  • Google's Manipulation.

    Google's Manipulation.

A famous research psychologist Dr. Robert Epstein has brought attention to Google’s alarming manipulation of newsfeeds, search results, and YouTube suggestions. Despite the focus on Twitter & Facebook’s censorship and biases, Google, the worst offender among Big Tech giants, has managed to evade scrutiny, but now it seems the tech giant has set its sights on our children.

Google has been accused of manipulating search results in a number of ways, including:

Ranking websites that pay for advertising higher in search results.
Personalizing search results based on a user's search history and other personal information.
Showing sponsored results at the top of search results pages. Sponsored results are paid for by advertisers, and they are often designed to look like organic search results.

In 2019, the European Union fined Google 4.34 billion Euros for manipulating search results in favour of its own shopping comparison service. This was the largest antitrust fine ever imposed in the European Union.
In a recent blog post Dr. Epstein has shared his latest research, shedding light on Google’s ability to shape public opinion and influence elections to align with its liberal corporate worldview.

Generative AI - a subset of AI

Today’s #generativeAI tools like #ChatGPT have created excitement throughout the industry over new possibilities, but the compute required for its models have put a spotlight on performance, cost, and energy efficiency as top concerns for enterprises today.

As generative AI models get bigger, power efficiency becomes a critical factor in driving productivity with a wide range of complex AI workload functions from data pre-processing to training and inference. Developers need a build-once-and-deploy-everywhere approach with flexible, open, energy efficient and more sustainable solutions that allow all forms of AI, including generative AI, to reach their full potential.

It is unlikely that generative AI will completely obsolete present computing devices. While generative AI has made significant advances in recent years, it still relies on computing devices to operate.

Indian cos are wary of deploying ChatGPT-based bots

Recently, Jio Platforms-owned conversational artificial intelligence startup, Haptik, announced that it will integrate the underlying language model behind ChatGPT, the natural language text-generating AI tool made by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, into its services.

It, however, is not the only one. Ever since the launch of the tool for public usage and deployment last November, multiple platforms that build chatbots have begun integrating its underlying algorithm into their own products, including unicorn Gupshup.

As CIOs and tech leaders gauge the risks and rewards of models like ChatGPT, they first need to address critical friction points. At the same time, there are organisations that remain cautious in adopting the technology due to several reasons. Experts feel that AI is still in early stages of development, and the fact that it can still generate incoherent and insensitive answers is a drawback, as is the fact that the platform itself needs to be localized for Indian languages and use cases.

Experts say, technology is the easy aspect, but the governance models are very critical for emerging technologies, like generative AI, ChatGPT and others, to work effectively within an organization and come to the right outcomes.

  • Adoption of Metaverse increases

    Adoption of Metaverse increases

The metaverse is a fast-growing trend with a considerate penetration rate of users for various applications such as gaming, content creation, social interaction, learning & training, and online virtual shopping.

Major factors expected to drive the revenue growth include a growing focus on integrating digital and physical worlds using the Internet, increasing momentum and popularity of Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality.

Today, several e-commerce players are adopting digital world services to showcase the products in the virtual world to gain real-world experience. There are leading players in the metaverse industry who are investing heavily into these areas. Going forward, 5G will effectively support the Metaverse and make it possible for digital words to function.

The growth is complementing the surge in online video gaming adoption and rising consumers preference for online shopping of retail products. A report says, the global gaming audience for e-sports is projected to reach 646 million by 2023. Such an increase in the gaming audiences has created a massive demand for the services market.

American multinational investment bank Goldman Sachs, calls metaverse a $8 trillion global opportunity by 2025 with India's own Metaverse-non-fungible technology economy—already worth an estimated $50-100 million annually— and is expected to touch $100 billion by 2025.

The report said that globally brands are already spending 2-5% of their digital budgets on NFTs (the most successful element of metaverse till date), and that could touch 30-40% in the next five years.

Notably, companies, especially those in non-tech sectors, are now increasingly investing in the technology for better engagement with customers, brand awareness expansion, and identification of new revenue streams.

  • An effective Video Strategy for Hybrid Culture

An effective Video Strategy for Hybrid Culture

Video is a powerful tool for engaging, unifying, informing, and training a hybrid workforce. At the beginning of the pandemic, video platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams quickly became the norm for remote workplaces. As businesses transition to hybrid, these kinds of video conferencing platforms are still crucial for communications.

But using a full range of video is important too. When you need to communicate business-critical thinking, break down complex topics, or align a team around a consistent message, video content is a proven way to success – particularly if your team is disparate and spread out.

Businesses today leverage a complex network of employees, partners, and vendors operating across multiple locations and time zones. This makes it challenging to connect effectively and safely navigate around communication silos. The term ‘workplace’ is becoming more flexible than ever, and organizations are ushering in a new era of communication engagements to connect and unify employees, generate revenue, and build customer loyalty.

Video technology is gaining prominence now as a preferred communication vehicle, setting new baselines- emerging as an integral part of business functioning rather than a luxury.

Enterprises rely on video to bring employees together, strengthen connections, and build productive teams, from employee onboarding and training to large monthly town halls, recognition ceremonies, wellness festivals, benefits workshops, culture summits, and sales kick-off meetings.

As a testimony, Brightcove's 2022 Video Index Report states that global enterprise video views and the time spent watching them witnessed strong growth as the impact of remote work and broad-scale adoption of video continued. Overall, the number of video views increased by 90% between October 2021 to March 2022, with India seeing a whopping 174% increase in views.

    Worldwide PC shipments fall

Most of the other major PC makers experienced business decline, with most in double digit territory. Whereas, Gartner says that, the worldwide PC shipments were down 19.6%, again with comparable losses for competitors, but with another big discrepancy in the Apple number with Gartner finding it falling 15.6% year over year.

As per Canalys, adverse macroeconomic and industry factors including high inflation, rising interest rates and bloated channel inventories have dented the PC market’s momentum, and are likely to persist into 2023. Notebook shipments suffered the most, posting a year-on-year decline of 19% with 54.7 million units shipped. Desktop shipments proved more robust due to less reliance on consumer spending, falling 11% year-on-year for a total of 14.7 million units.

Lenovo maintained pole position in the global PC market but suffered a 16% year-on-year drop to 16.9 million units. For the second quarter in a row, HP underwent the largest decline out of the top five vendors as it posted 12.7 million units, a 28% year-on-year fall.

Both Lenovo and HP shipped their lowest totals since the onset of the pandemic in Q1 2020. Third-placed Dell also posted a significant decline of 21% in shipments, posting just under 12 million units.

Apple enjoyed a better quarter than its competitors as it fulfilled orders from Q2 delayed due to supply disruptions in China and launched new M2 Macbooks. It sealed fourth place with 8.0 million units, a modest year-on-year increase of 2%. Asus rounded out the top five with 5.5 million units, an annual decrease of 8%.

PC sales posted their fastest growth in 20 years during the first quarter of 2021 as consumers and businesses bought new laptops and desktops for remote work and learning. In 2021, PC sales grew about 15%, returning to 2012 levels after nearly a decade of slow or no growth.

Attackers impersonating Zoom to steal Microsoft user credentials

Ten thousand users working in a major online brokerage company in North America were targeted by malicious hackers who used social engineering and brand impersonation techniques to gain the users’ trust and urged them to act swiftly. This gave users little time to think about the email and fall victim to the attack.

Users were redirected to a spoofed Outlook login page after clicking on the link. This login page asked for the users’ credentials, thereby luring them into entering their account emails and passwords.

As per the report’s details, users noted that clicking on a ‘Start Meeting’ button is a routine habit for them. Since the email contents followed a very familiar format, their brains did what they were programmed to do and acted quickly.

Phishing emails can be pretty easy to identify because they come with grammatical errors and links that do not lead to the websites they state. Moreover, phishing emails follow a format that resembles the original senders. Most times, simply hovering your computer mouse over a listed link can prevent you from a cyberattack.

Aimed at more than 21,000 users at a national healthcare company, the phishing email included a subject line of “For [name of recipient] on Today, 2022” with each user’s actual name listed as the recipient.

Displaying the #Zoom name and logo, the email itself claimed that the person had two messages waiting for their response. To read the alleged messages, the recipient had to click on a main button in the body of the message.

The main button would have taken users to a phony landing page spoofing a Microsoft login site. At the site, the victims were instructed to enter their Microsoft account password supposedly to verify their identity before they could access the messages.

The landing page already populated the username field with the person’s actual email address to further lull them into a sense of security. Naturally, any Microsoft pa

India a guiding star in 5G

A top UK-based grouping of global mobile carriers has expressed enthusiasm over the emerging business opportunity around #5Gservices in India. India's market has changed much in the last five years. There are certainly some stakeholders and investors (that are) looking to participate, who do have confidence that this is a great place for the future of 5G.

The fact is while the rest of the world moves towards 5G, a lot of countries would start to look at India as a guiding star in 5G, contrary to the traditional domination by the US and China.

In India's first-ever 5G spectrum sale, the government sold 71% of the total 72,098 GHz of airwaves put to auction for Rs 1,50,173 crore. Jio spent a whopping Rs 88,078 crore on 5G airwaves, while Airtel and VI bought 5 G spectrum worth Rs 43,084 crore and Rs 18,799 crore, respectively.

Going forward, #Jio and #Airtel will launch 5G services next month, while Vi is yet to set a firm timeline as it's yet to raise fresh loans and conclude 5G network gear procurement contracts. Airtel, which has opted for the NSA mode, is targeting a pan-India 5G rollout by March 2024. Jio has chosen the SA mode for its countrywide 5G rollout.

From Cell Phones to Siri – Can Be Traced Back to ISI

Establishing the internet’s inner workings with Request for Comments; creating the “phonebook” of the internet with the Domain Naming System; building out the system of “dots” to divide the internet into .com, .edu, .org, and more; developing the rules of the road with internet protocols – are just some of the dizzying array of internet developments made at ISI that are still used today.

Like Laptops - A portable computing device that connects to a network. The terminal developed at ISI was so innovative and handy, that it was used by the director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency– the agency shepherding the burgeoning ARPAnet (forerunner of the internet).

In Smartphones - Tom Ellis, one of the founders of ISI, led a team in the development of the first packet radio terminal which would, in fact, be a precursor of the smartphone.

In Zoom, Skype, Webcasts and More - A notable participant was Robert “Bob” Parker who, soon after this ground breaking teleconference, came to ISI where he spent over 25 years. This technology, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), is fundamental to webcasts, conference calls, Skype, Zoom and more.

In Online Videos - Packet video was first transmitted by a satellite on ISI’s roof in Marina del Rey, California. ISI researcher Stephen Casner went on to standardize the protocols for carrying audio and video on the internet – protocols that are still used today to provide us with online videos of, among other things, cats playing the piano.

In Alexa, Siri, Chatbots and More - In order to ask Alexa for the daily weather forecast, Alexa must be able to understand your words – this is natural language processing in action. A huge step in NLP research was taken in 1988, when ISI artificial intelligence researcher William Mann invented Rhetorical Structure Theory, the theory that explains what makes written texts coherent. His work became the basis for a large body of NLP research, which ev

  • Every Technology is under Attack

    Every Technology is under Attack

Remote work becomes the soft target for hackers. For many businesses, hybrid and remote working has become the norm in recent years and organisations have shifted towards cloud-based applications and services to enable this. Malicious actors are intensifying attacks on critical cloud infrastructure with new, sophisticated approaches.

But while this shift has been effective for productivity and improving employee happiness, hybrid working also comes with additional #cybersecurity risks that organisations might not be thinking about -- and that's making life easier for cyber criminals.

Cloud migration takes such threats to the next level because sometimes it is not a well-thought move. However, when it comes to individual targets, phishing attacks continue to emerge with much more sophistication and advancement. Nowadays, simple tricks used earlier in phishing are replaced with highly customized, genuine-looking targeted attacks.

Phishing Gets More Sophisticated — Phishing attacks, in which carefully targeted digital messages are transmitted to fool people into clicking on a link that can then install malware or expose sensitive data, are becoming more sophisticated.

The biggest, most damaging and most widespread threat facing small businesses are phishing attacks. Phishing accounts for 90% of all breaches that organizations face, they've grown 65% over the last year, and they account for over $12 billion in business losses.

Sometimes, even the professionals working in security/law enforcement, etc. get duped by such attacks. Population scale percolation of UPI and innocence of users lead to unfortunate events of siphoning out their hard-earned money. On the other hand, for business houses, small or large, the primary threat of #ransomware continues to emerge further along with data theft.

When COVID-19 hit suddenly and unexpectedly, systems resilience, agility, adaptability, and scalability were the fundamental capabilities needed by governments, businesses, and other organizations to navigate the crisis.

Certain segments needed to scale immediately to meet explosions in demand, like telemedicine, videoconferencing, and eCommerce, while others struggled to right-size their businesses faced with near-overnight elimination of demand, like live events & entertainment, travel, and ridesharing. As the pandemic is getting over, a new technology is getting ready to replace much hyped cloud since the adoption of cloud is an expensive affair.

The advancement in technology and the evolving global economy saw enterprises looking to improve their business efficiency, elasticity, and innovation.

During these 30 months of journey, we have witnessed the growth of all cloud platforms such as #AWS, Azure, #Google, Zoom and others are continuing to invest aggressively in capacity and innovation as they jockey for market share and work to accelerate their clients’ digital transformations. While most cloud platforms will likely see revenues grow, there is a race to land large enterprise IT and data estates due to the long-term challenges and costs associated with migration.

According to an IDC report, the cloud-as-a-service market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 159.7 percent (2019-2024), reaching up to $24.6 billion by 2024. Now the cloud owned companies are suggesting the enterprises to go for deploying more multi-cloud arrangements, with this the IT budgets are increasingly going to cloud giants.

According to a recent survey from Flexera on IT budgets for 2021, money is flowing toward Microsoft Azure and its

Chinese e-commerce giant has started operations in India through Shopee

In the year 2020, The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology invoked issued directions for blocking the mobile applications under section 69A of IT Act 2000. There are various mobile applications which are being funded and are operating under the influence of Chinese entities and continue to operate in India through the smokescreen afforded by a global maze of equity holdings and complex corporate structures. Such is the set-up of SPPIN which has been created to penetrate into the India e-commerce markets and is utilising the Chinese investments through multiple and complex corporate structuring. SPPIN is incorporated in India to operate globally established e-commerce platform, Shoppe. The e-commerce brand Shoppe is owned and operated worldwide by SEA Limited, an entity incorporated within the jurisdiction of Cayman Islands with offices in Singapore. The founder is Forrest Xiaodong Li, a Chinese born, recently turned Singaporean citizen. SEA Limited is backed by Tencent, which owns approx 43% of class B shares.

As such no key business decision in SEA Limited can be taken without the approval of Tencent. Recently, Tencent Cloud Computing (Beijing) company limited is disclosed as a related party to SEA Limited in its annual reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission, United States. Further, the disclosure also states that SEA Limited uses Tencent Cloud to store their data. At the same time, the privacy policy states that, Your Personal data and /or information may be transferred to, stored or processed outside of India. In most cases, your personal Data will be transferred to Singapore to be processed, where its servers are located. It logically states that the data which will be collected from Indian citizens by Shoppe through SPPIN will be stored and processed on Tencent Cloud. It shows how smartly the Chinese tech majors may have manipulated documents to meet the regulatory compliances.

    Collaboration Platforms posing risks

There has been a widespread adoption of collaboration platforms across industries to improve and personalize Customer Experience. Organizations are using these platforms in innovative ways to improve, personalize and hence deliver better Customer experience to a variety of customers across rural and urban areas. This has helped companies establish a better connection with a larger customer base and gives customers the flexibility to connect from anywhere, anytime and across any device/platform. Beyond connecting with customers, companies are also using collaboration platforms in a variety of ways to enable new ways of working, learning, service delivery, hosting events and empowering a hybrid workforce. In the post-pandemic world, collaboration and conferencing tools like Microsoft Teams, Slack, Zoom, etc. have replaced desk chatter, watercooler conversations and even email. As we approach the end of 2021, organizations across the globe have understood the importance of the hybrid work space and are preparing their teams for this new normal. As a semblance of normalcy resumed during the latter half of the year, we saw organizations adopt a mix of remote, hybrid and physical setups in different mixes as were best suited to their objectives.

Virtual Care and Telehealth are here to stay and the past couple of years have really highlighted the importance of virtual healthcare. Telehealth and video communications have made value-based care more accessible, convenient, and affordable. Various innovations and improvements have improved patient experience to a great extent. Providers today can consult with global experts and continue their medical education with virtual training, certification programs, and conferences. Most of the workers are on home networks, potentially using personal devices, or interacting — unwittingly or not — through unauthorized communica

India is going to get recognised as running the world’s data centers

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed Indian businesses, both big and small, to use digital platforms and cloud computing to reduce operational expenditure. There has been a shift in the way technology has been built out even in India. There are various initiatives from the Government like Digital India is also driving increased use of data services. Cloud is the biggest enabler of data in today’s world. The upcoming launch of 5G, and Internet of Things use cases, are also driving growth. While the data center industry is currently restricted to big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai, it is likely to percolate down to tier-2 and tier-3 cities as data consumption increases. This will also lead to the growth of edge data centers. There are several cases, we see that businesses who have managed to really thrive in the context of the cloud are doing better than others. India is basically running the world’s data centers regardless of where they are. The big tech firms are collaborating with telcos to expand their cloud services presence. Setting up data centers is vital for big technology firms because of the administration's data localization norms. This is one of the biggest reasons for the surge in the number of data centers.

Mumbai, which accounts for 45% of the total capacity, is expected to further add 267 MW between now and 2023, as per the survey of JLL. Demand was expanding due to increasing digital usage emerging from distributed workforce, growing data security concerns and business disruptions. Banking and financial services are adopting hybrid options to meet digital growth. Home-grown video and gaming platforms in midst of robust user growth are also fuelling the data center industry demand. There are various investment commitments to the tune of $3 billion highlighting the growth potential, with the data center industry expected to double its capacity and cross the 1GW mark by 2023. Data-centre operators are adopting large lan

    Security hiring boom to continue

To adapt to hybrid working environments, more companies will drive to adopt the Zero Trust security model. Conversations around protecting the hybrid workforce from risk will lead security professionals to adopt modern tools and technologies, like multi-factor authentication and the Zero Trust approach to security. Hence, companies need these tools to make sure their employees can get work done as safely as possible from wherever they are -- commuting, traveling, or working from home -- and that all of their endpoints are secured with continual checks in place. Going forward, the security leaders will step up their protections against third-party risks. In security, you always need to be thinking ahead about what might come down the pipeline. From SolarWinds in December 2020, to Colonial Pipeline and Kaseya in 2021, our industry saw a distinct increase in supply chain attacks. CISOs and CSOs will need to make sure their vendors are also secure. This includes looking at third parties related to the business and assessing how to best manage any risks.

Secondly, more public technology companies will create dedicated cybersecurity committees on their boards of directors. One of the most impactful things that was done at Zoom this past year was to institute a three-person committee on its board dedicated to cybersecurity matters. Having security industry experience at this level is incredibly valuable, readily addressing concerns and issues in industry shorthand. While this approach is still relatively new, it has been incredibly beneficial and zoom wished it did it sooner. It was heard from peers expressing strong interest in recreating this approach at their own companies, which lead to expect this will be a priority for organizations in the new year. Finally, the security hiring boom will continue. We know that cybersecurity professionals are a hot c

    Healthcare organization-attractive targets to cybercrime

Organizations in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry can use the knowledge of their threat landscape — and the most relevant vulnerabilities — to take specific steps to improve their defenses against particular types of threats that are most likely to affect them. Organizations in any industry must strike a balance between security on one hand and usability on the other. The varying business and operational needs of organizations in different industries are major factors where and how they strike that balance. Healthcare providers that face life-or-death situations with their patients may have lower tolerance for interruptions, downtime, or inconveniences that could slow their ability to respond to urgent or time-sensitive clinical needs. The cost of such an emphasis on expediency is that it can leave organizations with more vulnerable attack surfaces. Combined with the high value of certain types of healthcare data, these vulnerabilities make these organizations more attractive targets to threat actors. Criminals are aware of these breach-related costs, and many believe that healthcare organizations are more likely to comply with data disclosure extortion demands out of a desire to avoid these costs. Threats to disclose compromised data, rather than simply encrypting it for ransom, are now a standard component of ransomware attacks.

The healthcare and pharmaceutical industry is heavily regulated in ways that have significant security implications. Compliance with the security standards of healthcare laws and regulations is a necessary but insufficient condition for a robust security posture. While it is both important and beneficial to check those security compliance boxes, a box-checking mentality can become counterproductive if it leads organizations to become complacent in a false sense of security, or to refrain from considering and

    Personalized digital experiences

Customers are increasingly demanding personalized digital experiences, but currently only 28% of decision-makers strongly agree that their organizations can deliver against the content needs of their customers. With more businesses turning to AI to solve their content challenges, automation can help meet the customers’ expectations. The pandemic has triggered a radical shift in work cultures, as professionals have been forced to go for hybrid work. The trend is taking off as employees balance working remotely and safely returning to the office. Customers are in the “third wave” of transformation since the start of the pandemic, which involves a mix of employees that will always be remote and those that are a blend of working in the office and at home. As such, businesses are thinking about how to properly address the new needs of their employees. Meanwhile, many firms in India have been calling employees back to work for at least for a few days a week on a flexible basis amid an in-control Covid case load and rapid vaccination pace.

There is quiet an increase in the hybrid workforce and to complement the efforts, recently the US-based tech firm Cisco unveiled an interoperability feature in its Webex video conferencing platform, which will allow users to access rival Zoom through its interface, building on similar recent partnerships with competitors Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. The collaboration marks increased pairing up in the video conferencing market, where competition has heated up especially in the last 18 months owing to enterprises relying significantly more on digital tools to keep up work remotely due to the pandemic. Last month, search engine Google said in a blog post that it has agreed to support interoperability with Cisco Systems hardware devices, which will allow users to log into a Google meeting on a Cisco devi

Small, Bit-and-Piece Cyber Attacks increased by 233% in 2021

Attackers are approaching with bit-and-piece attacks

Small bit-and-piece DDoS attacks (distributed denial of service) boomed by 233% in the first half of 2021, revealed Nexusguard researchers after gathered data from CSPs, honeypots, botnet scanning and research on traffic moving between attackers and their targets. As the pandemic carried on into 2021, hackers experimented with new attack patterns to avoid signature-based detection. In the first half of 2021, more than 99% of all DDoS attacks were smaller than 10Gbps.These small, nimble attacks can cripple communications service providers and Internet service providers if they leave detection to threshold or signature-based methods alone. Attackers are continuing to diversify their approaches with bit-and-piece attacks to bring down target networks and infrastructures. More than 95% of attacks were smaller than 1Gbps each, and a majority were launched using readily available and inexpensive DDoS-for-hire services. Rather than launching large bandwidth attacks against their targets, researchers noted that perpetrators chose to employ attacks using high packet-rate loads of small-sized traffic from DDoS-for-hire services, with the aim of evading DDoS mitigation detection systems.

The high level of intricacies behind communications service provider networks causes them to generally allow all types of traffic to pass through, which leads to smaller or spoofed types of attacks to strike undetected. Hence, Behavioural detection and mitigation approaches are strongly recommended for targeted networks since they can compare peacetime with battles and take a wider range of factors into consideration than anomalous thresholds or attack signatures. The researchers witnessed several service providers bear the brunt of DDoS attacks, including China Telecom, China Unicom, Vodafone Türkiye, Türk Telekom, Turkcell İletişim Hizmetleri A.S. receiving th
