2013 Kentucky Derby picks and analysis from Liam Durbin
The new points system for qualifying horses for the Kentucky Derby appears to have served its purpose. The race is full of horses with the preferred pedigree and running style to handle the distance. While this has served to restore some purity to the race, it has also made the race tougher to handicap because many of the horses now excluded by the points system were easy toss-outs for handicappers. This field of 20 is very even. A case could be made for every one of them to win.
Orb was made the morning-line favorite, in a bit of a surprise, over Verrazano, who many thought would be made the favorite after remaining perfect in the Wood Memorial. In that race, Verrazano got the job done, but appeared to show some distance limitations, giving up ground to Vyjack and Normandy Invasion in the deep stretch. Verrazano is expected to try to win the Derby on the lead, and there will be horses that attempt to keep up with him in the early going. He will be challenged. Orb likes to come off the pace, so he could well be the one to chop down Verrazano in the stretch. He has been training well at Churchill Downs and looks great. He also comes into the Derby on four straight wins.
After these top two horses, there is not much of a drop in quality to the next tier of contenders. Three of those horses come into the Derby following impressive wins in Grade I qualifying races. Conditions will be wet and muddy for the 2013 Kentucky Derby. SBNation weather contributor, Meteorologist Brian Neudorff, gives us the weekend weather forecast.
The forecast for the remainder of the day for the Kentucky Oaks should be mostly cloudy with a chance of an isolated to scattered shower later this afternoon. The post time for the Kentucky Oaks race is at 5:45 p.m. EDT, there could be scattered rain showers and even some thunderstorms. Temperatures this afternoon and evening will be in the low to mid 70s.
Scattered showers will continue overnight and rain will be increase as we go through out the morning Saturday. The rain is expected to last most if not all day. This will cause sloppy, muddy conditions for the 139th Kentucky Derby. It is possible that Churchill Downs receives between a quarter to a half an inch of rain by the time the Derby actually takes place at 6:24 p.m. EDT.
Saturday's weather forecast is for cloudy skies and off and on rain showers. Some of these showers will be heavy and steady especially from midday into the afternoon. Number 10. Jockeys have strict weight requirements. At the Kentucky Derby the maximum is a scant 126 pounds, which is considered the limit the horses can handle. Riders have been known to take extreme measures to pass the pre-event weigh-in, including inducing vomiting, jogging in rubber suits, and taking diet pills.
Number 9. It never gets rained out. That's not because the sun is always shining at Churchill Downs, it's because rain or shine, they run anyway, and have been doing so since 1875.
Number 8. Number 8. The winning horse is draped with a garland of 554 red roses. That's how many are in the garland that's draped over the victor. It's also why the race is sometimes referred to as 'The Run for the Roses'. Incidentally, the jockey only gets a bouquet of 60.
Number 7. The maximum participation age is 3. For the horses, that is. Considering thoroughbreds can live to be up to 30, their window for glory is quite small.
