कथक सम्राट नर्तक पंडित बिरजू महाराज का हृदयाघात से निधन हो गया। पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित 83 वर्षीय बिरजू महाराज ने रविवार-सोमवार की दरमियानी रात दिल्ली में अंतिम सांस ली। बिरजू महाराज के निधन की खबर से संगीत प्रेमियों में शोक की लहर छा गई।
बताया जा रहा है कि बिरजू महाराज कल देर रात अपने पोते के साथ खेल रहे थे तभी उनकी तबीयत खराब हो गई और वे अचेत हो गए। उन्हें तुरंत साकेत के अस्पताल में ले जाया गया जहां डॉक्टरों ने उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया। उनके परिजनों ने बताया कि कुछ दिन पहले ही महाराज को गुर्दे की बीमारी का पता चला था। उनका इलाज चल रहा था। गायक मालिनी अवस्थी और अदनान सामी समेत कला, फिल्म व संगीत जगत की तमाम हस्तियों ने उन्हें श्रद्धांजलि दी है।बिरजू महाराज कथक के पर्याय थे। वह लखनऊ के कालका बिंदादीन घराने के सदस्य थे। बिरजू महाराज का पूरा नाम बृज मोहन नाथ मिश्र था। उनका जन्म 4 फरवरी 1937 को लखनऊ के प्रसिद्ध कथक नर्तक परिवार में हुआ था। लखनऊ घराने से ताल्लुक रखने वाले बिरजू महाराज कथक नर्तक होने के साथ-साथ शास्त्रीय गायक भी थे। बिरजू महाराज के पिता और गुरु अच्छन महाराज, चाचा शंभु महाराज और लच्छू महाराज भी प्रसिद्ध कथक नर्तक थे।बिरजू महाराज का एक माह से इलाज चल चल रहा था। वह बीती रात करीब 12.15 से 12: 30 बजे के बीच अचानक अचेत हो गए। हम उन्हें तुरंत अस्पताल ले गए, लेकिन उन्हें बचाया नहीं जा सका। रागिनी महाराज ने बताया कि उन्हें गैजेट्स से भी काफी लगाव था। वे उन्हें तुरंत खरीदना चाहते थे। वे कहा करते थे कि वे नर्तक नहीं बनते तो मैकेनिक बनते। उनका सदैव मुस्कुराता चेहरा हमेशा मेरी आंखों के सामने रहेगा।
पंडित बिरजू महाराज को 1983 में पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित किया गया था। उन्हें संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्कार और कालिदास सम्मान भी मिले थे। बनारस हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय और खैरागढ़ विश्वविद्यालय ने बिरजू महाराज को डॉक्टरेट की मानद उपाधि भी दी थी
