    The heavy rains that lashed Madurai on Wednesday evening did not even spare the Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple. Devotees were taken back when the courtyard outside the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Sundareswarar was inundated in the wake of the downpour.

    Madurai received 420.60 mm (42.06 cm) rainfall in just three hours between 6.30 pm and 9.30 pm on Wednesday. It was for the third time in the last one month, the temple city witnessed the same amount of rainfall on a single day, according to Revenue officials. The four Chithirai streets surrounding the temple also went under a thick sheet of water, which also intruded into the temple precincts, an unusual sight for those inside the courtyard. The temple authorities acted swiftly and started pumping out the water. But the curiosity got the better of many people who started video-graphing the courtyard flooding, where the ‘Kodimaram’ and various deities have been gracing and transmitting the visuals through social media.

    While the temple authorities blamed the poor drainage system in the Chithirai streets for inundating of the courtyard, the city corporation commissioner Dr Aneesh Sekhar said that the drainage could not discharge the huge volume of rain water that accumulated in the streets during the short span of time.

    Madurai (Tamil Nadu): मदुरै में 'कार्तिगई दीपम' का त्योहार धर्मनिष्ठा और उत्साह के साथ मनाया गया और घरों और व्यावसायिक प्रतिष्ठानों के बाहर दीपक जलाए गए. कार्तिगाई दीपम उत्सव के उपलक्ष्य में 26 नवंबर को विश्व प्रसिद्ध मीनाक्षी अम्मन मंदिर में एक लाख मिट्टी के दीपक जलाए गए. मंदिर के अधिकारियों ने स्थानीय लोगों के साथ मिलकर मंदिर परिसर के अंदर स्वर्ण कमल टैंक के चारों ओर और मीनाक्षी अम्मन मंदिर की छतों और गलियारों पर तेल और बाती के साथ मिट्टी के दीपक की व्यवस्था की. मंदिर का कोना-कोना अपनी पूरी भव्यता से जगमगा रहा था. मंदिर के पूरी तरह से रोशनी वाले टैंक और छत की झलक पाने के लिए भक्तों की भीड़ उमड़ पड़ी.

    There is an estimated 33,000 sculptures in the temple and it was in the list of top 30 nominees of the "New Seven Wonders of the World".

    The temple is the geographic and ritual center of the ancient city of Madurai and one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu. The temple complex is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonary walls. It is one of the few temples in Tamil Nadu to have four entrances facing four directions. Vishwantha Nayaka allegedly redesigned the city of Madurai in accordance with the principles laid down by Shilpa Shastras(Sanskrit: śilpa śāstra, also anglicized as silpa sastra meaning rules of architecture) relevant to urban planning.     Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple Madurai, India: The "Aayiram Kaal Mandapam" or Thousand Pillar Hall contains 985(instead of 1000) carved pillars. The hall was built by Ariyanatha Mudaliar in 1569 and it is a structure where the engineering skill and artistic vision are blended. .Each pillar in the hall is a carved monument of the Dravidian sculpture. The more prominent among the carved figures are those of Rati(wife of Cupid), Karthikeya, Ganesha, Shiva as a wandering mendicant and endless number of yalis(mythical figures of lions). There is a Temple Art Museum in the hall where icons, photographs, drawings, and other exhibits of the 1200 years old history of the temple is displayed.
    At the entrance of the hall the statue of Ariyanatha Mudaliar seated on a horse-back is present, which flanks one side of the entrance to the temple. The complex houses 14 gopurams (gateway towers) ranging from 45-50m in height, the tallest being the southern tower, 51.9 metres (170 ft) high, and two golden sculptured vimana (shrine) over sanctum of the main deities

    There is an estimated 33,000 sculptures in the temple and it was in the list of top 30 nominees of the "New Seven Wonders of the World".

    The temple is the geographic and ritual center of the ancient city of Madurai and one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu. The temple complex is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonary walls. It is one of the few temples in Tamil Nadu to have four entrances facing four directions. Vishwantha Nayaka allegedly redesigned the city of Madurai in accordance with the principles laid down by Shilpa Shastras(Sanskrit: śilpa śāstra, also anglicized as silpa sastra meaning rules of architecture) relevant to urban planning.     Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple Madurai, India: The "Aayiram Kaal Mandapam" or Thousand Pillar Hall contains 985(instead of 1000) carved pillars. The hall was built by Ariyanatha Mudaliar in 1569 and it is a structure where the engineering skill and artistic vision are blended. .Each pillar in the hall is a carved monument of the Dravidian sculpture. The more prominent among the carved figures are those of Rati(wife of Cupid), Karthikeya, Ganesha, Shiva as a wandering mendicant and endless number of yalis(mythical figures of lions). There is a Temple Art Museum in the hall where icons, photographs, drawings, and other exhibits of the 1200 years old history of the temple is displayed.
    At the entrance of the hall the statue of Ariyanatha Mudaliar seated on a horse-back is present, which flanks one side of the entrance to the temple. The statue is periodically garlanded by worshipers Just outside this hall, towards the west, are the Musical Pillars. Each pillar, when struck, produces a different musical note.

    Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple or Tiru-alavai is a historic Hindu temple located in the south side of river Vaigai in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Meenakshi and her consort, Shiva, named here as Sundareswarar (beautiful deity). The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500 year old city of Madurai.
