NASA - Six Decades of a Warming Earth

This visualization shows how global temperatures have risen from 1950 through the end of 2013.

NASA scientists say 2013 tied for the seventh warmest of any year since 1880, continuing a long-term trend of rising global temperatures. With the exception of 1998, the 10 warmest years in the 133-year record all have occurred since 2000, with 2010 and 2005 ranking as the hottest years on record.

NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, which analyzes global surface temperatures on an ongoing basis, released an updated report Tuesday, Jan. 21, on temperatures around the globe in 2013. The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience warmer temperatures than several decades ago.

The visualization shows a running five-year average global temperature, as compared to a baseline average global temperature from 1951-1980.

The Kepler spacecraft has been looking for signs of new worlds outside the Solar System since May 2009, and has so far found more than 4,000 planets in the so-called 'Goldilocks Zone' - neither too hot, nor too cold to sustain life.

The discoveries give new hope that alien civilisations may exist beyond the Solar System.

NASA finds evidence of liquid water on Mars, boosting hopes of finding life beyond Earth

NASA has confirmed that there is liquid water flowing on Mars, which is a potential breakthrough in the quest to search for life beyond Earth.

According to NASA scientists, liquid water runs down canyons and crater walls on Mars, leaving dark stains in the terrain. These stains, known as the recurring slope lineae — or RSL — occur when temperatures rise above -10 Fahrenheit. The stains disappear during the cold season.

Scientists discovered perchlorate salts, which is crucial in keeping water in liquid form by lowering the freezing point of water on Mars' surface by looking at infrared light waves reflected from the RSL. The result showed that the wavelengths are commonly associated with deliquescence, a process where salt absorbs water from the air, said Georgia Tech doctoral student Lujendra Ojha. Ojha first discovered the stains while still an undergraduate student at the University of Arizona in 2011.

An old NASA satellite is out of control and plunging back towards Earth. But U.S. scientists have been left guessing where it will land - as it could be anywhere on the planet. RT's Peter Oliver sought out some top Russian astronomers and cosmonauts to look at whether we should be watching our heads.
