Mary Anning: Google doodle celebrates the missing woman of geology
Is this the only existing photograph of renowned palaeontologist and geologist Mary Anning? Suzanne Pilaar Birch celebrates thewoman who helped make geology a science, 215 today and subject of a Google doodle.
Mary Anning, born in 1799, was the discoverer of the famous ichthyosaur and plesiosaur fossils on the Jurassic coast of Dorset. Following her death in 1847, Charles Dickens wrote of her contribution to geology: "It was not a science when she began to discover, and so [she] helped to make it one." The Natural History Museum in London has called her the "greatest fossil hunter ever known".
Simply titled The Geologists, the image above is known as a calotype or salt print. It is one of the earliest examples of photography, captured by the pioneer who developed the method, William Henry Fox Talbot, on the Dorset coast in 1843. Could it show Anning? The dress of the woman looks strikingly similar to that in Anning's portrait.
We know that Henry de la Beche, president of the British Geological Survey and a close friend of Anning, had corresponded with Talbot in February of that year, requesting him to take geological photographs. Talbot was initially reticent, but in March 1843 agreed to meet with de la Beche. We know from letters and other sources they became friends. Could the woman be Anning and the man de la Beche?

Google doodle celebrates Mary Anning's 215th Birth Anniversary
Internet giant Google on Wednesday celebrated the 215th anniversary of the birth of British palaeontologist Mary Anning with a special doodle.
The Google homepage shows Mary Anning hunting for fossils with the fossilized remains of the animals making up Google's letters.
Anning is best known for her work collecting fossils from the Jurassic period near her home in Lyme Regis Dorset.
Born on May 21st 1799, Anning contributed to fundamental changes that occurred during her lifetime in scientific thinking about prehistoric life and the history of the Earth. Her first discovery was a skull, when she was just twelve, along with her brother Joseph.
Despite her popularity in Britain, Europe and America, Mary Anning couldn't make it to the Geological Society of London on account of her gender.

Mary Leakey Honored With Google Doodle
Mary Leakey is being honored with a Google doodle in parts of the world where it is already February 6th (like Australia).
Leakey was a British archaeologist and anthropologist, who discovered the first fossilized Proconsul (extinct ape believed to be ancestral to humans) skull. She also discovered the Zinjanthropus (Paranthropus, a genus of extinct hominins) skull.
Leakey was born on February 6, 1913, which obviously, makes this her 100th birthday. She died in 1996 at the age of 83. Here’s a look at Google’s Knowledge Panel for Leakey:

Google on Wednesday celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of British archaeologist, Mary Leakey by putting up a doodle on its home page.
The doodle features Mary Leakey at an archaeological site engrossed in excavation. Like in reality, the doodle has two Dalmatians running around her. Mary, a known animal-lover, was generally accompanied in the field by three to four Dalmatians.
Interestingly, the doodle also features one of Leakey's major discoveries, "the Laetoli footprints", and some tools used in archaeology.
The first and last two letters of the word Google - G, O and L, E -are seen in the background while Mary Leakey and the Dalmatians replace the second O and second G of the word.
In 1978, six years after her husband's death, Mary Leakey made her most important discovery - footprints frozen for 3.5 million years in volcanic mud. Her discovery revealed that early hominids walked upright much earlier than previously thought.
Born on February 6 1913, Mary Leakey, despite the lack of formal archaeological training, is widely known for discovering the first fossilised Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans, and the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge.
Along with her husband Louis Leakey, Mary uncovered the tools and fossils of ancient hominids.

Saul Bass Doodle by Google - Video doodle for SB 93rd birthday
Watch Here: Google posts a video doodle for Saul Bass' 93rd birthday!
Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 -- April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.
During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most prominent filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. Among his most famous title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the credits racing up and down what eventually becomes a high-angle shot of a skyscraper in Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that races together and apart in Psycho.
Bass designed some of the most iconic corporate logos in North America, including the AT&T "bell" logo in 1969, as well as AT&T's "globe" logo in 1983 after the breakup of the Bell System. He also designed Continental Airlines' 1968 "jetstream" logo and United Airlines' 1974 "tulip" logo which became some of the most recognized airline industry logos of the era. Google honored Saul Bass by featuring him in a Google Doodle on May 8, 2013.ଏହି ଭାବରେ Anup Sahni| 65749 ଦୃଶ୍ୟସଂଖ୍ୟା
Google has celebrated the 215th birthday of Mary Anning, the British fossil collector and paleontologist.
The image shows Anning brushing dirt away from a giant dinosaur skeleton that spells out ‘Google’, while her tools rest in a basket beside her.
Anning made some of the most significant geological discoveries of all time, including crocodile-like ichthyosaurs.
Anning was born to dissenters Richard Anning and Mary Moore in Lyme Regis, Dorset, on 21 May 1799. She and her brother Joseph were the only survivors among 10 children born to their parents. Anning was named after her sister who died in a house fire.
In August 1800, at just 15 months old, Anning was hit by a lightning strike that killed three other people - an incident that became part of local lore, and that was said to have turned her into a particularly bright child.
Anning was taught how to search for fossils by her carpenter father. In the summer, the pair would sell the specimens they collected to middle class holidaymakers from a stall on the seafront in Lyme.
After her father died in 1810, aged 44, Anning supplemented her family’s minuscule income by continuing to run the stall.
Her first major excavation came in 1811, when her brother Joseph found a skull in a cliff. Mary spent months excavating the creature’s bones, and discovered a ‘crocodile’, later named ichthyosaurs, ‘fish-lizard’.
