Sophisticated Tech To Dupe People
Scammers are using advanced technology to dupe people. This includes using voice morphing software to impersonate real people, such as bank representatives or government officials. They may also use fake phone numbers that appear to be from legitimate organizations. Cyber criminals are using artificial intelligence to make clones of people's voices to pretend to be your friend or family member and scam your money.
"Like Video" scam is a type of phone scam that targets social media users. The scammer will call the victim and claim to be from a social media company, such as Facebook or Instagram. They will then tell the victim that they have won a prize or a contest, but that they need to "like" a certain video in order to claim it.
If you take the call forward and reply to the person, they will tempt you into earning thousands of rupees just by liking a video, which is actually a malicious website that will steal the victim's personal information. The scam then proceeds through multiple steps which means people have earned a couple of hundred bucks for their efforts.

Surge in Ransomware and IoT attacks
There are evolving tactical behavior from digital threat actors as they opt for different types of malicious attacks compared to years past. The IoT #malware (37%) and encrypted threats (22%) also is on the rise, the SonicWall Mid-Year #CyberThreat Report uncovers.
#Cybercriminals are diversifying and expanding their skill sets to attack critical infrastructure, making the threat landscape even more complex and forcing organizations to reconsider their security needs. Despite the decline in global ransomware attempts (-41%), a variety of other attacks have trended up globally, including crypto-jacking (+399%), IoT malware (+37%) and encrypted threats (+22%).
Overall intrusion attempts were up, led by the highest year on record for global crypto-jacking volume recorded by SonicWall, as threat actors shifted away from traditional ransomware attacks in favor of a stealthier means of malicious activities. The data suggests increased law enforcement activity, heavy sanctions and victims’ refusal to pay ransom demands have altered criminal conduct, and threat actors are targeting other means of revenue.

Data protection Bill awaits consent
The Indian government has approved a draft of the Digital Personal #DataProtectionBill, which requires consent before collecting personal data and imposes penalties for data breaches. The bill is expected to be presented in the upcoming session of Parliament. While the contents of the Bill will remain confidential until it is brought in Parliament.
Nearly six years after the Supreme Court held privacy to be a fundamental right, the Centre has made a second attempt at framing legislation for protection of data. The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022, a draft of which was floated in November, is expected to be tabled in Parliament’s Monsoon Session that begins on July 20.
The Bill is crucial because irrespective of our levels of digital literacy or comfort with digital technologies, digitalisation and data will inevitably and increasingly impact vital aspects of our public and private lives. But, the question is, does the draft Bill adequately address the still extant public concerns that led to the unanimous privacy judgment by a nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court almost six years back?

#Scammers are known to adapt and evolve their tactics over time to exploit emerging trends, and the growing popularity of #cryptocurrencies has provided them with new opportunities. OTT stands for “over-the-top,” as in going above and beyond streaming cable networks or YouTube. According to an Eros Now-KPMG report, an OTT viewer in India spends approximately 70 minutes per day on video streaming platforms, with a consumption frequency of 12.5 times a week! Human error is one of the biggest security threats that organisations face. A survey reveals that out of total cybercrime noticed and unnoticed in the country, 80% vulnerabilities are happening with the employees working inside the organisation and 10% of vulnerabilities are due to Unnoticed by the employees.
A total of 90% vulnerabilities are due to employees who expose information directly (for example, by misconfiguring databases) or by making a mistake that enables cyber criminals to access the organisation’s systems. More specifically, human error falls into two categories. The first, skill-based error, occurs when an employee makes a mistake when completing a task they are familiar with.
Human error can occur in several ways when completing this task. From the balance 10% vulnerabilities, 8% vulnerabilities are due to the hardware and software failure, whereas rest 2% #cybersecurity are credited to the hackers and cyber-criminals, where the role of software/hardware companies are coming into the play for securing the enterprises, since cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated. It found that breaches resulting from human error have become comparatively common in the past 2 years, with phishing scams posing a particular risk.
Insider threats are particularly pernicious because of the knowledge, access and information malicious insiders may possess, and because even individuals who are cybersecurity-aware can make inadvertent or careless errors.

Startup funding dips by 35%
According to the Tracxn report, the late stage funding for startups also plunged by 45% from $29.3 billion between January and November 2021 to $16.1 billion for the same period in 2022, which has dropped by 79% compared to the peak of Q3 2021. “Although last month has emerged as a ray of hope, it is still too early to assume that the bottom is behind us. We need to wait one or two quarters to see if the momentum continues,” said the expert from Tracxn.
The report shows the funding in Q3 2022 declined 58% in comparison to Q2 2022 and fell by 79% compared to the peak of Q3 2021. Tracxn said that in past one year the top funding rounds cleared by firms include -- BYJU'S ($965 million, Series F), VerSe ($805 million, Series J), Swiggy ($700 million, Series J), Tata Passenger ($496 million, Series D) and Polygon ($450 million, Series E).
At the same time, there were reports that Big Tech hirings in India is down by 95% from usual volume. The report says, FAANMG hiring in India is declining 95% from peak. Global tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Netflix are down by nearly 95% compared to typical active hiring volume in India - specialist staffing firm Xpheno said. There are active job postings of less than 2,000 jobs at present, the agency added. The active openings fell from 9,000 in July-August to 4,000 in mid-October.
Job postings by these firms decreased by 70% in the last quarter itself, and further by 95% compared to peak active job postings. The current hiring action is nearly a total pause amidst the macro-economic developments. Experts say that the next US Federal Reserve rate hike will amplify the recession.
Startups now call it ‘the funding winter’. The tech sector, a major beneficiary of this cheap liquidity during pandemic is the worst hit as money flow was reduced.
