Belgium vs Argentina - Men's Hero Hockey World League Final India 5th/8th Place [17/1/2014]

"In the pool match earlier in the tournament, Carlos Retegui's Los Leones ran out winners. However, in the second meeting of the lions, Belgium got their revenge after winning the shoot out 3-1. In regular time the match played out to a 1-1 draw. This means that Belgium have won their first match in the Hero Hockey World League Final and Argentina lost have their second shoot out of the tournament.

In the first half Argentina soaked up the Belgium pressure with goal keeper Vincent Vanash being called into action to make several consecutive saves. The only ball to get past Vanash was a shot from Sebastien Dockier, which hit the post.

Finally, after 25 minutes of unrelenting pressure from Belgium, Argentina broke down play and a quick counter attack led to Matias Rey (31) scoring the opening goal on his 100th cap.

Coach Marc Lammers summed up his team's problem at half time: "We are playing well, but we have forgotten to score, just like in the other game."

In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Argentina took a more commanding role, with a series of incursions into the Belgium circle, but again it was a counter attack that nearly brought the second goal, with Dockier unlucky to see his shot fly just inches past the Argentine post.

Belgium continued to raise the tempo of the game, and their equaliser came from an own goal in the 56th minute despite a lengthy video referral.

The final match on Day 1 of the Hero Hockey World League saw hosts India take on fourth-ranked England in what turned out to be an unhappy encounter for the home team. A brace by Adam Dixon was the difference between the teams as England emerged 2-0 winners in the Pool A match.

The first 15 minutes of the game saw both teams playing some cagey hockey as they sounded each other out, but then the Indian team raised the tempo, urged on by the noisy and enthusiastic crowd.

Two penalty corners awarded to India amounted to nothing and gradually a lack of goals began to frustrate the home side. England began to play higher up the pitch and, in turn, were rewarded with successive penalty corners. These also came to nothing and both teams struggled to maintain composure in the attacking circle as they sought the all important breakthrough.

That breakthrough came in the last 10 minutes of the first half as Adam Dixon (28') converted from a penalty corner. It was 10 minutes into the second half before the next goal came as, to the crowd's consternation, Dixon (45) found the net again. 12 minutes from time India scored but the goal was disallowed following a successful referral by England.
