The Day 1 of the IPL 2022 mega auction was full of twists and turns. While a few teams including the two new entrants Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans made some big purchases and made the most of their opportunities, the multiple-time winners Mumbai Indians, and the Chennai Super Kings were cautious in their approach and played the waiting game to strike at the right moment. It would be interesting to see whether the two champion teams would make some smart buys on the Day 2 of the event on Sunday.
Even though MI and CSK made some calculated moves, they along with some of the other teams were successful in bringing players on board by breaking the bank. Their rivals Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore also did not hesitate in shelling out some extra bucks to buy a few key players for the 15th edition of the marquee tournament. Without further ado, here’s a look at the players who laughed their way to the bank on Day 1 of the mega auction.

4. Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Nicholas Pooran, Shardul Thakur (INR 10.75 crore)
As many as four players turned out to be the fifth most expensive player of the opening day of the mega auction. RCB shelled out INR 10.75 crore each for both Wanindu Hasaranga and Harshal Patel winning a fierce bidding war. Hasaranga came up with a reputation of being a brilliant leg-spinner and played for RCB only last season while Harshal Patel also turned up for the same franchise winning the purple cap as well.
Nicholas Pooran was the other player to stun many with the amount he earned. SRH beat the four-time champions CSK and two-time champions KKR in the bidding war to secure the West Indian swashbuckler’s services. While many felt he was overpricedBy CricTracker| 91 views
IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Fast bowlers take the limelight on Day 1 as franchises spent heavy for pacers
Upcoming sensation Avesh Khan created a bidding war among the franchises in the ongoing IPL 2022 mega auction and he has gone for 50 times more than his base price of 20 lakh. The Madhya Pradesh lad was picked up by the Lucknow Super Giants for a whopping INR 10 Crores after intense bidding among the franchises of CSK, MI, DC, SRH, and LSG. He will now be joining the likes of KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Quinton de Kock, Manish Pandey, Jason Holder, Deepak Hooda, and Krunal Pandya in the Lucknow Super Giants side.
Avesh Khan had a brilliant IPL season in 2021 which earned him a recent call up to the Indian side and he has been bowling brilliantly in recent times. Over the years, he has been in and out of the side for Delhi Capitals and hasn’t been able to establish his potential with the ball on a longer run. However, he had a breakout season in the last IPL and was expected to be retained by the Delhi Capitals.
Mohammed Shami has been one of the successful bowlers in IPL history having registered 79 scalps from 77 matches ever since he had the first burst in the scene at the marquee tournament in the 2011 edition. Heading into next week’s IPL 2022 mega auction, Shami has already represented three teams- the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (2011-2013), the now-defunct Delhi Daredevils from 2014 to 2018 before serving the Punjab Kings for three seasons between 2019 to 2021.
Just months ahead of the IPL 2022 auction, the 2014 finalists had decided to retain only two players from the previous season including explosive opener Mayank Agarwal and emerging left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh. The franchise decided to part ways with the rest of the players including Shami which means that the Indian team’s senior fast bowler will need to go under the hammer during the two-day event in Bengaluru next week.
