വികസനമെന്നതു വമ്പന് കെട്ടിടങ്ങളും കോണ്ക്രീറ്റ് നിര്മിതികളുമാണെന്നു ചിന്തിക്കുന്നവര്ക്കു മുന്നില് വേറിട്ട മാതൃകയാവുകയാണ് പിച്ചവാരം എന്ന തുരുത്ത്.തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ കടലൂര് ജില്ലയിലാണ് പിച്ചവാരം. അഴിമുഖങ്ങള്ക്കിടയില് വ്യാപിച്ചുകിടക്കുന്ന വെള്ളക്കെട്ടു നിറഞ്ഞ ചതുപ്പ്. പുഴകളുടെ സംഗമ സ്ഥാനം. വര്ഷത്തില് ഏതുസമയത്തും യാത്ര പോകാവുന്ന സ്ഥലമാണ് പിച്ചവാരം. പിച്ചവാരത്തെ കണ്ടല്ക്കാടുകള് കാണാന് ബോട്ടുയാത്രയാണ് ഏറ്റവും നല്ലത്. സഞ്ചാരികളെ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടു തമിഴ്നാട് ടൂറിസം വകുപ്പ് ബോട്ട് സര്വീസും നടത്തുന്നുണ്ട്.ഏരിയല് വ്യൂ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നവര്ക്കായി വാച്ച് ടവറും ഉണ്ട്. ഏകദേശം രണ്ടു മൂന്നടി താഴ്ച മാത്രമുള്ള അധികം ആഴമില്ലാത്തതാണ് പിച്ചവാരം ജലാശയം. 147 ഇനം മത്സ്യങ്ങളെ ഇവിടെ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പക്ഷികളുടെ വിഹാരകേന്ദ്രമായതിനാല് പക്ഷി നിരീക്ഷകരുടെ ഇഷ്ട സങ്കേതംകൂടിയാണിവിടം. മത്സ്യബന്ധനത്തിലൂടെയും കക്കവാരിയും ഉപജീവനം കഴിക്കുന്ന സാധുക്കളായ ഗ്രാമീണരാണ് പിച്ചവാരത്തിന്റെ സംരക്ഷകര്. മറ്റെന്തിനേക്കാളും ഉപരിയായി അവര് കണ്ടല്ക്കാടുകളുടെ സംരക്ഷണം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുന്നു. സര്വകലാശാല ബിരുദങ്ങളും വെള്ളക്കോളര് ജോലിയും ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും ഒരു തുണ്ടു പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് പോലും പിച്ചവാരത്തിന്റെ മണ്ണില് സ്പര്ശിക്കാതിരിക്കാന് നാട്ടുകാര് ശ്രദ്ധചെലുത്തുന്നു. ജൈവ വൈവിധ്യത്തിന്റെ കലവറകൂടിയാണ് പിച്ചവാരം.
