Labour Day 2012 - Google Doodle to Celebrate Worker's Day on September 3rd

Labor Day is an American federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 3 in 2012) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.

    History:
In 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York.[1] Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882,[2] after witnessing the annual labor festival held in Toronto, Canada.[3]
Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.[2] Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland reconciled with Reyes, leader of the labor movement. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.[4] The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to comme

Labor Day in the United States is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886, U.S. President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.[1]

The equivalent holiday in Canada, Labour Day, is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. In many other countries (more than 80 worldwide), "Labour Day" is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers' Day, which is observed on May 1.

Alan Mathison Turing's 100th birthday: Google pays tribute with a doodle

Google on Saturday marked the celebrations of the 100th birth anniversary of computer scientist Alan Mathison Turing with an attractive doodle. Turing, who is also known as the founder of computer science, played a significant role in breaking the wartime Enigma- enciphered messages.

Alan Turing was born in London on 23 June, 1912 and from a very early age he showed deep interest toward science and mathematics. As he grew, Turing showed exceptional ability in solving advanced problems. His innovative mind conducted several test and also worked on the design of the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE). In 1946, he presented a paper which is known as the first elaborate design of a stored-program computer.

His life is full of achievements and because of this extraordinary work he was appointed Reader in the Mathematics Department at the University of Manchester in 1948. His contribution in mathematics and 'Computing machinery and intelligence' are still considered to be significant work.

Turing was convicted of his homosexual actions as criminal act in the United Kingdom in 1952. After two years of conviction on 8 June, 1954 he was reported dead due to cyanide poisoning which was believed to be a suicide.
In 2009, after a campaign the then prime minister of the United Kingdom Gordon Brown issued an apology for Turing's treatment on behalf of the British government.

Google doodle pays tribute to mother of computer programming Ada Lovelace

Search giant Google on Monday paid tribute to a woman who many consider as the mother of computer programming: Augusta Ada King, a.k.a. Ada Lovelace, with - what else - one of its patented doodles.
Hovering the pointer or mouse over the logo would produce a bubble indicating December 10 would have been Ada Lovelace's 197th birth anniversary.

"In the Google Doodle there is a mathematical formula written in a bubble just above the “G” in Google. There is also a drawing of a woman in the image, which looks a lot like Ada Lovelace. In the doodle there are also symbols of what was considered the first computers to modern day computers like a laptop and iPad or Tab," said an article on 3d-car-shows.com.

With all the images and the words “Google” written in what looks like a lace type font, I personally think that Google have done a great job today, telling the world about Ada Lovelace and the legacy she left behind!

As in the past, clicking on the doodle would take the visitor to a Google Search Results page for Ada Lovelace.

Ada Lovelace, was mainly known for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical computer, the analytical engine.

Her notes on the engine include what is considered the first algorithm for a machine, leading many to consider her the world's first computer programmer.

Google salutes workers all over the world by dedicating a doodle to the workers on the ocassion of International Workers' Day, 2013, on Wednesday.

Also known as Labour Day, May 1 is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers throughout the year.

The doodle on the homepage shows Google's logo in the shape of building blocks with several men doing their jobs.

The doodle features an IT professional on her computer, a gardener watering a tree, a painter giving the letter 'O' a paint job and a plumber fixing a leak around the letter 'E'.

We can also see a helicopter hovering above the second 'G' and a satellite dish, indicative of modern-day communication, perched on the 'E'.

Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, especially the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

Labour Day in India is celebrated on May 1 every year. It is an official public holiday.

In India, the first International Workers’ Day (also known as May Day) was celebrated in Madras by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on May 1, 1923.

May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated
