Powerful 6.9 quake strikes off California coast
A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck late Sunday off the coast of northern California, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or a tsunami threat.
The quake struck at 0518 GMT with an epicenter located 77 kilometers (48 miles) west-northwest of the town of Ferndale and at a depth of seven kilometers (4.3 miles), said the USGS, which monitors earthquakes worldwide.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but early reports indicate the quake was felt as far away as San Francisco, around 400 kilometers south of Ferndale.
Authorities in Humboldt County, the part of sparsely-populated northern California some 250 miles up the coast from San Francisco, said they had no calls about damage of injuries, local media reported.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin announcing the quake, but downplayed any danger.
"A widespread destructive tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the Center said.
The USGS said there is a 90 percent probability of a "strong and possibly damaging aftershock" of magnitude 5 or more in the next seven days, and a 5-10 percent chance of a quake equal to or great than Sunday's temblor.

Jakarta, Indonesia -- A massive earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a tsunami alert for the Indian Ocean.
The quake struck about 434 kilometers (270 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Indonesia's Aceh province, and had a magnitude of 8.6, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It took place at a depth of 23 kilometers (14 miles).
The tremor revived fearful memories of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in the region in 2004 that killed tens of thousands of people.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Wednesday that it had issued a tsunami watch for the entire Indian Ocean, and the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said it had put up a tsunami warning.
The Indonesian president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said on local television that there were no reports of casualties or damage in Aceh so far.
The areas most at risk of a tsunami are coastal areas of Aceh, particularly the island of Simeulue, Prih Harjadi, an official for the Indonesian geophysics agency said on Metro TV.

A small tsunami hit the northeastern coast of Japan after a strong earthquakes overnight, but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last year's devastating tsunami.
The first tremor off Hokkaido island was 6.8 magnitude and prompted some communities to issue evacuation orders or advisories to residents nearest the coast.
A 20 centimetre wave prompted authorities to issue an evacuation warning for coastal residents off the northern island of Hokkaido, but the tsunami advisories were lifted about 90 minutes later.
Smaller waves were also reported in several locations on Hokkaido island and Aomori prefecture.
The earthquake felt in Tokyo was magnitude 6.1 and centred just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, at a rather shallow 10 kilometres below the sea surface.
The town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, where more than 800 died in last year's tsunami, issued an evacuation order to coastal households as a precaution after Wednesday's first quake, said prefectural disaster management official Shinichi Motoyama. No damage or injury was reported, he said.
Iwate was heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of aftershocks have shaken the region since then, nearly all of them of minor or moderate strength.

A strong earthquake shook northern Japan on Wednesday evening, causing small tidal changes on its Pacific coastline but no damage or injury was reported.
Several towns issued evacuation orders or advisories to residents nearest the coast. A swelling of 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed in the port of Hachinohe in Aomori, northern Japan, about one hour after the quake struck the region. Smaller changes were also reported in several locations on Hokkaido island and Aomori prefecture.
The agency lifted all tsunami advisories about an hour and half later.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the tremor was 6.8 magnitude. An aftershock of magnitude 5.9 struck followed about two hours later.
The town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, where more than 800 died in last year's tsunami, issued an evacuation order to all households along the coast as a precaution, said prefectural disaster management official Shinichi Motoyama. No damage or injury was reported from the quake so far, he said.
Iwate was heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of aftershocks have shaken the region since then, nearly all of them of minor or moderate strength.
The magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 left some 19,000 people dead or missing.
Japan marked the first anniversary of the disasters on Sunday, as the country still struggles to rebuild.

The US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had said there was no threat to the wider Pacific Ocean but had warned a local tsunami could be destructive for local coastlines.

Warnings of the tsunami height had varied between 50cm and 2m.
The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo says any such height would represent a far lower risk of devastation than the tsunami of up to 11 metres that struck in 2011 but that, since then, the country has clearly become jittery about any shaking of the earth.

As the latest quake struck, the NHK TV network urged: “Remember last year. Call on your neighbours and flee to higher ground now. Do not go back.”
A tsunami warning from Honshu to Tokyo was cancelled, with only two people hurt.
There were three aftershocks of 6.2, 5.5 and 4.7 magnitude.
English teacher John Heritage told the BBC: "We're at an evacuation centre waiting to hear what to do next."
