On February 15, a 45-meter wide asteroid known as "2012 DA14" will pass within 20,000 miles of Earth, which is approximately 1/12th of the way to the Moon and well within range of many Earth-orbiting satellites. While scientists don't anticipate a collision with Earth, it could make for some fantastic skywatching for space geeks in certain parts of the world.
To capture the event, AGI aerospace engineers have used our Systems Tool Kit(STK) software to create an animation showing:
-2012 DA14's deep space trajectory as it approaches Earth
-The pass by Earth below the GEO Belt and crossing the equatorial plane from South to North
-A closeup of the asteroid during its closest approach

It begins to get on your nerves. Every now and then -- a few times a year, depending on what you count -- an asteroid goes whizzing past Earth at fairly close range, reminding us that sometimes outer space isn't quite as, well, spacious as we may like to think.
This month's visit will be by a fast-moving space rock called 2012 DA14, which will pass about 17,200 miles from Earth's surface on Feb. 15. It's only about 150 feet across, so astronomers say not to bother to look for it in the sky -- but it will be closer than the communications satellites that ring the planet, 22,000 miles away.
NASA scientists have had a lot of time to plot the orbit of 2012 DA14, and they say they are quite sure it will miss us. There are dust-sized pieces of debris plowing harmlessly into the atmosphere all the time; we see some of them as shooting stars at night. Impacts like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago, are separated by tens of millions of years.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 passed the Earth on Friday. At around 7.30pm GMT it will be as close as 17,200 miles to the Earth.
The asteroid will be very faint, it will be thousands of times fainter than Jupiter and 250 times fainter than the stars of the Plough. However if you live in a part of the world where it is dark enough at the time the asteroid passes you should be able to see it with a good pair of binoculars or a telescope.
