Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has questioned the way Team India has operated in the past few months when it comes to on-field decisions and statements which come out before matches. Sehwag talked about the inconsistency Virat Kohli’s team has shown while addressing Rishabh Pant’s form and inclusion in white-ball sides.
The explosive statement came from the ex-cricketer after India’s loss in the first T20I against England on Friday in Ahmedabad. One of the only two bowlers to take two five-fers in IPL history, Unadkat has been warming the benches so far and Sehwag reckons the left-arm pacer’s experience should be utilized. “Until last year, MI had someone like a Nathan Coulter-Nile, who would play if a pacer wasn’t performing well or was injured. If you look at MI’s bench strength now, it’s like the management will think twice to include those sitting out of the XI,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
“The likes of Mayank Markande, Jaydev Unadkat, Riley Meredith, and Arshad Khan are sitting out. Besides, even guys such as Sanjay Yadav, Arjun Tendulkar, Hrithik Shokeen, and others aren’t the type of names who can replace Basil Thampi or Daniel Sams,” he added.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar is wondering how the captaincy of an IPL team was given to youngsters like Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant.

Admitting that the wicket of Virat Kohli was a big one, Gambhir opined that Morgan’s captaincy is the weirdest he has ever seen in his life.
Gambhir has slammed Morgan for not allowing Varun Chakravarthy to bowl his second consecutive over on the trot despite the KKR spinner picking up 2 wickets in his first over. Adding that the in-form batsman, Glenn Maxwell was in early, Gambhir opined that if Morgan had allowed Chakravarthy to bowl his second consecutive over, he might have got rid of Maxwell, and the game would have been done and dusted then and there.
“Virat Kohli was a big wicket, no doubt about it. But that has to be the weirdest kind of captaincy I have ever seen in my life. Someone taking two wickets in the first over, and then does not get to bowl the next one. Probably when you know the in-form batter is in. You could have probably seen the game in the first six overs, had Varun Chakravarthy had picked the third wicket or dismissed Glenn Maxwell. This game could have been over there and then,” said Gambhir in a chat with Star Sports.

Mumbai Indians have made a dismal start to their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 campaign, losing their first three games of the season. Several loopholes have been exposed in the Rohit Sharma-led side and many are not backing them to go a long way this season. Meanwhile, a fragile bowling attack has arguably been MI’s biggest problem so far.
While Jasprit Bumrah spearheads the attack, he hasn’t received much support from his partners. The likes of Tymal Mills and Daniel Sams haven’t really lived up to the expectations. While Basil Thampi took a three-fer in his first assignment this season, he went for runs in his next two outings. Speaking on the matter, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag urged MI to induct Jaydev Unadkat into the playing XI.
One of the only two bowlers to take two five-fers in IPL history, Unadkat has been warming the benches so far and Sehwag reckons the left-arm pacer’s experience should be utilized. “Until last year, MI had someone like a Nathan Coulter-Nile, who would play if a pacer wasn’t performing well or was injured. If you look at MI’s bench strength now, it’s like the management will think twice to include those sitting out of the XI,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
“The likes of Mayank Markande, Jaydev Unadkat, Riley Meredith, and Arshad Khan are sitting out. Besides, even guys such as Sanjay Yadav, Arjun Tendulkar, Hrithik Shokeen, and others aren’t the type of names who can replace Basil Thampi or Daniel Sams,” he added.
MI’s bowling stocks appear weak: Virender Sehwag
Notably, Unadkat has taken 85 wickets in 86 IPL matches but his economy rate of 8.74 is on the higher side. From getting the new ball to swing to delivering slower deliveries in the slog overs, the 30-year-old has many weapons in his armoury. However, his tendency to get wayward has restricted him from performing consistently.

MS Dhoni was re-appointed as the Chennai Super Kings captain after the defending champions’ underwhelming performances in the IPL 2022 where they could only manage two wins from eight outings prior to their clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 1. Meanwhile, CSK got the better of SRH by 13 runs and earned those two precious points.
After the title-holders registered their third win of the season, former India vice-captain Virender Shewag has reckoned that Chennai under the leadership of Dhoni can reach the playoffs this time around. He recalled the Commonwealth Bank tri-series of the 2007/08 season when a young Indian team made history on Australian soil.
“I have been with that man since 2005 and I have seen Indian cricket change under him,” Sehwag said while speaking on Cricbuzz. “After that, we won several ICC knockouts, home series under him, the ones which we used to lose before but they turned into victories. So keeping that in mind, I am saying that it can happen [CSK winning 6 games in a row].”
CSK are now at the ninth spot in the points table with three wins from nine matches and six points to their tally. They need to win all their remaining fixtures from hereon to give themselves a chance to make it into the final four as they look forward to successfully defending their title. It was under Dhoni’s reign that CSK won their record fourth title last season and this time, he would once again be expected to do the unthinkable as Chennai eye a record-equaling fifth IPL crown.
A pumped-up Chennai Super Kings will next be seen in action against the southern rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on May 4. RCB themselves are struggling, having lost three consecutive games in one week against SRH, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans respectively.
