laid the foundation stone for its permanent centre and also addressing this convocation†said Sonia Gandhi. NIFT was conceived of during Rajiv Ji tenure as Prime Minister and I can still recall the personal interest that he took in giving it a concrete shape. Over the past two decades the NIFT has established itself both in our country and abroad as an outstanding institution that has produced hundreds of young men and women who have brought new design and production skill to their diverse set of industries particularly in the textile area. In a bid to plug loopholes in the implementation of welfare schemes, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi launched the nationwide Aadhaar Enabled Service Delivery from Dudu in Rajasthan, marking the second anniversary of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). While addressing the function, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said the Aadhaar scheme gives identity to the common man and is a tool to claim benefits.
Explaining that the Aadhaar scheme is an extension of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s long term vision, Sonia Gandhi said, “Rajiv Gandhi had a dream that the benefits of the modern technology should reach the common man. It was because of this long term vision only our country witnessed a revolution in technology especially in the telecom sector. The aam aadmi in our country have now been reaping benefits of the mobile phones, because of the policies of Rajiv Gandhi and taking inspiration from him only we have the Aadhaar policy todayâ€.
