Japan earthquake Japan's new tsunami terror: Massive 7.3 earthquake strikes off coast

A powerful earthquake rocked Japan today, sparking a tsunami warning in the same region that was devastated by huge waves last year.

The quake, in the north eastern Miyagi region, was 7.3 in magnitude and tremors were felt nearly 200 miles away in Tokyo, where buildings shook violently for several minutes, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

Power supplies were hit, trains were halted and an airport runway shut.

A 3ft tsunami struck the town of Ishinomaki, but there were no casualties.

Resident Chikako Iwai said: “I was in the centre of the city.

"I immediately jumped into the car and started escaping towards the mountains. I’m still hiding inside the car."
When a tsunami hit the region in March 2011, nearly 19,000 people were killed or listed missing.

It was 9.0 in magnitude and it battered the Fukushima plant in the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

As the latest quake struck, the NHK TV network urged: “Remember last year. Call on your neighbours and flee to higher ground now. Do not go back.”

A tsunami warning from Honshu to Tokyo was cancelled, with only two people hurt.

There were three aftershocks of 6.2, 5.5 and 4.7 magnitude.

English teacher John Heritage told the BBC: "We're at an evacuation centre waiting to hear what to do next."

Japan military expansion: US and Japan revise Japan's defense doctrine in face of rising China

The US and Japan agreed upon new guidelines for defense cooperation in New York on Monday that will fundamentally change how Japan's military operates worldwide.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Japanese counterpart Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida agreed on revisions that will expand the role of Japanese forces by broadening the range of military situations that they can be deployed.

While Japan's current military strategy is defensive in nature and limited to deploying forces only if Japan is directly attacked, the revisions will allow Japan to come to the aid of other countries if it is deemed in Japan's interest.

Under the new guidelines, Japan can help defend U.S. ships in its surrounding waters and Japan's missile defense system could be used to intercept any weapons launched at the United States, even if Japan itself is not under attack.

The new guidelines will streamline information and weapons sharing, and allow for Japan and the U.S. to engage in joint surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
The U.S. will deploy U.S. Navy P-8 surveillance planes as well as Air Force Global Hawk drones to Japan this year. The U.S. also plans to replace the Japan-based carrier, USS George Washington, with the more advanced USS Ronald Reagan.

China's rising military capabilities and North Korea's instability have long raised concerns in Japan. During the meeting

  • Strong 6.8 earthquake hits Japan, tsunami warning issued 14 March 2012

Strong 6.8 earthquake hits Japan, tsunami warning issued 14 March 2012

A strong earthquake shook northern Japan on Wednesday evening, causing small tidal changes on its Pacific coastline but no damage or injury was reported.

Several towns issued evacuation orders or advisories to residents nearest the coast. A swelling of 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed in the port of Hachinohe in Aomori, northern Japan, about one hour after the quake struck the region. Smaller changes were also reported in several locations on Hokkaido island and Aomori prefecture.

The agency lifted all tsunami advisories about an hour and half later.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the tremor was 6.8 magnitude. An aftershock of magnitude 5.9 struck followed about two hours later.

The town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, where more than 800 died in last year's tsunami, issued an evacuation order to all households along the coast as a precaution, said prefectural disaster management official Shinichi Motoyama. No damage or injury was reported from the quake so far, he said.

Iwate was heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of aftershocks have shaken the region since then, nearly all of them of minor or moderate strength.

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 left some 19,000 people dead or missing.

Japan marked the first anniversary of the disasters on Sunday, as the country still struggles to rebuild.

TSUNAMI Hits Japan After Huge 6.8 - 7.4 EarthQuakes - Nuclear Reactors Shutdown 14-03-2012

tsunami hit Japan's northeastern coastline Wednesday, NHK television reported, after a strong earthquake rocked the region nearly a year on from Japan's worst post-war natural disaster.

The 10-centimetre (four inch) wave and 6.8 magnitude quake, which struck some 210 kilometres (130 miles) off the northern island of Hokkaido, prompted local authorities to issue an evacuation warning for coastal residents.

Japan's meteorological agency had initially said the tsunami could be as high as 50 centimetres, but US monitors said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat.

The warning comes after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a monster tsunami on March 11 last year that killed more than 19,000 people and crippled Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, sparking the world's worst atomic accident in a generation.

There were no reports of damage at nuclear facilities in the area affected by Wednesday's 6.8 quake, the Kyodo news agency said.

The meteorological agency also warned the tsunami could reach the Kuril islands, off Hokkaido, which Russia has controlled since Japan's surrender at the end of World War II.

On Sunday, Japan fell silent to remember last year's tragedy with tearful families gathering in towns and villages across the country's shattered northeast to remember those they lost as the towering waves smashed ashore.

Japan has been put on tsunami alert after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. The quake, registered as a major one on the Richter scale, struck off the country's far south-west coast just before 6am local time.

It hit at a depth of about six miles, around 100 miles south west of the town of Makurazaki, says Japan's Meteorological Agency. The affected area is 860 miles away from the capital Tokyo.

Now the country faces the terrifying wait for the aftermath of the quake. JMA said waves of up to one metre (3ft) could hit the western coast of Kagoshima prefecture and Satsunan islands. "Get out of the water and leave the coast immediately," the JMA's warning said. "As the strong current will continue, do not get in the sea or approach coasts until the advisory is cleared," it added.

    Delhi में भयंकर स्थिति में पहुंचा Corona, क्या जुर्माने से सुधर जायेंगे हालात

Coronavirus lockdown in Delhi? In yet another appeal to the traders in the National Capital, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that the government is not planning on another corona lockdown. After meeting the representatives of the market associations, Kejriwal said that no shopkeeper in Delhi should be afraid of any new rule or rumours about lockdown. In a bid to allay the fear over the new regulation regarding the mask fine, Kejriwal said that shopkeepers should keep spare face covers to avoid the Rs 2,000 penalty. This is third such instance where the Delhi government has reached out to the community over lockdown rumours.
The market associations have assured the Delhi government that free masks will be provided to the traders. Shopkeepers are being encouraged to keep spare masks and hand sanitisers at their stores. Kejriwal once again said that he didn’t ‘wish to shut’ any market in the national capital. Since Diwali, there have been several reports that suggested that the Delhi government was planning to shut down markets due to sharp rise in the coronavirus cases. Several markets have been designated as new corona hotspots.

One dosing regimen shows the vaccine efficacy of 90 per cent when AZD1222 was given as a half dose, followed by a full dose at least a month apart. Second dosing regimen shows 62 per cent efficacy when given two full doses at least a month apart. Combined analysis has an average efficacy of 70 per cent, AstraZeneca said in a statement.
Professor Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial at Oxford, said: “These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives. Excitingly, we have found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90 per cent effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply. Today’s announcement is only possible thanks to the many volunteers in our trial, and the hard-working and talented team of researchers based around the world.”
