The UK and Sweden have criticised Ecuador for granting political asylum to Julian Assange as the diplomatic row over what to do with him intensifies.
The Wikileaks founder took refuge at Ecuador's London embassy in June as he faced extradition to Sweden over sexual assault claims, which he denies.
The UK has said it will not allow him safe passage out of the country.
Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said he hoped talks with the UK would "overcome this".
He told BBC Mundo the UK should respect Ecuador's "sovereign decision" otherwise "we will use the alternatives under international law to demand the safe passage".
"We don't think it is reasonable that, after a sovereign government has made the decision of granting political asylum, a citizen is forced to live in an embassy for a long period," he added.
Mr Patino also claimed "other elements" were motivating Sweden's wish to extradite Mr Assange, and also tweeted his "sincere appreciation" to the national assembly in Ecuador which passed a resolution condemning the "threat" to Mr Assange's political asylum.

But now, after Ecuador's decision on Thursday to grant him asylum and Britain's vow to arrest him the moment he steps out of the sanctuary he has found in Ecuador's embassy in London, the Australian-born Assange seems at last to have secured a fixed address. Considering the diplomatic impasse and the vehemence of opinion on both sides, it is one that could be his for months, or even years, if neither Ecuador nor Britain relents.
The address - 3 Hans Crescent - lies in the heart of London's exclusive Knightsbridge district. Barely 50 yards from Assange's safehouse is the men's clothing section of Harrods department store, one of Europe's most expensive places to shop.
But for all its attractions - denied him, in any case, by his confinement to the embassy - it is hardly the sanctuary that Assange would have chosen. In his vision, he has been the matchless pioneer of a movement set to transcend boundaries of nationality, custom and law, using WikiLeaks to tear down walls of secrecy and foster a new era of global transparency and justice.

Britain insists that if he steps outside, he will be detained and sent to Sweden, as by law it must meet the obligations of a European arrest warrant.
Praising Correa, Assange said "a courageous Latin American nation took a stand for justice," in offering him sanctuary, but did not refer to the Swedish allegations against him.
