Virat Kohli relinquished captaincy of the Indian Test side after the conclusion of the three-match Test series against South Africa. The Indian side went down to the Proteas 1-2.
And now, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official has revealed that no name has been discussed as of now to replace Kohli. The BCCI official also added that as of now, Rohit Sharma is the vice-captain of the Indian Test side.
The official further added that there is enough time for the BCCI to decide who will replace Kohli as the next Test captain.
“No name has been discussed to replace Virat Kohli yet. Rohit Sharma is the designated vice-captain of the team. There is enough time to decide who will replace Virat Kohli as Test captain,” said the BCCI official.
The official also added that the BCCI will soon take a call as to who will replace Virat Kohli as the skipper of the Indian Test side. Adding that the Indian selectors are still deliberating on the options, the official concluded by stating that the selection committee will give its final recommendation in due course of time.
“BCCI selectors will take a call on this in due time. Selectors will deliberate all the options. The selection committee will make the final recommendation,” concluded the BCCI official.
Shreyas Iyer was released by the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise ahead of the 2022 IPL mega auctions. The Capitals retained Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Anrich Nortje, and Axar Patel.
And ahead of the 2022 IPL mega auctions, a report in India Today has stated that the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise is interested in roping in Iyer as their new skipper after Virat Kohli stepped down as the RCB captain after IPL 2021.
The report further added that the RCB franchise will bid aggressively for Iyer in the upcoming IPL mega auctions that are slated to be held next month.

In what can be called a shocking announcement, Virat Kohli has stepped down as India’s Test captain. The 33-year-old took to Twitter on Saturday (January 15) and informed about the same. Kohli’s jaw-dropping decision came a day after India’s Test series defeat against South Africa. India, despite having a 1-0 lead, failed to win their maiden Test series in the rainbow nation.
The same earned them a lot of criticism. However, Kohli leaving Test captaincy never seemed on the cards. Kohli, in his statement, thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for giving him the opportunity of leading the nation. He also thanked former coach Ravi Shastri and ex-captain MS Dhoni for supporting him in his journey. Kohli, who stepped down as India’s white-ball captain last year, also said he feels it’s the right time for him to step down as Test captain.
Virat Kohli has by far been the best Indian Test skipper of all time, as the stats show and on Saturday (January 15), he came out with a shocking announcement. The 33-year-old gave up India’s captaincy in the longer format. The decision comes after the 2-1 defeat against South Africa recently and it has to be noted that he has already given up captaincy in T20 internationals after the T20 World cup 2021. Kohli captained India in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them and losing just 17 with a win percentage of 58.82. Having taken over the captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2014, Kohli has been phenomenal in terms of building a strong squad. He also was one of the main reasons behind the development of the fast bowlers in India as he kept backing them in overseas conditions.

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly said that Team India have taken giant strides over the years under the leadership of Virat Kohli. Indian cricket was in deep turmoil when Kohli took over from MS Dhoni in the purest format back in December 2014. The Jharkhand-born Dhoni retired from Test cricket following which the now 33-year-old took charge of the Test team.

Ever since Rohit took over the captaincy for Mumbai in 2013, he has won five IPL titles and is the most successful captain in the history of the tournament so far. Gavaskar also opined that Pant will be able to play a lot more big innings if he is given the responsibility.
