Tributes have been paid to British Olympic sailing hero Andrew Simpson, who has died after his yacht capsized during training for the America’s Cup race.
The 36-year-old, nicknamed 'Bart', was trapped under the 72-foot catamaran in a training accident on the Artemis catamaran in San Francisco Bay, California.
A statement from Sir Ben Ainslie's Oracle team read: "Today is a sad day for all of us in the sailing community. Andrew Simpson was a great person, a terrific sailor, and a good friend to all of our team.

Andrew Simpson: Tributes for Olympic sailor killed in accident
British Sailing's performance director John Derbyshire has led the tributes to Olympic gold medallist Andrew Simpson, who has died in a training accident.
Simpson, 36, won gold in the Star class with Iain Percy at the 2008 Olympics and silver at last year's Games.
Known as Bart, he died when the catamaran he was aboard capsized during training for the America's Cup in San Francisco Bay.
Derbyshire said: "Bart was one of the top sailors. He was a really nice guy."
"It's a really big shock, totally unexpected. These are big powerful boats but you don't associate them with fatalities. It's very sad."
Simpson was one of an 11-man crew on board the catamaran. He was trapped underneath when it capsized and did not respond to efforts to revive him using CPR.
The Surrey-born sailor was preparing for this year's America's Cup, the oldest trophy in sport, with Swedish team Artemis Racing.
America's Cup chief executive Stephen Barclay says he will wait for the full details of the accident before deciding whether changes should be made to the race, which has an opening ceremony on 4 July.
Barclay told BBC Radio 5 live: "We'll review the circumstances and find out the facts and if changes are needed we'll make them but we can't judge that now.

Attempts were made to revive the 36-year-old both in the water and on shore, but he was unable to be saved.
An investigation into the cause of the tragedy is in its early stages, however, there are suggestions that the catamaran had been in and out of a workshop with problems on its body work.
Sky's Siobham Robbins added: "One of the things that they might be looking at is whether the actual fabric of the catamaran played a part in this. There are also reports that after the crash the main beam of the catamaran had split - the beam that joins the front and the back. However, as yet, there's no clear cause as to why this happened."

British Olympic sailor killed in capsize in San Francisco Bay
Friends and fellow sailors mourned double Olympic medalist Andrew "Bart" Simpson after the shocking news that he had died in San Francisco Bay while training for the America's Cup.
The British sailor's death followed the capsizing Wednesday of a 72-foot Artemis Racing boat during a training run.
After Simpson, 36, was pulled from the water, attempts were made to revive him on a boat aiding the rescue operation and on land, but they were unsuccessful.
The other 10 crew members were all accounted for, Sweden's Artemis Racing said.
"The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened," Artemis Racing chief executive Paul Cayard told reporters in Alameda, the city in eastern San Francisco Bay where the team is based.
"Our prayers are with Andrew Simpson's family, his wife and kids, and also the rest of my teammates. It's a shocking experience to go through, and we have a lot to deal with in the next few days in terms of assuring everybody's well being."
Cayard said the catamaran was "under control" but that the team's first concern was for its people.
Simpson won a gold medal in sailing's Star class at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and silver at last year's Olympics, when Britain was the host nation.

Simpson was part of Sweden's Artemis team taking part in training for the America's Cup off the California coast.
The British Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson died on Thursday after his team's ultra-modern yacht capsized in the San Francisco bay and trapped him underwater during training for the America's Cup.
The 72-foot Artemis catamaran tipped over at 1.15pm local time, plunging its 13-strong crew into the water and trapping Simpson under the vessel's platform for about 10 minutes.
Rescuers pulled Simpson, 36, into a support boat and an officer from the San Francisco police department's marine unit tried to resuscitate him. He was declared dead about 20 minutes later, said San Francisco fire chief Joanne Hayes-White.
Simpson won a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a crew member in the star class, and he also took silver last year at the London Games.
"The entire team is devastated by what happened," said Artemis chief executive Paul Cayard, a sailing world champion and America's Cup veteran. "Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew's wife and family."
One other crew member was hurt but his condition was not said to be serious. The rest of the crew escaped unharmed and was taken to its nearby base at Alameda, where members were said to be in tears.
