Afghans fear 80 Dead after Quake Triggers Landslide
Two shallow quakes less than half an hour apart shook the mountainous Hindu Kush region on Monday, starting a slide of debris that smashed into a remote village, burying mudbrick houses to a depth of up to 100 metres (300 feet).
In Burka district, the worst-hit area in the province of Baghlan, people in the village of Mullah Jan said 71 people had been trapped. An official who asked not to be named described the chances of survival as "very slim.
The governor of Baghlan province said 22 homes were buried but the bodies of only two women had been recovered. Twenty people were in hospital with injuries."We don’t think we will be able to take out the other bodies," Governor Abdul Majid said Officials have so far confirmed that only three bodies have been recovered, while six injured people have been rescued.
A bulldozer was at work digging through the rubble at Mullah Jan, according to Rafiullah Rasoolzai, spokesman for the disaster response agency, who said emergency supplies of food, water and shelter had been brought in.
"Villagers told Afghan government representatives that 71 people are missing," he said. "They’re buried in their home under between 30 and 100 metres of dirt and earth."By Mansi| 629 views
100 feared buried as Afghan quake triggers landslide
Almost all the women and children of a remote settlement were trapped under debris, while most of the men who were in farms as the quakes struck, escaped,
As many as 100 people are feared dead after two earthquakes triggered landslides that buried more than 25 houses in a remote mountainous region of northern Afghanistan on Monday, provincial officials said on Tuesday.
Officials said that almost all the women and children of the 25 destroyed houses of the remote settlement have been trapped under the debrissince Monday and are feared dead.
The men were out in their farms during the quakes, and so perhaps escaped, they said.
The two quakes of 5.4 and 5.7 magnitudes struck the mountainous region, bringing a massive slide of mud and rocks that buried houses so deep in the remote mountain village of Sayi Hazara that rescuers gave up trying to use shovels to dig through the buried buildings, said Jawed Basharat, a spokesman for the provincial police chief.
There were no visible signs of the buildings underneath. "We need bulldozers or other machinery to remove all this earth and get the bodies out, or the survivors if there are any," Basharat said.
They knew how many houses were buried only from information provided by area residents, who said between 25 and 30 houses disappeared in the landslide.

Japan earthquake and tsunami triggers Fukushima fears
Japan earthquake and tsunami triggers Fukushima fears:
Quake and tsunami jolts north-east Japan, striking regions hardest-hit in 2011 disaster that killed 20,000 people.
Japan escaped largely unscathed on Friday after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake shook the north-east coast. It was, however, a chilling reminder of the 9.0 quake that struck the area in March 2011, triggering a tsunami that killed almost 20,000 people and a triple meltdown at the nearby Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Initially, the appearance on TV screens of a tsunami warning, and repeated announcements to remember last year's tragedy and flee the coast, prompted fears of a second disaster in less than two years in the worst-affected prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima.
Less than an hour later, a tsunami washed ashore in Ishinomaki, one of the hardest-hit towns in last year's tragedy, where the rebuilding process has barely begun. Mercifully, this time the wave was just a metre high. Two hours after the quake struck 150 miles offshore at 5:18pm local time, the meteorological agency cancelled its tsunami warning.
Narita airport closed briefly for safety checks and phone lines were temporarily jammed by the large volume of calls. Several, much smaller, tsunamis lashed other parts of the coast, including Soma city, which lies just outside the 12-mile (20km) evacuation zone imposed around the Fukushima plant.By Sanjay Jaluthriya| 653 views

Indonesia issues tsunami warning after 8.7 earthquake
Jakarta: Indonesia issued a tsunami warning Wednesday after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 hit waters off westernmost Aceh province. People on Twitter said tremors were felt in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and India. High-rise apartments and offices on Malaysia's west coast shook for at least a minute.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.

Indonesia issues tsunami warning after 8.9 quake 4/11/2012
An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 8.9 has struck under the sea off Indonesia's northern Aceh province.
The quake triggered a tsunami warning across the Indian Ocean region.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it was not yet known whether a tsunami had been generated, but advised authorities to "take appropriate action".
The region is regularly hit by earthquakes. The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 killed 170,000 people in Aceh.
The US Geological Survey, which documents quakes worldwide, said the Aceh quake was centred 33km (20 miles) under the sea about 495km from Banda Aceh, the provincial capital.
It was initially reported as 8.9 magnitude but was later revised down to 8.7 by the USGS.
The tsunami centre's warning said quakes of such a magnitude "have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin".
The tremor was felt as far away as Singapore, Thailand and India.
Reuters reports that people in the region were making their way to higher ground.
The BBC's Karishma Vaswani in the Indonesian capital Jakarta says there were reports of the ground shaking for up to five minutes. Contact with people in the immediate area around the quake has not been possiBy Puneet Munjal| 476 views

Earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3.
A strong earthquake struck Friday off the coast of northeastern Japan in the same region that was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami last year. Tokyo high-rises swayed for several minutes, one city reported a small tsunami and at least two people were reported injured.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 and struck in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Miyagi prefecture at 5:18 p.m. local time. The epicentre was 10 kilometres beneath the seabed and 240 kilometres offshore.
After the quake, authorities issued a warning that a tsunami potentially as high as two metres could hit. Ishinomaki, a city in Miyagi, reported that a tsunami of one metre hit at 6:02 p.m. The tsunami warning was subsequently cancelled two hours after the quake occurred
Aiko Hibiya, a volunteer for the recovery in Minami-Sanriku, a coastal town devastated by last year's tsunami, said she was at a friend's temporary housing when the quake struck.
"It shook for such a long time," she said.
She said other volunteers who had been in coastal areas were evacuated to a square and a parking lot and were waiting for the tsunami warnings to be lifted.
Miyagi prefectural police said there were no immediate reports of damage from the quake or tsunami, although traffic was being stopped in some places t
