Mild recession in the US, an advantage to India
As per Dan Fineman, co-head of equity strategy-Asia Pacific at Credit Suisse, India has a very robust economic cycle and a good structural outlook in an environment where developed markets are heading into a slowdown. A slowdown of the magnitude that we're expecting for the US actually could be pretty good for Asia.
The positive returns for India given upbeat growth in earnings adding that the main risk to the Indian growth story would be if the US recession is deeper than anticipated.
“As per the report, we can probably expect positive returns for India ... as it has good earnings growth, there isn't a strong argument for the market to be derating,” he said. “If the recession in the US is deeper than we’re anticipating, then that would be quite negative for global equities and emerging markets.”
On China, Fineman mentioned that it is still among the best choices for equity markets given cheaper valuations. “Even after the great rally they’ve had in November, the multiples are still at a deep discount relative to the rest of the region and global equities,” he said.
As per J P Morgan, the resultant slowing in aggregate demand could see the U.S. economy shed over one million jobs by mid-2024, which could then see the Fed start easing rates by 50bps per quarter starting in the second quarter of 2024.
Financial conditions are likely to tighten further, consumers are experiencing a significant negative sentiment shock, energy and food supply disruptions have worsened and the outlook for foreign growth has deteriorated. All these factors will likely contribute to the expected downturn.

The report reveals that reshoring—when the production of goods is returned to the company’s original country—gig economy regulation, and flexible working will become the new norm. Companies are homeward bound as offshore manufacturing is too costly. Reshoring is an increasingly attractive option. Offshoring is losing its cost advantage due to significant supply chain disruptions and rising labour costs in countries such as China. Companies are also being pressured to localize production to reduce their carbon footprints and support the post-pandemic rebuilding of their home country’s economy. Reshoring will destroy more jobs in developing countries than it will create in developed countries. It also won’t make up for all the jobs initially lost through offshoring because today’s production line is less labour intensive, but it will still make a welcome difference as developed economies shake off the pandemic.
The growth of the gig economy that we saw in 2021 will continue into 2022. However, this growth comes with increasing instability. The gig economy model is precarious and unsustainable due to landmark regulatory changes across Europe, classifying more and more gig workers as employees rather than independent contractors. Governments will continue to legislate in favor of gig workers, and this will heavily increase costs for companies that now need to afford sick days, holidays, and pensions. According to GlobalData surveys, 42% of workers are still working from home full time, but most offices will return to at least 50% capacity by May 2022. There are three segments that have shown positive growth. First is OTT that has witnessed an incredible 144% increase in the number of transactions. Second is the gaming segment which also saw a phenomenal 100% increase in expenditure and 154% increase in average ticket size between the two years. Finally, edtech saw a huge boost with a 78% increase in the number of transactions and a 44% increase in expenditure, within this period. At the same time, Globally, card-related fraud remains the highest in terms of reported incidents from consumers. However, fraud incidents associated with real-time payments were on the rise from 2019 to 2020 as fraudsters tend to target new channels. Real-time payments scams that were on the rise include confidence tricks (12.5% rising to 13.7 %), Identity theft (6 % rising to 11.6%) and digital wallet account hacks (4.4% rising to 6.2%).

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to retain projection for real GDP growth at 9.5% for 2021-22. “The projection for real GDP growth is retained at 9.5% for 2021-22... Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is projected at 5.7 % during 2021-22 - this consists of 5.9% in Q2, 5.3% in Q3 and 5.8% in Q4 of 2021-22 with risks broadly balanced. CPI inflation for the first quarter of 2022-23 is projected at 5.1%,” said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on August 06.
