Google Doodle - First Drive-in Theater

    Google Doodle - Drive-in theater.

Richard Hollingshead was a young sales manager at his dad's Whiz Auto Products, who had a hankering to invent something that combined his two interests: cars and movies.

Richard Hollingshead's vision was an open-air movie theater where moviegoers could watch from their own cars. He experimented in his own driveway at 212 Thomas Avenue, Camden, New Jersey. The inventor mounted a 1928 Kodak projector on the hood of his car, projected onto a screen he had nailed to trees in his backyard, and used a radio placed behind the screen for sound.

The inventor subjected his beta drive-in to vigorous testing: for sound quality, for different weather conditions (Richard used a lawn sprinkler to imitate rain) and for figuring out how to park the patrons' cars. Richard tried lining up the cars in his driveway, which created a problem with line of sight if one car was directly parked behind another car. By spacing cars at various distances and placing blocks and ramps under the front wheels of cars that were further away from the screen, Richard Hollingshead created the perfect parking arrangement for the drive-in movie theater experience.

The first patent for the Drive-In Theater (United States Patent# 1,909,537) was issued on May 16, 1933. With an investment of $30,000, Richard opened the first drive-in on Tuesday June 6, 1933 at a location on Crescent Boulevard, Camden, New Jersey.

Google celebrates Labour Day with Google doodle

To celebrate International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, Google has honoured workers across the world with a doodle in its homepage.

May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated unofficially in many other countries.

First May Day celebration in India was organised in Madras by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on 1 May 1923. This was also the first time the red flag was used in India.

May Day is a nationwide bank and public holiday in India. The holiday is tied to labour movements for communist and socialist political parties. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, it is officially called Maharashtra Day (Maharashtra Din) and Gujarat Day respectively, since on this day in 1960 each attained statehood, after the old Bombay State became divided on linguistic lines.

In many countries, the working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. The day has long been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist and anarchist groups.

2012 London Olympics: Google Doodle Celebrates Artistic Gymnastics Men's Ring

Google has dedicated its latest doodle to the Artistic Gymnastics Men's Ring on the fourth day of the London Olympics 2012 which also followed the British team winning a medal in the category, the first in a century.

Team GB's Louis Smith, Max Whitlock, Daniel Purvis, Sam Oldham and Kristian Thomas have won the bronze medal in the gymnastics team event held on 30 July. The team was in the second position after the final round but an appeal from the Japanese team pushed them to the third position.

The last time a British team won a medal in team gymnastics - bronze - was in Stockholm 1912.

"For us, this is a dream come true. To get a bronze medal is a miracle. Silver, bronze, it doesn't matter. We have the bronze medal on our necks, who cares about silver? We set out to come top six or top five; to enjoy ourselves. To get a medal was unbelievable," team captain Louis Smith said.
The graphic image on the Google's home page depicts a male mustachioed gymnast performing on two rings which is made of the two Os in the Google logo. It also shows a cheering crowd in the background.

Artistic Gymnastics uses still rings as the gymnastic apparatus and requires extreme body strength to perform. It is known for three gymnastic disciplines - artistic, rhythmic and trampoline.

Google Celebrates the Opening of the First Drive-in Theater With New Doodle on June 6 2012.

The first drive-in theater Park-In Theaters was located on Crescent Boulevard in Camden, New Jersey.

A drive-in theater is a form of cinema structure consisting of a large outdoor screen, a projection booth, a concession stand and a large parking area for automobiles. Within this enclosed area, customers can view movies from the privacy and comfort of their cars.
The screen can be as simple as a wall that is painted white, or it can be a steel truss structure with a complex finish. Originally, a movie's sound was provided by speakers on the screen and later by an individual speaker hung from the window of each car, which would be attached by a wire. This system was superseded by the more economical and less damage-prone method of broadcasting the soundtrack at a low output power on AM or FM Radio to be picked up by a car radio. This method also allows the soundtrack to be picked up in stereo by the audience on an often high fidelity stereo installed in the car instead of monaural through a simple speaker.
