India’s retail inflation at all time high of 7.79% in April
The retail inflation number in April remained high due to the low base effect, worsened by price jumps across all major commodity groups. The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation, which the RBI takes as a reference point while deciding on the monetary policy, in April 2022 soared to an eight-year high of 7.79 per cent. It is as compared with 4.23 per cent in April 2021 and 6.97 per cent in March 2022. Core inflation, which excludes changes in food and oil prices, in April also touched a 95-month high at 6.97 per cent. It has remained over 5 per cent for 24 consecutive months. Inflation in the food basket rose to 8.38 per cent in April, from 7.68 per cent in the preceding month and 1.96 per cent in the year-ago month. High price levels of fuel and food items, especially of vegetables, spices and oils/fats, along with household services, contributed to the sharp rise in inflation, a level which is seen as being partly responsible for preempting the unscheduled repo rate hike of 40 basis points by the RBI last week. Among states, the highest inflation rate was recorded by West Bengal, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. Core inflation — the non-food, non-fuel component of inflation — in April also touched a 95-month high of 6.97 per cent, remaining more than 5 per cent for 24 consecutive months.
Experts say, the base effect may moderate inflation levels in May but it is still expected to remain above 6.5 per cent, raising expectations of a back-to-back rate hike in the June monetary policy meeting of the RBI. Inflation is being seen as posing the “biggest threat” to the economy and the RBI is looking at reversing all measures — liquidity infused and policy rate cuts — taken during the pandemic over the next 1-2 years along with measures to kill demand. The household debt as a percentage of gross domestic product may have declined to 34% in the first quarter of 2021-22 with the commensurate rise in GDP in the first quarter, though it has increased in absolute terms, the household debt has increased to Rs 75 lakh crore in the first quarter of FY22 from Rs 73.59 lakh crore in FY21, a report of State Bank of India's Research says. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a spike in household debt to the GDP rate. As per the report, it rose sharply to 37.3 percent in 2020-21 from 32.5 percent in 2019-20.
The good thing is that in rural India, the share of outstanding cash debt from non-institutional credit agencies has declined significantly to 34% in 2018 from 44%in 2012. Notably, almost all states have registered a steep decline in non-institutional credit in rural areas, indicating the increase in formalisation of the economy. The share of non-institutional credit has declined significantly in the case of Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat. In Haryana and Rajasthan, which witnessed loan waiver schemes, the share of non-institutional credit declined contrary to popular perception, it said. This could be explained by a significant increase in penetration of KCC (Kisan Credit Cards) in these two states. The number of KCC cards has jumped by 5 times over the 7 year period ended 2020. The report believes that the recent reforms in agriculture could further help in the formalisation of the economy, despite the political cacophony.

The Government has ordered to nullify the retrospective tax clauses that were introduced in 2012 to bring past indirect transfer of Indian assets under the ambit of taxation. Experts say, it’s the right call India government has taken in drawing the curtains on the retrospective tax. The country needs to strengthen the confidence of investors, not dangle the sword of uncertainty over them. The amendment for retrospective taxation yielded no revenues, only brought about disrepute to the government. The government proposes to refund the principal amount in full to the litigants, but the companies will need to withdraw the cases and furnish undertakings that they won't claim cost damages or interest. It recognises the importance of certainty in tax laws which is a key factor in ensuring confidence in India as an attractive investment destination and expressed strong ambition for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The retrospective applicability of this provision met with sharp criticism. On 5th August, the ghost of this retrospective tax has been finally laid to rest. The government has introduced The Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 to undo this insidious provision from the Finance Bill, 2012. This will potentially help resolve 17 cases in which income tax demand had been raised. In two high profile cases—Cairn and Vodafone—the corporate entities had already won various legal and arbitration awards. The order says, the government will not raise tax demands in any such case if the transaction occurred before 28 May 2012. Any demand already raised will be withdrawn and any taxes collected will be paid back for the principal amount. In the cases where litigation is pending, this will be done after the impacted corporate party gives an undertaking not to contest the case further. This is a welcome move and also a practical implementation plan.

സ്പെക്ട്രം യൂസർ ചാർജ്, ലൈസൻസ് ഫീസിനത്തിൽ രാജ്യത്തെ വിവിധ ടെലികോം കമ്പനികളിൽ നിന്നായി 92,642 കോടി രൂപ ഈടാക്കാനുള്ള ടെലികോം വകുപ്പിന്റെ തീരുമാനം സുപ്രീം കോടതി ശരിവച്ചു. പലിശയും പിഴയും ചേർത്ത് ഏകദേശം 1.34 ലക്ഷം കോടി രൂപ ടെലികോം കമ്പനികൾ നൽകേണ്ടിവരുമെന്ന് സർക്കാർ വൃത്തങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞു. ഭാരതി എയർടെൽ 42,000 കോടിയും വോഡഫോൺ– ഐഡിയ 40,000 കോടിയും നൽകേണ്ടിവരുമെന്നാണ് പ്രാഥമിക കണക്ക്. ബിഎസ്എൻഎൽ, എംടിഎൻഎൽ, ടാറ്റ ടെലി സർവീസസ്, ജിയോ തുടങ്ങിയവയും പട്ടികയിലുണ്ട്. താരതമ്യേന പുതുമുഖമായ ജിയൊ 14 കോടി മാത്രം നൽകിയാൽ മതിയാവുമെന്നാണ് സൂചന. പണം നൽകേണ്ടതിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗം കമ്പനികളും നിലവിൽ ടെലികോം രംഗത്തില്ല

പ്രീപെയ്ഡ് മൊബൈല് റീച്ചാര്ജുകളുടെ എണ്ണത്തില് വന് ഇടിവ് സംഭവിച്ചതായി റിപ്പോര്ട്ട്.ഓണ്ലൈന് ഡിജിറ്റല് റീചാര്ജിങ് വര്ധിച്ചതേടെയാണ് മൊബൈല് ഫോണുകളുടെ റീടെയില് റീചാര്ജിങില് വന് ഇടിവ് ഉണ്ടായത്. പ്രീപെയ്ഡ് റീചാര്ജിങ്ങില് കഴിഞ്ഞ മാസം 5 മുതല് 10 ശതമാനം വരെ കുറവാണ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. എന്നാല് ഈ മാസം 20 മുതല് 25 ശതമാനം വരെ ഈ മേഖലയില് നിന്നുളള വരുമാനത്തില് ഇടിവുണ്ടായി. നോട്ടു നിരോധനത്തിന് ശേഷം പ്രീപെയ്!ഡ് മൊബൈല് റീചാര്ജ് രംഗത്ത് ദിനംപ്രതി വരുമാന നഷ്ടം നേരിടുകയാണെന്ന് ഈ മേഖലയില് പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്നവര് പറയുന്നു.

രാജ്യത്തെ സ്വകാര്യ ടെലികോം വരിക്കാരുടെ മൊത്തം എണ്ണം 95.38 കോടിയിലെത്തി. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒക്ടോബര് വരെയുള്ള കണക്കാണിത്. രാജ്യത്തെ ടെലികോം, ഇന്റര്നെറ്റ്, സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യ മേഖലയില് പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന സംഘടനയായ സെല്ലുലാര് ഓപ്പറേറ്റേഴ്സ് അസോസിയേഷന് ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ (സി.ഒ.എ.ഐ) ആണ് ഇത് സംബന്ധിച്ച കണക്കുകള് പുറത്തുവിട്ടത്. റിലയന്സ് ജിയോ, മഹാനഗര് ടെലിഫോണ് നിഗം ലിമിറ്റഡ് (എം ടി എന് എല്) എന്നിവയുടെ വരിക്കാര് ഉള്പ്പെടെയാണ് ഈ കണക്ക്. 29.90 ശതമാനം വിപണി വിഹിതത്തോടെ 'ഭാരതി എയര്ടെല്ലാണ് രാജ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ടെലികോം സേവനദാതാവ്. ഒക്ടോബര് മാസം മാത്രം അധികമായി 3.15 ദശലക്ഷം വരിക്കാരെയാണ് എയര്ടെല്ലിന് ലഭിച്ചത്.
